About the property

Mid-Century Lodge - bright, open-concept w/ 7 beds, 4 baths, 14 acres in ITHACA

Shangri-Lodge: A Zen, Mid-Century Retreat On 14 Acres

Whether it’s wine, waterfalls, or unwinding that brings you to the Finger Lakes, Shangri-Lodge will help you have a trip to remember.

We remodeled this 6-bedroom, 4-bath mid-century style home in 2013 and 2014, living in the house while we worked. We loved it so much, we were reluctant to move when we finished. But we wanted to share this special place with guests even more!

Shangri-Lodge sits on 14+ pastoral acres less than 10 minutes by car from downtown Ithaca, quaint Trumansburg, and the Cayuga and Seneca Wine Trails. Summer evenings are wonderful at Shangri-Lodge, with a fire crackling in the fire pit and the kids chasing lightning bugs under a big, star-filled sky. The year-round outdoor hot tub for 6 near the burbling creek provides another wonderful spot to relax.

LIVING & DINING

An open floor-plan, many windows and skylights overlooking the property, and a great room under beamed ceilings make Shangri-Lodge feel expansive, but we arrange the furnishings into conversation areas to keep it intimate. Grab a plush blanket from the cabinet and settle in on the sofas and chairs in front of the wood burning fireplace and flat-screen.

Near the dining room, a second conversation area features four chairs gathered around a plush ottoman, so you can put your feet up together and plan your adventures. The dining table, illuminated by statement lighting, seats 12 before a lovely view of the grounds.

Our dream kitchen lives at Shangri-Lodge. Bring your favorite recipe (or try one of ours) and let the kitchen be your canvas: it has a 4-burner gas stove with griddle, a professional double fridge/freezer, quartz countertops, and cabinets fully stocked for chefs with all utensils and small appliances.

A huge, 19 foot custom island takes center stage in the kitchen. With its four barstools, it’s the place to gather for morning coffee and, in the evening, uncorking your haul from the wineries. (Don’t worry, the whisper-quiet Bosch SilencePlus dishwasher won’t interrupt your after-dinner conversation.)

On the lower level, find our family room, with an electric fireplace, flat-screen TV, sectional sofa, pool table and a door that leads directly to the hot tub. In wintertime, simply walk out the door and take three steps into the steamy water. A stack of fresh towels waits for you in the cabinet.

BEDROOMS & BATH

Shangri-Lodge sleeps 13 people, all in ultra-comfortable beds. Five of the six bedrooms are on the ground floor, with two king beds and one queen bed on one side of the house and two queens on the other - a great setup for privacy.

One of the queen bedrooms has an en-suite bath with a remodeled walk-in shower. Three more ground-floor bedrooms are situated around a shared bath with a tub/shower combo. A third bath is located near the kitchen, across from the full-size laundry area that guests are welcome to use.

Upstairs, find the large, lofted sixth bedroom, with a queen bed and a separate twin. The convenience of an en-suite bathroom completes this suite. Wood-paneled walls and skylights to create a cozy, cabin feel in this space. There’s even a writing desk in case you get inspired. Or check your email; the whole house has state-of-the-art Wifi hubs.

OUTDOOR AREA

Shangri-Lodge sits on 14 acres of former farmland, the most spacious lot among all our Classic Country Vacation Homes. A road divides our 14-acre property just in front of the house. On the house side, you'll find the creek and the fire pit with Adirondack chairs. Across the road is the creek-fed pond with a floating dock with a diving board. If what you seek is an easy, quiet escape from the city, you'll find it here.

THE LOCATION

Don't let its rural setting fool you: Shangri-Lodge sits in an ideal spot, less than 15 minutes from nearly every can't-miss attraction in the Ithaca area, and just five minutes from downtown Ithaca itself. Head into downtown for a foodie's dream date at one of Ithaca's many farm-to-table restaurants on Restaurant Row.

Or take your group out for brunch at a low-key local's diner. Downtown Trumansburg, a quaint creekside village with restaurants, pubs, a bowling alley, farmer’s market, pizzeria, grocery and liquor stores and local shops, just a 10-minute drive from the Lodge. Start with espresso drinks at Gimme Coffee, then try the eclectic breakfasts (like kimchi pancakes) at Creekside Cafe.

If wine brings you to the Finger Lakes, you're in luck. There are over 50 nearby wineries to taste test your way through, all of them easily accessible. Cayuga Wine Trail, the oldest wine trail in the country, is a 10-minute drive from Shangri-Lodge, and the Seneca Lake and Keuka Wine Trails are a short drive away, too.

At Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, Robert Treman and Watkins Glen State Parks - all within a half hour or less - hiking trails, rushing waterfalls and scenic gorges await. Don’t leave without visiting Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes. Paddle out from the public pier on a kayak, cool down on the swimming beach or hop aboard a wine-tasting boat to sample some of the region’s best wines while enjoying its most stunning views.

Great flow, easy living, light, spaciousness, the outdoors, all of these factors make Shangri-Lodge an amazing house for people to come together and enjoy each other's company.

NOTE: Not suitable for weddings, receptions, parties or gatherings which include outside guests. Property is for the use and enjoyment of registered guests only, unless prior approval from owners is given.

Amazing home on a beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this lovely home for a family getaway in the Finger Lakes area of Upstate New York. The house is conveniently located just minutes from Ithaca so there is easy access to the college areas, grocery store, restaurants, etc. The house itself is pristine and decorated so beautifully! The owners have thought of everything that you might need during your stay and provide it. The property is so beautiful with the pond, vintage barns, fire pit and acres to go for walks! KC and Mitch are attentive owners who make the check in and check out process so easy. They are both so personable and are happy to help you in any way. I look forward to returning and staying at either this gorgeous property or one of their others in the future.

Great property

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 10 and here was plenty of space to gather together yet bedrooms for privacy. This house has everything you could want or need. We did not use the hot tub but it looked great. The fire pit with all the Adirondack chairs was fantastic. While nothing is ever perfect this house comes close. The internet was sluggish and with three of our group needing to do some work while in Ithaca this was problematic but for vacationers who don't need to be as connected it would be fine. I would also note that while two bedrooms have on suite the other two bathrooms get shared by four bedrooms. The one bathroom is a bit out of the way especially for the bedroom off of the living room. These are minor details for sure. Our group all agreed that we will rent this house again for our next trip to Ithaca. Great house, great location for visiting the wineries, cideries and the lovely town of Ithaca. Can't wait to go back.

Could not have been better!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The furniture was so comfy and there were lots of places for our family to gather. The kitchen was well equipped and large enough for many of us to cook together. The hot tub and the fire pit were also well used. Would definitely book again.

Enjoyed our stay with a couple caveats

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The house was well stocked. We really enjoyed the outdoor dining area and the fire pit. The house easily accomadated 3 families and their kids. The house is centrally located to local attractions and the interior was clean at check in.

We were very disappointed to learn during check in that the pond and rope swing were off limits due to various animal infestations. Additionally, there was a significant amount of mouse poop on the front porch. We realize the house is located in a wooded area, however, it was clear that that area hadn't been cleaned recently, rendering the porch swing useless. Additionally, the wireless internet left a lot to be desired. Just a heads up to anyone that needs to address work issues (We headed to town to the local Marriott :) )

Owner's Response: Thank you Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to write a review of your stay and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We are very sorry that the pond was not available for your use due to a small family of muskrats deciding they should move in to it. It did take a week for the muskrats to be captured and removed from the pond and we erred on the side of caution by making swimming off-limits until the pond was declared critter-free. For future customers, we would like you to know that the pond is a natural feature unlike a swimming pool, and at times there can be geese, great blue heron, ducks and other wildlife hanging out there. It is part of living in the country, and many of our city-based customers enjoy the opportunity to see the natural habitat. Also, speaking of nature, the droppings found on the front porch were from a bat that lives way up in the peak of the porch roof, not from mice. These creatures are quite adept at eating insects (less mosquitos, more comfort around the fire pit!). Some nights, if your lucky, you may see some bats swooping around the fields beyond the fire pit eating those tasty treats. The porch is swept off each time we clean the house for the next check-in. If you are looking for a country getaway that is close to city amenities, large lakes and great wineries, Shangri-Lodge might just be what you are looking for. Best, KC & Mitch

Ithaca is an ivy-league college town which has numerous cultural activities and an 'enlightened' population, making it laid-back and progressive at the same time.

Surrounding this small and vibrant city you'll find a strong agricultural countryside spotted by quaint towns and villages. In addition to over a hundred independent wineries, there are artisanal cheese-makers, micro-breweries, spirit distilleries, farmer's markets and organic produce roadside stands.

Popular activities include wine tasting in a region known for award-winning wines and hiking in the area's state and national parks while viewing over 150 magnificent waterfalls. There are local and unique festivals all year-round and excellent restaurants, many of which have a locavour philosophy to bring you the best and freshest ingredients this agricultural region has to offer.
