Some time in the 1830s two old cottages were joined together to create this classic Cape Cod farmhouse. The wide hard pine floors in the kitchen and downstairs bedroom, along with some of the original Sandwich glass in some of the windows let you know how old the place is, and the three staircases betray the fact that it used to be more than one house. It’s a wonderful family summer retreat. From the side you come into the airy living room, and a right turn takes you into a spacious kitchen and dining room combination. The kitchen has everything you need, from up to date gas stove, microwave and dishwasher to generous cooking and baking essentials (yes, that includes a lobster pot). Adjoining the kitchen on one side is a comfortable screened-in porch with a table to eat at and wicker couch and chairs to read in, and on the other side a sheltered brick patio with enclosed outside shower. Also off the main living area is a family room/den with a sectional sofa and cable TV. The internet connection is in that room as well, but the wireless connection is good throughout the house. There are 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. A queen bedroom on the first floor has its own full bath with a tub/shower. On the second floor there are 4 bedrooms. The biggest has two queen size beds, the second a double and a twin, the third a low queen bed tucked under the eaves, and the fourth, in the back of the house overlooking the patio, a twin bed and a full size crib. Between the third and fourth bedrooms is a little study, from which you can reach the kitchen by a back stairway. There is a second full bath with tub/shower on this level, and a third bath with shower off the kitchen. There is baseboard electric heat throughout the ground floor, but not on the second floor. There are a couple of electric radiators that can be used to warm bedrooms as needed. The little nursery bedroom has a wall A/C unit, and there are two other window units that can be deployed as needed. I cannot say enough good things about this home. It is clean, tidy, and tight, but it is also lived in, with signs that real people, including kids, have been visiting and enjoying it for many years. No granite, no stainless, no "nautical theme" decorations from a big box store. This must sound bizarre for what is, in essence, a commercial transaction, but you will leave feeling as if you have stayed at a friend's place. Highlights included watching the moon through the window by the bed every evening, copious children's books to share with my kids, cocktails on the screened porch, cocktails on the patio, watching my kids run around the large yard, the outdoor shower, and the smell of the beach towels off the clothesline. Lots of new options for dining and take out in this little corner of Pond Village, as well. Easy walk to the bay beach, easy bike ride to the ocean beach. We are already planning a trip back.
