Why The Owner chose Kona Coast

Location! Location! Location! Seaside, right in town, walk everywhere. There is no better location on the island of Hawaii! Unique architecture Old Hawaiian-style tropical plantation ambience. We had a fantastic time staying at the popular seaside Kona Islander Condominiums right in town a number of years ago when we visited historic Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can't help but fall in love with the Hawaiian culture and Aloha spirit. We've always thought that someday we would like to own our own piece of paradise. We chose this condo at this complex because there are no condos situated better than this one! We've vacationed in the other Hawaiian islands. Exploring the Big Island of Hawaii and using our comfortable condo in its beautiful setting and very convenient location, we've concluded that it can't be beat. With all the shopping and restaurants nearby there is no need to rent a car if you choose not to. We love it here and so do our children and grandchildren. You will too!

What makes this condo unique

South-facing, our pool-view condo's unique position affords us viewing both sunrise and sunset. Our second floor condo is more private and secure than any ground floor condos. Dappled sunshine filtering through the shade tree off our lanai allows a leisurely breakfast on the lanai without the heat and glare of the tropical sun. Around 10 a.m. the lanai is bathed in sunshine until it's time for lunch around 2 p.m. when the shade returns. The third floor condos generally do not have the benefit of the shade from the trees. We enjoy having a drink at sunset while overlooking the beautiful tiki torch lit pool from our own private second floor lanai. It is especially romantic when the golden moon rises into a star-studded obsidian sky. In the still of the morning, the sunrise is majestic! Colourful tropical birds make for spectacular bird watching from our lanai as we enjoy our breakfast. We are well situated to catch the gentle tropical sea breeze which flows like silk from the lanai through our condo. Later, we may see how the bananas are ripening on the banana trees planted outside our condo's entry door or, perhaps, check if any ripe fruit has fallen from the tall papaya trees or indeed, any of the different types of tropical fruit trees scattered around the complex grounds.

When you zoom in using the hybrid satellite map below, our condo is directly up and across the blue oval pool from the green marker. You will notice that our condo building backs onto a treed, grassy area. It is the only one of the resort's 7 plantation-style buildings which does not back onto the various parking lots nor does it back onto any roads like the others do.

The comfort of HOME!

We enjoyed our stay here so much. It was just what we needed....close to the hub (walking distance to town, Farmer's Market, and beaches). It was beautifully furnished. It was a nice place to lie our head after a long day! We felt right at HOME!

Great location, price, and personable staff

Let me start with saying we enjoyed our stay and have no complaints about the unit. But somethings we did not realize was this unit is small and no real cooking facilities except for a microwave and electric skillet. We usually cook all our meals to keep dining out costs low, so this is a bit of a disappointment.

The unit is more of a studio than a one bedroom condo. The bathroom has no sink and the kitchenette sink is tiny for doing dishes. When washing dishes be careful with your water use because the water runs to the back of the counter and can easily get on to the floor. I think it is the slope of the counter top.

Also, there is a community grill, but a lot of the tenants use it so the gas runs out quite fast. We couldn't cook our dinner a couple of nights because we cooked later in the evening. So, if you do grill, do it early.

Parking is limited so if you aren't in before 7:00 p.m. you might end up looking for on street parking and having to walk a bit back to the complex.

Kona offers various farmers market shopping opportunities so do a Google search on what is available. The one nearest to the condo looks a little like a homeless camp and sometimes the product is over-riped and over the years I notice the prices have creeped up quite a bit and the quality is not as good as it used to be. So, do a little homework before you arrive.

Again, overall the unit worked well for us and we have no complaints. We enjoyed our time and the coffee shops nearby are great - Island Lava Java and Daylight Cafe are both worth visiting.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your observations, tips and 5-star rating! We do mention on our VRBO web page that this is a 400 sq ft plus lanai studio condo with 0 bedrooms, a galley kitchenette large sink and no stove but sometimes this information is overlooked by guests. The HOA rules prevents all condos here from having a traditional stove but we do have an induction cooker, induction frypan and a 3 qt. induction pot. We also have a counter-top convection oven, a veggie steamer, rice cooker and pasta cooker, etc.. The kitchenette is new and the counter top has a standard 4" high sealed back splash which has been adequate to contain any splashed water. We have never experienced the barbecues running out of gas, only the gas supply valve inadvertently being turned off in addition to the BBQ control dials by a prior guest user unfamiliar with procedures. The poolside double barbecues can be used during the same hours that the pool and hot tub are open which is 9 a.m to 9 p.m. after which the gas to the grills is shut off by staff at an appropriate time. Thanks for your email saying that you enjoyed the condo and plan on staying at our condo often. We look forward to your return. Aloha

Kona islander - Ernie at the beach

Would definitely recommend this studio suite for a couple or small family. The unit is clean and tidy, bed very comfortable. We enjoyed the use of the pool and hot tub as well. The location is quiet even though right close to the beach and downtown shops. The kitchen is set up with everything you need. Directions given to us were especially appreciated as our flight arrived late in the evening. Would encourage visitors to check out the downtown market as the produce is a lot cheaper than in the grocery stores. Also enjoyed evening at Huggos, a restaurant right on he beach just south of the condo. Look forward to coming back again.

Disappointing

It would have been nice to know this isn't really a condo, it's a hotel room called a condo. There is no stove, so can't cook meals and relax at home. There is a fridge so if all you're looking for is to keep your drinks cold, it's OK. And there are grills at the pool if you want to buy steaks, etc but certainly not convenient. There is no sink in the bathroom, the kitchen sink is about 10"X8" so hard to wash a full size plate. There are 40 some parking spaces for 150ish condos so huge issue. Street parking is impossible due to right on main street in Kapaa. So plan on paying for a parking garage. Overall, we were disappointed

Owner's Response: Kapaa is actually on a different Hawaiian island - the Island of kauai - and not on our island, the Island of Hawaii. Our complex is registered as private 425 sq. ft. condos, not as 250 sq. ft. hotel rooms. We highly recommend actually reading our webpage and viewing our photos and location before responding. Additionally, our kitchen is fully stocked with cooking appliances such as an induction cooker, frying pans and a 3 qt pot, as well as a convection toaster oven in which baking can also be done. The refrigerator is family size. There is a large sink in the kitchen and a pedestal sink in the bathroom.

Relaxing stay

We were a little nervous with this process as this was our first time renting a place from the owners. That said, we were very happy with the condo. It is just the right size for a couple or a small family. The furnishings are all very nice, the bed comfortable and appliances were sufficient. With access to restaurants within walking distance , there is very little need to cook , however if we wanted to grill we had access to the grills at the pool area. The grills are cleaned daily so there was no worry there. If we brought food back for later we were able to reheat in the microwave and store in the refrigerator. We had a coffee maker, toaster and a few other appliances And really did not need anything else. Pool access was easy as was the laundry area. Everything was clean and people were friendly. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

Excellent stay at the Kona Island Inn

I had an amazing time in Kona. The suite was exactly like the pictures show. Prime location, right downtown in the heart of Kona. The suite was clean and my children enjoyed the pool the hottub. I highly recommend staying at this location, great price, great location, neat and tidy!

Take a copy of Thundersea along with you to read then tour the book's exotic locations on the island of Hawaii. It's a great beach book! Arrange island, volcano and other tours in the lobby or nearby just out on Ali'i Drive, the beach road . Shop at the multitude of interesting Kailua-Kona village shops along Ali'i Drive. Dine at one of the 150 different restaurants every night. Check out the clubs and bars then simply stroll back to your condo. NELHA - National Energy Labs Hawaii (by the Kona airport), take the on-site free tour! King Kamehameha Palace - a tour within easy walking distance from your condo! Central to the famous Ironman Triathlon World Competition first half of October. The farmer's market for fresh fruit, produce, exotic flowers, Kona coffee and authentic Hawaiian-made souvenirs is just a half-block away, all at very reasonable prices. Luau's and hula shows nearby. Wyland Art Gallery is next door. For only a couple dollars each way you can take an open-air trolley, The Honu Express along Ali'i Drive through town between shopping malls, stopping at different beaches and shops en-route. You can see the sights in town while doing some shopping or getting out to do some snorkeling at one of the many bays! It's a fun way to get around! Your condo is central to all the different tropical bays where turtles hang out and whales spout. . . .

  • Our condo is best suited for 2 adults or a family of 4 with younger children As it is a studio condo, there is no separate bedroom. furnishings are Hawaiian style - the first is a queen size bed suitable for 2 people. The second is an adjacent Hawaiian- style sofa daybed with a roll-out trundle most suitable for up to 1 adult and 1 child sleeping in separate beds with mattresses 75" long.

Poolside barbeques for grilling your steaks or seafood for dinner - dine poolside or take back to your condo; view of pool, tiki torches, palms and plumeria flower trees. Our building, one of seven, is unique in that it backs onto a quiet area of lawn and banana trees. Our 425 sf (40m) condo is the quietest and most private as it doesn't back onto resort parking lots nor is it fronting on any public streets such as Ali'i Drive which has 24-hour car and pedestrian traffic. Our condo is just far enough from the beach so that any airborne sea spray and fine mist doesn't affect us. Relaxing on your lanai in the evening, taking in the old Hawaiian plantation setting, the tiki torches along the paths and the illuminated pool, you would think that this eye candy was a magical movie set. We chose our historic plantation-style condo for its unique beach location right in the heart of historic Kailua-Kona while still affording us a tranquil retreat in this beautiful tropical setting.
