About the property

6 bedrooms 6 baths

Our 3,300 square foot residence was built to accommodate 25 people so that we could offer a comfortable place in nature for large groups to enjoy. Read some of the reviews of our satisfied guests.

Safe Haven Forest Retreat is a unique 2 acre property that sits at the end of Wilderness Road at an altitude of 6,200 ft. It is the last private property on the road with three sides connected to the National Forest. You'll enjoy the broad mountain views and surrounding forest in this tranquil retreat. The wilderness is your back yard to enjoy. And yet, it is less than 1 mile to the town of Running Springs, 8 miles to Lake Arrowhead, and 18 miles to Big Bear Lake. You are literally in the middle of the mountains yet have all the amenities of the easy to reach resort towns. You can explore the National Forest and the mountain communities at your leisure. Or, you can just stay put and enjoy the spacious cabin and activity centers around the property, such as the boating pond, the rock creek and sandy beach, archery & air rifle range, Volleyball court, the climbing wall, the outdoor chess board, the mini zip line with low suspension bridge, the toboggan run and the many paths around the property and into the forest.

Notice to people who want to party: Our property was developed as a forest retreat where people could find a SAFE HAVEN to pursue their enjoyment, personal / spiritual growth, connectedness with nature and each other in a positive and uplifting way. With this in mind, we don’t want to have wild, drunken, disorderly, abusive, and destructive behavior on the property. If you are looking for a place to have a wild drunken party, don't choose us.

About Robert Phelps

As retired teachers we wanted to develop a place in the mountains where children could come to learn about nature. Our dream evolved from the idea of starting a youth camp to a more inclusive one where people of all ages could find a Forest Retreat that would be a SAFE HAVEN to convene with nature.

We built the house to create a spacious and comfortable environment where our family and friends, and short term renters would find a SAFE HAVEN to pursue their enjoyment and connectedness with nature and each other in a positive and uplifting way. With this in mind, we don’t want to have wild, drunken, disorderly, abusive, and destructive behavior on the property. If you are looking for a place to have a wild drunken party to go nuts in nature, please look for another place.

Robert Phelps purchased this house in 2007

Why Robert Phelps chose Inland Empire

After a three year search for the appropriate property, we chose this place for it's unique location; having the National Forest as our back yard and being an easy drive to all the other mountain areas. It is in the middle of the mountains yet has easy access to all the mountain resort communities and activities. From our home in Orange County it takes us 90 minutes to get to the property. Once here, we feel we are in another world where we can breath deep, relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.

What makes this house unique

We have a comfortable house with many activity centers around it like a mini resort that people of all ages will enjoy. Walk out the back door and you have wilderness. Walk out the front door and you have civilization. Walk around the property and you have the best of both worlds.

The size of the property (2 acres) and it's geographic features offer the space to create a number of activity areas. There is a boating pond with a sandy beach and rock creek with bridges across it. The tipi gathering area allows for small group activities overlooking the pond. There is also a climbing wall, Volleyball court, archery & air rifle range, large in ground chess board, and horseshoe pitch. And the picnic area behind the cabin allows for a large group gathering with fireplace, and B-B-Q units. There is also a small zip line over a suspension bridge 1 foot off the ground for kids. And, a 200 foot long zip line for those who take part in our Outdoor Adventure Program. Check the Amenities section under suitability for children.

Family Stay for Christmas!

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at the Safe Haven Retreat over Christmas Holiday! The house was nice and spacious enough for my 20 family members. There was enough rooms and bathrooms, some of the beds could use new mattresses because you could feel the springs when you laid on them. Also, a lot of the provided kitchen utensils were dirty upon arrival. Robert the owner was VERY responsive. I called a few times in the first days of our stay and every time he answered and provided advice.

We wanted a white Christmas and we got it! We were snowed in for the whole 4 days. It would have been nice if there were some sleds provided since we couldn't leave the retreat. Also, the place was advertised with a foosball table but was not there because of the previous guest. There were some movies provided and a nice projector system so that definitely helped.

Overall we had a very nice time at the Safe Haven Retreat.

Owner's Response: We do appreciate honest feedback and want to know about any problems that our guests had. I will let our cleaning company know about the dirty utensils being found. As for beds, this is the first we have heard about any mattress problems and I will look into it. There is no foosball table. It was the previous guests who broke the Ping Pong table. So, the replacement table was not ready for these guests. As for providing sleds, we have made it clear in our rental agreement that we only provide outdoor play equipment with our guided adventure program. Anyone coming to the mountains expecting snow should come with their own equipment. The only equipment we leave for our guests to use are snow shovels. All the sleds we have left as a courtesy for our guests in the past were so frequently destroyed or lost that we stopped replacing them. We like to be nice, but there is a limit to the freebies we can provide. We do try very hard to provide everything needed in the house but people have to be realistic. This group came with no food in the middle of a snow storm, no snow tire chains and little understanding of how to deal with deep snow and use a snow shovel. They had to ask a neighbor to give them a ride to the local store. I did come up to plow the snow out and chain up their cars to pull them out so they could get to the street. And, I loaned one of the ladies jumper cables to get her car started because the battery was dead. I didn't charge any extra for my time and felt they took it for granted that I owed it to them to get their cars out of the snow. This group expected much and appreciated little.

Large property and spacious house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for New Year's Eve ringing in 2017. We had approximately 26 people including kids. The house was spacious. It never felt cramed. There was so much space inside and on the outside property grounds. Kids had such a great time using the space outside by sledding, hiking and playing with the outdoor amenities available. We would definitely stay here again!

Amazingly beautiful place! Wow, it's hard to describe our experience this past weekend at this wonderful place! Our youth church group (25 of us) really enjoyed our experience! The house, scenery, snow, and the Outside Adventure Program guided by Robert (the owner) was amazing! I definitely recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a great place to have a good time and enjoy nature.

Safe Haven Retreat was Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Safe Haven just before a beautiful fall sunset. Our family enjoyed our Thanksgiving gathering in the spacious dining area. We also enjoyed jumping in piles of leaves, hiking, and exploring the area. The slide and sandbox was enjoyed by the grandchildren, as well as the large outdoor chess game. We paid for the Outdoor Adventure package, that included the equipment and Mr. Phelps teaching us about archery, air rifles, rock climbing, rappelling, and zip lining! I never thought I would but I did, zip line and it was fun! To top this great adventure day, it started to snow! A winter wonderland within an hour, we sled, made snow angels, snow people, and snowball fights! Safe Haven Forest Retreat was the perfect place for our large family vacation!

Owner's Response: What a wonderful family group. I really enjoyed doing the Outdoor Adventure Program with them. They even invited me afterword to join them for eating their delicious Pozole. We are always happy to hear how much our guests enjoyed their stay. This family got the best of both seasons with the fall leaves and the first winter snow.

Safe Haven was awesome! We brought our youth group up and they enjoyed the cabin and the outdoors so much!!! The paddle boats and rock climbing wall were awesome. There are little trails you can take around the property and the cabin was very spacious and comfortable.

Amazing home!

Our stay was absolutely great! The house was so clean and had everything that we needed. The surrounding property was so beautiful, and I would definitely consider staying at this location again. We were so grateful for our time there and the owner, Robert, was very helpful with all of our questions.
