About Melanie Prater

We have always been mountain and outdoor lovers with family activities including hiking, camping and boating. We were drawn to Hot Springs for the peaceful surroundings and wonderful town.

Melanie Prater purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Melanie Prater chose Asheville Area

Our family purchased this property as a second home, magical getaway in beautiful Hot Springs, NC. We loved the area so much we now call Hot Springs home. We now offer this beautifully restored 1922 Arts & Crafts Chestnut Log cabin as a vacation rental for your special home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with The Chestnut Log Cabin as it was an original 1922 Arts & Crafts home with a special feeling. Bonuses for us is the cabin is directly on the Appalachian Trail and walking distance to town with a wonderful rocking chair front porch. New! Secured wi-fi!

Nice cabin just off the AT

  • 3 of 5

The Chestnut was just enough of what we were looking for. Homey. It wasn't in perfect order, but the rental price reflects that it won't be perfect. The cabin made a good base for us to visit Biltmore Estates and enjoy the Hot Springs Resort. And what's a stay in a rustic cabin without a little hiking? It will be near perfect when the hot tub is fixed. But babysitting a hot tub (adding water twice a day) isn't the worst duty in the world. Thank you for an idyllic time.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your understanding about the hot tub. The small leak is fixed now. The alternative was for you not to have the use of the tub while the repair set up for 72 hours. Glad you could appreciate the time capsule of Chestnut Log Cabin. This property is 'rustic with modern accommodations' but this 94 year ol gal is well preserved! The construction, chestnut logs, predate the demise of the American Chestnut Tree. Built in 1922 just 6 years younger than the establishment of our National Parks system, celebrating 100 years this year, and contemporary with the establishment of the Appalachian Trail (1925). Thanks for appreciating how well Chestnut Log Cabin on the Appalachian Trail in Hot Springs NC are part of an experience of a living time capsule. Return soon.

We enjoyed our stay. The owners are hospitable. Good supplies. Used the heater at night: heated quickly and adequately. Comfortable mattress. Good supplies in kitchen. Accurate description. Walk to town. No AT&T service/tower in town.

Charming!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is close to the AT as it enters Hot Springs and a short walk into town. Since my son is hiking the trail, it was the perfect place to meet. I enjoyed my stay so much, I would love to return! I booked very "last minute" and Melanie was SUPER and quick to respond on all of our needs. The cabin is well kept and exactly what I expected. Cell phone service was no problem, (Verizon). The hikers enjoyed the hot tub. I fell in love with the town, which is full of friendly people. Thanks you Melanie!
