Great as always

  • 5 of 5

This was our fifth or sixth time staying at the Chestnut, and it was just as wonderful an experience as always. Melanie is such a thoughtful and helpful person, and she always makes sure the Chestnut’s most charming features stand out right when you arrive. The firepit was a great place for nightly conversations around the fire, and the warm decor in the living room and dining room helped facilitate board games and movies as we moved toward Christmas and the holiday season. Looking forward to our return next year!

We had a short weekend getaway and the cabin was wonderful. The owner called the night before our trip to tell me about the area and answer any questions. Cabin was clean and had all linens provided. Hot tub was great and we loved building a bonfire. We will stay again!! Loved the privacy.

Owner's Response: Folks love the authentic 1920's Arts & Crafts cabin handcrafted from the American Chestnut Tree. This was our second home prior to my family making Hot Springs our permanent home. We began restoration 15 years ago and strive to keep the flavor of the original era while including all modern conveniences; ourdoor hot tub, secured internet, full kitchen, Direct TV service, dining room & sun room. The large front porch is a big favorite of guest as well as the private back yard to enjoy the outdoor hot tub, grill and large fire pit. Thanks for appreciating and respecting our property, return soon!

Old log cabin close to AT but needs updates/refurb

  • 3 of 5

First, Melanie (owner) is great and seems really nice, though we only spoke on the phone. If you're considering this place, you should know that it's a pretty old log home that hasn't been updated in..well..maybe ever. All walls have paint or wall paper peeling, all plumbing fixtures are original (old, rusty), there's no central A/C (one single window unit for the entire home). The kitchen isn't super well appointed (two dull knives, a few pots, etc. Lacking some basic cooking utensils). The hot tub is small but nice, and the fire pit outside was a nice touch. It's very, very close to the AT, and the wifi was fast. Overall, I think it was a bit expensive for what we got, but given how small Hot Springs is, it's easy to inflate the value a bit.

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing Chestnut Log Cabin and appreciating the outdoor hot tub, right on Appalachian Trail, fast and secured wi-fi and wonderful outdoor firepit. My description of a 1922 log home indicates the age of the property and we have completed many updates without taking away the charm of an authentic Arts & Crafts bungalow. When we first acquired this property in 2002 we replaced all ceilings, wiring, refinished the original wood floors and replace plumbing and sewer lines. Last year the entire cabins windows were replaced ( I have saved them for a special green house at my home!)Most recently the bath tile in tub area repaired but we left the pink tile, most folks like it and have made favorable comments about the color. We feel we have a value for the property and all amenities offered and I accommodated you and your friends to shift dates with NO financial penalty, according to VRBO and my personal policy. I take all guests comment to heart and fact check to make sure things are not missing that we keep stocked in the kitchen. All accounted for; a full set of pots and pans with lids, (2) stock pots with lids, (1) large and (1) medium frying pan, extra large mixing bowl, large colander, measuring cups and spoons, muffin tin (12), (2) cookie sheets, broiler pan. The chefs knifes(2) had just recently been sharpened..... There are other properties that are brand new, we know everyone and help each other out, I will be glad to suggest a new rental for your next visit when you return to Hot Springs and our beautiful corner of the world.

They don't build them like they use too!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed staying in this wonderfully built log cabin. I marveled at the craftsmanship evident in all the details. We couldn't help but wonder about the cabin's beginnings and history. It was a lovely experience. I didn't realize it was situated right on the main road, which made me a little nervous for my 4 year old child who loves to run and play. The towels in the bathroom were all very damp. We didn't contact the owner about it, because we trusted they were clean. We put them out to dry, but it was a little off-putting. I agree with previous reviews about the hot tub, awkwardness of bathroom, and towel quality. But overall, a very fine experience, with a responsive host. I recommend packing a pair of slippers with non-slip bottoms to keep your feet warm while inside, and bring a robe or an extra plush towel for going back and forth between the hot tub and the house. We enjoyed the fire pit, and our lil one loved roasting marshmallows each night. Also, my lil guy had the hardest time saying goodbye to the sweet stuffed bear from the bunk bed. He said, "I love you" to the bear and "we'll be back soon" countless times as we were leaving. And if you want a 4 year old's perspective on the place... He said, "Mommy, this cabin is perfect!"

Owner's Response: ''Mommy, this cabin is perfect!" I will take your little guys rave review! So glad you appreciated the craftsmanship of this property. We are so grateful that in the 95 years the original woodwork was never painted nor carpet nailed to the wood floors. Thanks for your suggestion of the history of Chestnut Log Cabin. I will write up in more detail and have in the cabin information book. Chestnut Log was originally built in 1922 as a mountain retreat by a lady from upstate New York, later sold to a local family. The property remained as a primary home for this family until 2002 when we purchased it as our second home, later making Hot Springs our permanent home. Other interesting details in between... Of course the towels were clean, sorry for the dampness, I wish you would have contacted me and allowed me to correct this for you. We have, at guests request, added the fluffy large bath sheets, one per guests in different colors, in addition to the standard smaller towels that fit in the baskets in the authentic, yet smaller bathroom space. Slippers are a great suggestion as well as packing a beach towel(or use your color of choice big fluffy towel we provide). Return soon! Your little guy promised. See you soon!
