About Melanie Prater

We have always been mountain and outdoor lovers with family activities including hiking, camping and boating. We were drawn to Hot Springs for the peaceful surroundings and wonderful town.

Melanie Prater purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Melanie Prater chose Hot Springs

Our family purchased this property as a second home, magical getaway in beautiful Hot Springs, NC. We loved the area so much we now call Hot Springs home. We now offer this beautifully restored 1922 Arts & Crafts Chestnut Log cabin as a vacation rental for your special home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with The Chestnut Log Cabin as it was an original 1922 Arts & Crafts home with a special feeling. Bonuses for us is the cabin is directly on the Appalachian Trail and walking distance to town with a wonderful rocking chair front porch. New! Secured wi-fi!

Great as always

  • 5 of 5

This was our fifth or sixth time staying at the Chestnut, and it was just as wonderful an experience as always. Melanie is such a thoughtful and helpful person, and she always makes sure the Chestnut’s most charming features stand out right when you arrive. The firepit was a great place for nightly conversations around the fire, and the warm decor in the living room and dining room helped facilitate board games and movies as we moved toward Christmas and the holiday season. Looking forward to our return next year!

Lovely host of an older, well-lived-in home

  • 4 of 5

Melanie was an excellent host! She was in contact with us before our arrival and available for questions/concerns during our stay. This was a family-friendly home with lots of space and a small but pleasant backyard area. My only slight criticism, and I don't know that anything could be done about this without constant obsessive upkeep, is that the bathroom was a bit uninviting.... Despite her clear sign in the bathroom to please use the fan, the wallpaper was peeling and the window located in the shower was visibly moldy. There was also mold in the bathtub drain stopper (a bit yuck when giving our three-year-old her bath).

I think that if Melanie takes care of this (maybe by placing a dehumidifier in there?) I would consider this to be a five-star stay for those who really want to experience the log cabin life of the WNC mountains. We live nearby and I would certainly consider staying again, so don't be deterred from the prior comment, she is a superiorly attentive host and will surely address the issue.

Owner's Response: OK, so sorry about the wallpaper. Did you notice the newly regrouted tile and brand new sheetrock on the ceiling? The ceiling fan is newly installed as well. We are completing the rest of the bathroom by removing the wallpaper (wasn't that bad until the contractor peeled some paper to decide best route to go) We are installing beadboard up on top of the exposed wall to make the repairs and updates look as if it has always been there, just as we have with the rest of the house. We have to work between guests;) Thanks for loving the rest of Chestnut Log Cabin, built in 1922 and so very cozy! I am always available for guests during your visit. Sorry about the tub stopper, I have some on hand for housekeeping and could have brought one over to you, we are so close by. So..old stopper out, brand new stopper at Chestnut Log Cabin! Thanks for bring to my attention. Return soon and check out the restorations!

We had a short weekend getaway and the cabin was wonderful. The owner called the night before our trip to tell me about the area and answer any questions. Cabin was clean and had all linens provided. Hot tub was great and we loved building a bonfire. We will stay again!! Loved the privacy.

Owner's Response: Folks love the authentic 1920's Arts & Crafts cabin handcrafted from the American Chestnut Tree. This was our second home prior to my family making Hot Springs our permanent home. We began restoration 15 years ago and strive to keep the flavor of the original era while including all modern conveniences; ourdoor hot tub, secured internet, full kitchen, Direct TV service, dining room & sun room. The large front porch is a big favorite of guest as well as the private back yard to enjoy the outdoor hot tub, grill and large fire pit. Thanks for appreciating and respecting our property, return soon!
