The location of Barcadere provides a perfect example of the Brac's beautiful and diverse shoreline. Located on prime West End diving/snorkeling location, a short path from the house leads to a small cove called the Barcadere, (how the house got its name) carved out of the molten lava rock by the Caribbean Sea. The cove is about 12x30 feet and 10 feet deep and is protected from the ocean’s waves. A swimming pool ladder provides an easy entrance and exit for exquisite snorkeling, diving or just swimming for all ages. Two sea-pools surge in rhythm, each supporting a unique set of aquatic inhabitants, connected by underwater channels to the Barcadere. You’ll notice the sound of the shore itself, gurgling, softly resonating under you, literally breathing with the sea. The magic of this porous shoreline begins.
To the west the expansive, easy to stroll solid rock shore leads you to a larger, wilder cove powering the blow holes where the seas are funneled under the rock to erupt in wave geysers, sometime 20’ high! Further on, the shore adds sand and shells for beach-combing, and then finally to a rare, natural pure sand beach where sea turtles lay their eggs each year.
To the east the shore offers tidal pools and an easy walk to the cut, a man made inlet cut into the ironshore. Originally created to shelter boats, this natural saltwater 'swimming pool' is now used by swimmers, snorkelers and divers to access deepwater diving and snorkeling.
Directly in front of the house, approximately 100 yards off shore, is the coveted dive site of the Captain Keith Tibbitts...a Russian frigate sunken to provide an exceptional artificial reef. It is only diveable Russian military sunken vessel in the Western Hemisphere. In addition, about 50 yards to the left of the Barcadere is another sunken vessel used as a diving/snorkeling destination, with an abundance of sea life, including sting rays, sea turtles and multitudes of coral reef fish.
In the evening just sit back on the patio and catch the most wonderful sunsets you will ever see. Each one unique with the various tropical cloud formations that illuminate the sky in reds, pinks and purples until it eventually succumbs to total darkness, illuminating the solar system in a spectacular way.
This special property is very handy to the airport, grocery store, gift shops, restaurant, bank, liquor store and doctors' offices. Like to explore? Go to the bat caves, take the parrot walk, find ‘Blackfoot’, our neighborhood iguana, check out the light house on the bluff where you might have a sighting of the brown booby bird, hike up and into Peter's Cave where islanders went to survive the great hurricane of 1932, or go to the recreation park just a few minutes’ walk from the house. The area offers an abundance of natural wonders sure to delight guests of all ages.
The house has been privately enjoyed by our family since 1978. It has recently been completely refurnished and refitted to make your visit easy! The set-up is simple, you begin to unwind as soon as you cross the threshold. There are two small adjoining bedrooms on the ground level, and a separate large master suite with full bath and deck on the second level. The master suite has an outside entrance and is not connected to the downstairs bedrooms. Our island born partner Derwin Scott meets your flight. The house is spotless, the linens fresh, the kitchen is equipped with all the utensils needed, connected to a great room with spectacular panoramic views.

The kitchen was very well appointed and I appreciate all of the spices and cleaning items. The location is absolutely beautiful, right on the water with great sunset views.
I have to say I was missing sandy beaches by the end of the week and the public beaches on the island do have sand, but you will need a car to get to them. Also, the island is pretty specifically for those who want to scuba dive and there aren't a huge amount of options for sightseeing our other things to do. If you want island chill the entire time, this is the place, but if not, it may not be. Beautiful landscape and very nice people.
We were supposed to come back to the Brac last year. Five days before departure......I had a heart attack.
The owners were kind enough to give us full credit and book at a later date. We really love other places in the
Bahamas and caribbean......but there is something special about the Brac....just the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. We always snorkel at least twice a day and Barcadere is one of the most convenient places for this activity. We used the government funded service that provides a personal guide (free of charge) who will take you to all of the regular sites....and many you would never find on your own. The young guy who was our guide was really great. Our favorite restaurants were Star Island (for grouper most nights) and Pat's Kitchen (they had parrot fish which was excellent). Check out the little farmer's market every Saturday from 8am to noon. You can now rent SUP paddle boards at the scuba shop on the far west end of the South side. There is a lady we visit in the middle of the south side (ask around) where we feed wild land iguanas grapes. The curly-tail lizards in front of Barcadere......we feed pieces of cheese, eggs or bugs. One day a large (300' +) four-masted steel clipper ship dropped anchor right in front of Barcadere......ferrying passengers back and forth all day long. All in all the brac is the most relaxing place we have ever been. All of the locals are wonderful.......as are the owners of Barcadere. Again.....I wound like to thank Joanne......for her
kindness. We hope to be back in the near future.
If snorkeling is your thing - this is the best spot on the Island ! Our family of 5, three teenagers & two adults spent a fabulous week at Barcadere.
Our family enjoyed an excellent island living vacation from Jul 10-17 2016 at Barcadere West End Cayman Brac. The home and location met all of our needs. It was very quiet and peaceful. The weather was perfect with sunshine and beautiful blue/green Caribbean sea every day. At this very special West End north shore location of Barcadere on the reef we enjoyed beautiful sunsets every evening. The art work and island decor inspired our inner spirits to the simplicity of island life. Time stood still. The telescope provided us with close up views of scenery and diving excursions. Our family felt very welcome by the friendly people of Cayman Brac. Mr. Derwin Scott welcomed us at the Cayman Brac airport and introduced us to Barcadere. He was very helpful. Reef Divers Scuba provided valuable info and daily scuba tanks and weights for our use. They also recommended specific shore dive sites on the island. We all agreed that the very best site and reef for beautiful sea life and variety of coral was the Barcadere cove itself which we enjoyed immensely. We snorkeled the reef from your beautiful access cove daily. The outside shower and beach towels which you provided were very much appreciated. Tut Tut the black and white island cat began each morning as our guest and enjoyed a kitty breakfast with us. Market Place at Cross Roads was very convenient for all our grocery needs. We enjoyed dinners at Captains Table and breakfast at Star Island Restaurant. Together our family enjoyed a very unforgettable and unique vacation at Barcadere in your island home at Cayman Brac. We very highly recommend Barcadere and we plan to return.
If you are going to the Brac for scuba diving or snorkeling, the location and amenities of this place are perfect. It is close to both dive shops, the airport, market, liquor store, restaurants, bar.
The outdoor hose and shower were convenient and essential for our post-dive rinses. We were so close to diving that we were able to stop "home" to quickly rinse gear and ourselves before venturing out for lunch or exploring. After rinsing our gear, we'd hang it on the clothesline or in the sun.
We used the cutout in the ironstone with the ladder the owners provided for daily snorkeling right on the property. It was wonderful.
We fed the 2-3 cats that visited daily. Tut Tut, the older black and white cat, sat with me one day in the lounge chair outside. The owner says if you are not a cat fan, just ignore them and they won't return. We were happy for the companionship. We also liked the chickens and rooster that visited daily.
At night bring a flashlight (proved by the owner!) to the little tide pools out front and watch the red little shrimps with glowing/reflective orange eyes. You might also spot a fabulous long sea cucumber.
We found it very helpful that the main living area is spacious; we tend to spread our stuff out. there is only one couch, a futon that my husband and daughter opened up one day to take a nice nap. I found the chairs in the room to be perfectly comfortable. There's no TV or radio, which was fine with us. We had our phones and played music. There are books available to read. I added mine to the collection when I had finished it.
Initially we were disappointed that the bedrooms are accessed only from outdoors and that the master bedroom was also upstairs and outdoors. We quickly adapted, however. Just remember everything you need to bring upstairs with you when you go to bed. There are bathrooms/showers in all sleeping areas. Our daughter did not like the downstairs bedroom so joined us upstairs.
The A/C in the upstairs room had trouble keeping up with 90degree weather (summertime). It would finally start to cool after the sun had been down for a while, and by morning the room was very cool.
View from the upstairs deck is sooo nice.
There's no house on one side of the property, and the house on the other side was boarded up. We loved the privacy.
Regarding Cayman Brac itself, I'll let the other reviewers comments speak for themselves. I'll add that the pizza at Buccaneer's bar was delicious.
Our two couples, in our 70's, immensely enjoyed our stay. Upon our arrival we were struck by the natural beauty of the location. Not mentioned by other reviewers also were the many little artistic creations throughout the house and landscaping, to the point of being almost an art gallery. These art works are uniquely crafted by a very talented artist or artistic decorator and were much enjoyed by us. Our 9-day stay involved mostly snorkeling and we managed to carve out 7 glorious days of perfect weather. We did explore all the main snorkeling areas on the island and found that the very best in terms of access and varieties and quantities of fish was at the Handcuff Reef. But in terms of sheer beauty of healthy coral formations, the reef just outside the Barcadere was the best. There was a problem with the access ladder in the cove however. It was pretty much rusted out and partially broken to the point where only our most agile guest could safely handle it. I would definitely disagree with the description in the web site of "easy access." Fortunately, Derwin suggested that we go next door to a completely accessible area with firm ladder where we could easily swim down to the same coral off the Barcadere.
We were visited continually by the curly lizards, chickens, native birds, and even the parrots who showed up around 4:30 each afternoon screeching loudly. I saw the big iguana in the little park nearby. The feral cat "tut tut" brought two of her friends and all were constantly begging for food, which one of our guests finally provided. The cat situation was unfortunate since they do considerable environmental harm to the native animals. During our stay we personally saw them kill and eat a native bird and a chick.
Throughout, we found Joanne to be the perfect host, readily available by phone. Ditto for Derwin, who provided valuable assistance and advice. The house itself is a dream of cleanliness, beauty, and most important, is wonderfully integrated with the natural surroundings. I was amazed by how roomy the great room downstairs and the upstairs bedrooms are, not really evident in the pictures. The large kitchen was elaborately equipped for just about anything one would want to cook, and many spices and condiments were available. We mostly ate breakfasts and lunches at the house and ate out for dinner (Star Island Restaurant is highly recommended for authentic, delicious, and reasonably-priced Caribbean cuisine).
