Marci purchased this estate in 2011
The Chetco River Inn is a breathtaking wilderness estate on a private 36 acre parcel that's surrounded by the Siskiyou National Forest and built by Clay and Sandra Bruger. Since it's creation, the Inn has inspired memories of warm hospitality, natural beauty, and unique outdoor activities. After two recent changes of ownership, the Chetco River Inn is open once again. The popular caretakers, Oscar and Kat, are ready to welcome all visitors...and introduce you to he property and many of their beautiful, unique, and friendly animals.
In the summer months, we enjoy swimming and floating down the gentle Chetco river. In the winter, we love fishing for Salmon and hiking the many surrounding unspoiled acres. During the Spring, Summer, and Fall we enjoy observing the Pinot Noir vineyard. For more information about our wonderful property, please see our web site, www.thechetcoriverinn, or visit us on Facebook.
Our local mushroom club rents The Chetco River Inn lodge for our annual holiday meeting. The grounds are so beautiful, and the lodge is really warm and charming for our potluck. We always have such a great time that the group has voted to hold this meeting there every year. Thank you Marci and Dan!
We spent four short days enjoying all this home has to offer! The grandchildren swam, swam and swam some more. Hiking, biking and family games. We had many meals together and a great BBQ. The kitchen is easy to work in and well appointed. Cooking with gas is a little different but easily mastered. Plenty of room for many cooks and many meals - two dishwashers! What a treat when there are 15 people to feed. The bedrooms are plenty as are the bathrooms. No one felt like we were crowded. I really don't think we had a down side because there were so many positives! We really loved being off the grid. Sweet, sweet family time. We will definitely return. Many, many thanks!!
We stayed at the Inn for a family wedding and loved the house and area. The caretakers were especially wonderful people and we enjoyed meeting them. We loved seeing the pot-bellied pig, peacocks and chickens as well.
It is a great place for a family to stay and enjoy nature.
We believe we even saw a bear on our ride out the last morning at 4:00 a.m.
Our extended family, 13 and 2 dogs, find a summer house every year to share for a week, and we were lucky to find the Chetco River Inn plus the Rock House cottage. It is a very beautiful spot, right on the river with outdoor furniture, a fire pit, a horseshoe pit, farm animals and areas to bike ride. The caretakers were nice and helpful, and we enjoyed seeing the sheep and pigs wandering around. The peacocks were a little noisy in the mornings, but we got used to it after a while. I agree with some other comments that a gas or charcoal grill would have been convenient but it had attractive bedrooms, huge great room and dining room table that expanded to seat us all. The best equipped kitchen we have enjoyed in 13 years of summer rentals. - Be aware that cell phone coverage is pretty much nonexistent and the wifi is only for light emailing and such, so be prepared to put all that stuff away for a while and enjoy "getting away from it all”. Altogether a memorable holiday.
We rented the Rockhouse for a week in early August and really enjoyed it. Loved swimming and fly fishing in the Chetco, interacting with all the animals, (sheep wrangling, especially!), picking fresh blackberries every morning, local hikes and walks, enjoying the coast, etc. etc. There is no Wifi in the Rockhouse, so if you need to stay in contact with the outside world, it's a bit of a challenge (and only possible if you stand in the back outside the Big House). Also, no cell phone service or TV. But, if you WANT to disconnect...this is a great place to do it.
The caretakers (Kat and Oscar) are wonderful people and their positive "vibe" and generosity really add to the experience.
One thing I would note: if you're needing to do a lot of cooking, the Rockhouse kitchen is quite small (no microwave) and not particularly well-equipped in terms of kitchen utensils, though well stocked for cups, plates, silverware, etc. (For example, no kitchen tongs, no measuring cup, no good knife for cutting veggies or meats.) But these are small inconveniences and if you're prepared with your own kitchen "must haves" you'll be fine.
One addition to the house that would be awesome would be screen doors, so you can keep the front and side doors open and really bring the outside in, while keeping the mosquitoes and flies out!
I would definitely recommend the Rockhouse for people who want unplug and take a break from the world. (I didn't miss listening to NPR for one minute!)
We had the best time at the Chetco River Inn.
There were three families, 6 kids total(ages 5, 3, 2, 6 mo) and 6 adults. There was plenty of space for us all and having attached baths to each bedroom was great. The care takers Oscar and Kat were super gracious and kind, and very welcoming and helpful all weekend long. The swimming was phenomenal and safe for all the little kids. Plenty of floaties and rafts and all day fun in the sun. A great bbq pit and fire pit in front of house to hang out by in the evening. The kids loved visiting the animals daily and the cute country store by the care takers house. Only bump was the power went out for the day(remember, off the grid!) but it was after breakfast had been made so it didn't effect us too much, we were at the river all day! Oscar went above and beyond(on a Sunday) and got it working again. Wonderful memories made and already planning for same time next year.
Our private 36 acre property offers acres of river frontage, a long stretch of beach along the river, swimming holes, rapids, fishing, boat put-in, deep water holes for fishing or jumping, walking trails, our vineyard, veggie garden, orchard, guest camping areas, fire pit with grill, hammocks, a horse shoe pit, and seating along the banks of the river.
Enjoy world-class Salmon and Steelhead fishing directly in front of the Inn and cottage during their season. Or, local guides can be recommended for those who wish to float fish using one of their boats down a long stretch of the river. Cutthroat trout fishing is also popular in nearby tributaries of the main Chetco river. River kayaking, floating, and paddleboarding can be done with easy river access from the property. Besides trails on our property, nearby hiking and mountain biking trails are in the surrounding Siskiyou National Forest and the nearby Kalmiopsis Wilderness areas.
