My husband, Chris, started as an organic beef farmer. When he retired from that, he started breeding Belgian draft horses and working the farm for hay and timber. He then started a sawmill, excavation and alternative construction business that exists presently. Chris is active in local government and is on the Boards of many local organizations. I am a retired special needs school teacher who presently works on the farm, volunteers in the community and manages the vacation rental property.
Mary Jane Cappello purchased this house in 1973
The location of King Mountain House at the back of Horseshoe Hollow Farm offers a very serene, secluded and quiet retreat. However, it is close enough to all of Rappahannock County's villages when activity is desired. The house's design offers an open, spacious bright and comfortable getaway with all modern conveniences. It is equally suitable for couples and/or small groups.
The King Mountain House's design makes it a suitable and comfortable getaway for 2-8 It is also a perfect property for small specialty groups such as yogis, equestrians, school/family reunions and hunters.
We enjoyed our stay in this lovely, private and well appointed home. The owners of this property are gracious and focused on providing a great experience for those seeking to decompress and enjoy nature. We have recommended this property to friends and would stay here again.
We enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with local and out of town family (who had no problem getting to the property from Dulles airport, very convenient). Everything we needed was there, and the entire rental process - rental to check out- was easy and efficient. My husband and I plan to return several times a year to enjoy the different seasons and the peaceful surroundings. Chris and Mary Jane are gracious hosts who take great care in ensuring their guests comfort.
Chris was great. His help and local knowledge is much appreciated. See you next year.
We thoroughly enjoyed our reunion in the King Mountain Home. There was plenty of open space & fabulous views. The home is very well stocked. And, when the heavy winds took down a tree & our power, the owners promptly had the home on generator restoring our power.
Do not hesitate to rent this wonderful home for your next Virginia mountain vacation! With three levels, it served us (three couples) very well. The view from the deck and patio is stunning, and at night, if you enjoy such things, there is optimal stargazing. Plenty of shooting stars , night sounds...and no mosquitoes! (Our visits have been in August.)
If you enjoy seeing wildlife, you'll probably see some. On our first morning, my husband and I woke up early and crept out to the patio area to see what we might see. In the meadow just below the house were three buck, two doe, a wild turkey, a skunk, and a big old hawk in a nearby tree. During our visit we heard a screech owl, lots of pileated woodpeckers, and many other birds, some of which we could not identify.
The town of Washington is historical, charming, and boasts The Washington Inn. We're planning to save our money during the next 11 months and have dinner there one night next year.
The owners of King Mountain House are engaging and friendly people who will help with anything that may be needed -- although we haven't really lacked a single thing either time we've stayed at there. The house has the best-appointed kitchen any of us has ever had in a rental. The beds are comfortable, the linens are plentiful, interesting books abound, and the overall experience is superlative.
Once you stay there, you'll want to go back!
We rented the house with 2 other couples and thoroughly enjoyed our time there, however brief. The place was clean. The kitchen had everything we needed and plenty of it. Mary Jane and Anne were VERY responsive with any and all questions no matter what time. Each room had its own bathroom. The view is beautiful and peaceful with plenty of wildlife - turkey, deer and bunnies along with woodpeckers, hummingbirds and hawks and even bats at night. The driveway is LONG and our friends bottomed out a couple of times on some rocks but we were told to go slow. Flint Hill is quaint as is Sperryville and Luray with wineries close by. We cooked the whole time and thoroughly enjoyed it!
