“The mountains shall bring peace to the people,” reads a large carved wooden sign welcoming visitors to Radium Hot Springs, located in British Columbia’s serene Columbia Valley.

The sign has been in place for 80 years, greeting residents and visitors alike to the tranquil region just over three hours west of Calgary. Columbia Valley’s mountain backdrop and snow-blanketed trees lend a natural peace to the landscape, allowing adventurers, explorers and wanderers alike to relax and rejuvenate.

For anyone looking to recharge their batteries, either by soaking in the region’s famous hot springs or driving away their worries on the golf course, the region and its premiere destinations are the perfect place to unwind.

Radium Hot Springs

Apart from the warm, natural waters from which it gets its name, Radium Hot Springs hosts a variety of attractions to experience while in the Columbia Valley. The best attractions also allow sightseers to enjoy the area’s natural beauty at the same time.

Guided tours of nearby Kootenay National Park give natural history buffs a chance to learn more about The Burgess Shale, regarded as one of the world’s most important animal fossil sites. At an estimated 505 million years old, it offers some of the oldest fossils of complex animals in the world. Meanwhile, wildlife enthusiasts can marvel at the majestic Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. The animal is so common in the area that Radium Hot Springs hosts the annual Headbanger Festival to celebrate them.

Radium Hot Springs also offers world-class golf courses, including the Springs Course, where guests can take in the stunning scenery along the Columbia River while trying its go-for-broke par-five holes.

Invermere on the Lake

Just 15 minutes south on Hwy 93, you’ll find Invermere on the Lake. Invermere translates to “at the mouth of the lake” in Scottish Gaelic, and the name is appropriate, as it sits on the northwest shore of Lake Windermere. The community hosts 4,000 in permanent residents, but grows tenfold in the summer months due to its warm weather.

Winters do not mean less to experience though, as vacationers can watch (or perhaps participate in) the Columbia Valley Pond Hockey Championship, which takes place annually on Lake Windermere. The annual volunteer-run event features teams of six amateur hockey players from as far as Vancouver and Spokane. Proceeds go to the Columbia Valley Rockies, the local junior hockey team.

Windermere Valley Museum offers insight into the community’s roots as a mining town. Historical sites include an old Canada Pacific Rail station as well as extensive archives and photo collections that will remind you of a simpler time before the hustle and bustle of big city life.

Panorama Mountain Resort

The enormous Panorama Mountain Resort is just 20 minutes west of Invermere along Toby Creek Road. The pine-covered mountain offers magnificent mountain landscape views that will take your breath away.

Standing at 2,375 meters above sea level, Panorama Mountain Resort is among the highest alpine resorts in all of Canada. Snowshoeing and dog-sledding are among the relaxing, low-impact snow sport activities that allow visitors to explore the massive mountain.

For those who need let off a little steam, the state-of-the-art resort is the ultimate destination for skiers and snowboarders. Ten ski lifts provide access to nearly 3,000 patrolled acres of skiable terrain, with runs for every skill level. You’d be hard-pressed to try all 120 runs in your first visit — though you may want to try.

Fairmont Hot Springs

Located 27 kilometres southeast of Invermere, Fairmont Hot Springs is one of Columbia Valley’s best kept secrets, with fewer than 500 year-round residents.

The community is named for its crystal clear, natural and odourless hot springs. At 1.2 million gallons, the hot springs are the largest of their kind in all of Canada. Savvy vacationers flock to the cozy community to take advantage of its natural beauty, soothing atmosphere and small town charm. At an average 39 degrees, a soak in the naturally heated, mineral-rich waters are good for your body and soul.

All that rest and relaxation can be hungry work, so don’t forget to head over to the locally owned and operated bistro From Scratch. Their outdoor patio features a gorgeous view of the Purcell Mountains, so ask to be seated outside if the weather is nice. True to their name, they offer fresh, local and seasonal dining options prepared from scratch. Wish you could take some home with you? From Scratch offers regular cooking classes so you can share what you’ve learned with your friends and family back home.

About Christy Gilkes

I currently live in Calgary and work at the Alberta Children's Hospital

Christy Gilkes purchased this house in 2007

Why Christy Gilkes chose Lake Windermere

We bought this property for two reasons, the value for the large square footage and because its great for two families with the separation between upstairs and downstairs

What makes this house unique

This is a terrific home to visit with two families. The upper and lower levels are nearly identical. And there is a Steel door to shut between levels to prevent sound transfer.

Great for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this property with our family of 4 - it was very spacious and nice to have two family rooms as well as a steel door to shut off the basement so the kids could make noise but it was quiet upstairs. Very clean and spacious
