October 21, 2011 – New York Times, Emily Brady:

“Sonoma County may be best known for its wineries and the tony (sic) towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma, but West County, as locals call the area around Sebastopol, is where the vineyards begin to give way to rolling hills, bohemian enclaves and the wild Pacific Coast beyond. Sure, there’s wine produced here — excellent pinots in particular — but there’s plenty to explore beyond it, especially around Sebastopol, where in recent years new restaurants, shops and live music venues have opened, securing the town’s position as West County’s arts and culture hub.”

American as Apple Pie

“‘I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,’ you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.

Spend some time floating in an inner tube down the Russian River and walking amid ancient giants—one over 1,400 years old—at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Poke around the old Russian stockade at Fort Ross, which turns 200 in 2012, or the Spanish adobe mission, San Francisco Solano, in Sonoma town. Hunt for antiques along Petaluma’s downtown Victorian row, and dine on seasonal sake-steamed, aged abalone at Michelin-starred Cyrus in Healdsburg. And don’t miss a flaky, fruit-packed slice of Gravenstein pie from Mom’s Apple Pie, a roadside stop outside Sebastopol. It ranks up there with a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir as a real taste of Sonoma.”

This was the nicest vacation we’ve taken in years. The cottage is just lovely, with everything you need short of food. Heidi is the most gracious host and loads of fun to chat with.

Did I mention the kitchen? We rent from owners all the time and we’re pretty used to bare bones in the kitchen. What a lovely surprise to find nice high end appliances. Made our time so much easier because we like to cook with local stuff when we travel.

So about the location... this is smack in the middle of wineries in every direction. Remember, don’t skip a tasting room just because it’s on the main drag! If your avocation leans toward beer instead, this spot is close to RRB and others.

Thanks Heidi!

blackberry cottage Oct 2017

  • 4 of 5

The place is lovely and very well-kept up. Location is private yet convenient. Unfortunately we needed to leave early due to the Sonoma-Napa fires, but Heidi was quite gracious about it. When we return to Sonoma we plan on staying there again..

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the cottage, along with WineBerry Lodge, for my 40th birthday. My mother, sister, brother-in-law, and niece stayed in the cottage. It was perfect. They could be part of the celebration, but then getaway to put the baby to sleep. The cottage has everything you need. And Heidi was amazing to work with. She runs a beautiful home and is extremely friendly. This was a fantastic stay!

Outstanding stay at the Blackberry Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend the Blackberry Cottage. Beautiful quiet setting, great location in the Russian River Valley wine country, the cottage is immaculate, the host is wonderful and very accommodating, she has thought of everything one would need for your stay. Fresh fruit and a couple bottles of excellent wine upon arrival. Three excellent wineries within walking distance. During our one week stay we did the San Francisco Bay cruise, Napa Valley wine train, Sonoma Valley wineries, the Redwoods, Russian River to Bodega Bay ocean drive, Healdsburg Dry Creek Road wineries, along with the nearby wineries without feeling rushed or stressed.
