October 21, 2011 – New York Times, Emily Brady:
“Sonoma County may be best known for its wineries and the tony (sic) towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma, but West County, as locals call the area around Sebastopol, is where the vineyards begin to give way to rolling hills, bohemian enclaves and the wild Pacific Coast beyond. Sure, there’s wine produced here — excellent pinots in particular — but there’s plenty to explore beyond it, especially around Sebastopol, where in recent years new restaurants, shops and live music venues have opened, securing the town’s position as West County’s arts and culture hub.”

American as Apple Pie
“‘I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,’ you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.
Spend some time floating in an inner tube down the Russian River and walking amid ancient giants—one over 1,400 years old—at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Poke around the old Russian stockade at Fort Ross, which turns 200 in 2012, or the Spanish adobe mission, San Francisco Solano, in Sonoma town. Hunt for antiques along Petaluma’s downtown Victorian row, and dine on seasonal sake-steamed, aged abalone at Michelin-starred Cyrus in Healdsburg. And don’t miss a flaky, fruit-packed slice of Gravenstein pie from Mom’s Apple Pie, a roadside stop outside Sebastopol. It ranks up there with a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir as a real taste of Sonoma.”
We stayed at Blackberry Cottage for 2 nights with another couple, both of us with ~18 month old daughters and this was the perfect spot to celebrate for a birthday weekend! Location is perfectly situated within walking distance to 3 wineries and a quick drive to great eating at Underwood for dinner and Willow Wood for Sunday brunch in Graton.
The cottage is extremely well designed and decorated and has a very cozy feel. Other than the stairs which both our daughters wanted to climb (and we were forewarned about this in advance from Heidi...we managed to divert them by putting some barstools at the bottom ;) it was a great open layout that was perfect for all of us to interact but having the second bedroom on a separate floor gave all of us plenty of privacy.
And the amenities are unmatched compared to any other rental home we've been to! To be greeted with wine, fruit, bottles of water and coffee (which we had forgotten to bring with us so it was a welcome surprise) in addition to several customized toiletries, there were unique touches throughout. And in the garage was a ping pong table and several other games to play on the large level driveway area. Additionally, the king bed in our bedroom was one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept on....we compared it to sleeping in a cloud :)
And last but certainly not least, it was a real pleasure interacting with Heidi, one of the owners. She genuinely wants to ensure everything is perfect with your stay and was extremely gracious and accommodating with our group, providing info for local restaurants and activities.
We really look forward to coming back again in the future, possibly with a bigger group to stay at the Wineberry or back at the Blackberry!
Without exaggeration, Blackberry Cottage and it's companion Wineberry Lodge rank as the highest quality property and accommodation our family has found in traveling. Internet pictures can only suggest the delightful experience
of staying there: warm and inviting with lovely grounds; rustic charm and elegant country-style decor, equipped to meet every practical need; totally comfortable -- especially the beds; special and caring touches everywhere which reflect the owners' pride in developing this treasured property over many years. There is even a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen and terrace with an authentic stone pizza oven. Our weekend visit was for a family wedding in the beautiful California wine-country. It could not have been more memorable or complete!!
Like WineBerry Lodge, there is nothing to want in this beautifully designed and furnished home. It is perfect for a small family or two couples.
Private. Quiet. And close to the best wineries in Sonoma County. The owners knew what they were doing when they designed and built this perfect getaway. We are definitely coming back. B & L, San Ramon, CA
What a fantastic gem! Blackberry Cottage was perfect for our double date/couples weekend away in Sonoma. The house was great for two couples. We each had plenty of space with our own bathroom. The living room and kitchen were cozy. The house was spotless with everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and there was even a fan available (my husband usually sleeps with a fan). Heidi was great to rent from. She always provided quick responses and was available for us, had we needed anything. The location was great! Super close to wineries (Merry Edwards Winery is right next door and wines are gorgeous!), a little market and restaurants. I would definitely rent Blackberry Cottage again. Thank you, Heidi, for opening up your amazing home!
What a great long weekend at Blackberry Cottage! The property is just awesome...Blackberry Cottage is tucked back behind the main house (Wineberry Lodge), but has ample parking space available, and is on a very quiet corner of the overall property.
We were there at the same time as a large party at the main house, and unless we were out in the driveway of our house, we couldn't even hear them while they were in their outdoor area. So privacy is still very honored, even with them being close to each other. (We're considering looking at renting both houses in the future for full family gathering in Sebastopol, hopefully as early as next year. Crossing fingers it will work out!)
Blackberry Cottage is spacious, comfortable, up to date with decor and fixtures, and kept very clean. The linens were abundantly provided. It was just my husband and I, so we only used one bed, which was the king bed upstairs...it was SO COMFY!
This was our first visit to the Sonoma County/Sebastopol area, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was as woodsy as it was. The property, in particular, reminded me of where I grew up in the Southern California mountains. One of the memories that came flooding back was the presence of spiders in various places. Webs weren't a problem inside...although I did have a "daddy long leg" spider keeping me company in the downstairs bathroom for a couple of the days we were there. This isn't indicative of a dirty house...this is indicative of a house that is in a woodsy area!
Another great plus to renting Blackberry is it's walking-distance location to several wineries/tasting rooms. Also, it's less than a mile to a little spot on Graton Rd that has a couple of restaurants that we were able to grab a bite at. Although, the roads don't have sidewalks. Apparently, it's best to walk facing the oncoming traffic, which can be tough in spots because the shoulder gets pretty narrow. But it's still doable. I probably wouldn't do the walking after dark, personally.
Also, there are some decks of cards and a couple of games tucked away in a cupboard. A hair dryer was provided in the bathroom downstairs. There was even a disposable shower cap, which was handy because I forgot mine at home!
This was a great vacation home, and we will return in the future. Thank you, Heidi and Brent, for providing such a wonderful space for our weekend away!
My extended family stayed in both houses for a family wedding and were wow-ed by this place - it is absolutely wonderful. Everything from the linens to the cooking equipment to furniture is of the best quality, the kitchen is wonderfully supplied for large groups (one of us is a chef and could function with ease), the outdoor eating and cooking area is so inviting and comfortable, the property is immaculate and beautifully maintained - and it is quiet and private, while close to everything in the county. Great restaurants ¼ mile away. This is a rare gem for a large gathering like a family reunion
We're just 5 minutes outside of Artsy Sebastopol within a short drive of the: site of the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's, 'The Birds' in Bodega Bay (20 minutes) with wind surfing, whale watching, & beach combing. The redwood-draped Russian River (10) with river rafting, canoeing. Thrilling River Rock Casino (35). Wine- and brew-laden Hopland (40). Bohemian Guerneville (15). Trendy and restaurant-rich Healdsburg (20) with more wineries than can be seen in one day. Natural hot springs Calistoga (45) famous for its Mud Baths. Sea kayaking playground at Jenner (35). Historic Fort Ross (60), and legendary Napa (60).
Additionally, just minutes from local cycling and walking trails provides that miles and miles of scenic, human-powered (only) Sonoma country recreational trails and Sebastopol Golf Course. Walking distance to Merry Edwards winery, Red Car winery, Dutton winery.
Enjoy Sebastopol's wonderful farmers market in downtown square open on Sundays 10:00 to 1:30. Also is the the famous Andy's Fruit Basket market just 3 minutes down the road for a great selection of organic fruits & vegetables, and less than a mile from Mom's Apple Pie, truly world recognized and recently (2012) featured in National Geographic Traveler Magazine
