D A Mihelic purchased this House in 1989
Why D A Mihelic chose New Franklin
We grew up in the area and took advantage of the recreational activities as children. Wife is a life resident of the area. We moved back to the area after military service and bought a water lot in 1987. We have a rich history of100+ years which connects us with the Ohio, Erie and Pennsylvania/Ohio Canals, Delaware Indians, Portage Path, Ohio Dept of Wildlife, Portage Lakes State Park, Connecticut Land Grants, the Western Reserve, prohibition, farming, coal mining and water sports. Today, most residents living in the area will tell you they live in Portage Lakes which encompasses the cities of New Franklin, Green and Coventry Twp. If a resident tells another Ohio resident they are from Portage Lakes, most will know where you live. When given the official name of your resident city, the majority will have no idea where you live. During the 1980's and 1990's a transition from weekend cottages to upscale modern homes began. As Carolyn Vogenitz, author of 'Portage Lakes Then & Now' has stated, it became a sardine & caviar look. Many a new upscale home might sit next to a tiny cottage dating back to the early 1900's.

Perfect Location, Perfect Accomodations
I had an excellent stay. This place had all the accommodations of a four star hotel. Amazing!
Todd was a great guest. He was looking for a quiet place to reach a decision. We hope the atmosphere helped him. We would enjoy hosting him again.
Beautiful, relaxing place to stay.
The property is beautiful ad is located in a very great location. Padding is great and most boats are traveling with no wake except for two areas that are well marked. You are 5 minutes from both the towpath and a disc golf course. The spacious apartment in the basement is very quiet and very well appointed. At the end of the day relax on your own private patio where you can watch the boats, black ducks, great blue heron and canadian geese all passing by your private retreat. The owners were great and it is definitely a place that I would return to.
Tom and Boot,
We enjoyed hosting you in our guest suite. Less than half our guests take advantage of the great water experience available. Glad you enjoyed it. We loved your beautiful kayaks.
Thanks for leaving our suite in such clean condition. It is a big help when preparing for a new guest.
We are happy to host you again should you plan a return visit to the Portage Lakes.
Great place to stay!
We rented this unit for a week in July for a family reunion in the Akron area. Each family rented their own place since we were a group of 20-23 people on any given day. Every family agreed we had THE BEST place. Although Akron was hot, the AC was great! The setting was gorgeous, there was an outdoor place for folks to sit and talk/eat, the kitchen was well equipped (we even served blueberries, bacon and pancakes for everyone in our reunion and had plenty of room), the bedrooms were spacious, great laundry room attached to unit, and all this was in a quiet neighborhood on a canal fed from a lake. Lots of wildlife to watch including ducks and birds. Landlord is a really nice guy and eager to please. I would definitely rent this unit again, but I would have to beat out our other families for the next reunion!
Thank you so much for your kind words. It gives us great pleasure when our guest are very happy with our vacation rental.
Thank you for the the great clean up. You even did some laundry, which was not necessary.
Hope to see you again.
Fantastic hosts, spacious clean property with everything needed for a relaxing stay.
Quiet place to sit outside and enjoy a meal and State Park nearby to explore
Our family enjoyed our quiet weekend getaway. We spent much time outside enjoying the view and chatting. The owner was very helpful with information and also showed us 'where he grew his own worms for fishing'. We enjoyed some lite fishing, although next time I'd bring bug spray standing so close to the water. I'd also bring bottled water for coffee and drinking. The owner graciously provided 6 bottles of water and coffee. We drink lots of water and are very particular about water. The water here does have a slight sulfur smell, but if you're not fussy about that, it's fine. The apartment is below the owners living quarters was clean and spacious and very comfortable. The beds were great, too. Yes, the owner lives upstairs and sometimes you can hear him and his wife walking around, but it really is quite nice. Our little family get away was quite enjoyable. Our main reason for staying here was so that we could explore the National Park and the home's quaint location just off the lake.
Thank you for your review. We enjoyed hosting your family and were very pleased with the cleanliness of our guest suite after your departure. We hope to see you again.
We rented this beautiful house with our son-in-laws parents. We are on the verge of being first-time grandparents. We traveled from Cincinnati, Dayton and South Point Ohio because our daughter was too pregnant to travel. The house made the perfect location to share meals and bond. The owner was an excellent host and everything about the house and surroundings made us feel like we were at home. We highly recommend this property!
It was a pleasure to host your family. I was pleased to taste deep fried turkey for the first time and very much enjoyed it. We very much appreciate the cleanliness of our guest suite upon your departure.
