Our Lake Hartwell, Custom Built home is in a Gated 4 home community with a park like setting that is truly spectatular. We enjoy sitting on the front porch looking at the 'park' just as much as sitting on the back porch viewing the lake. The house is so close to the lake with unobstructed views and a gentle walk. We've been coming to Lake Hartwell for over 10 years and have never seen a lake home in a better setting or with a better view.
Another favorite thing about our property is that it is less than 7 minutes off I-85 which makes it so convenient. We used to rent different lake houses and other than an old dirty home, the # 1 problem we would have is getting off the highway excited to get there only to find that we had another 25 minute drive through questionable areas just to get to the house. Not with ours!
I'm a custom home builder in Atlanta, Ga and built our dream home on the best lot I could find. We have all the amenities you would find in a fine home (granite countertops, upscale appliances including a food warmer built into the island, and even a floor heater in the master bathroom for fall and winter guests. Our priority when building our home was to have an upscale lake home yet with a cozy lake feel so we would feel like we were at the lake and not in Atlanta.
Our home is perfect for one family or two! We have 2 King sized beds so if you are used to sleeping on a King you don't have to fight with another couple over who gets the King...you both do!
The master bedroom has its own bath with a luxurious oversized shower, garden tub, double vanity, and floor heater. The upstairs bedroom with the King bed has it's own bath with tub/shower and single vanity. The other two bedrooms upstairs share a Jack-n-Jill Bath with tub/shower and a double vanity. The one bedroom has two bunk beds (4 beds total) and the other has a queen bed. Between the 3 upstairs bedrooms is a loft area where multiple air mattresses (not provided) can comfortably be placed.

Jeff & Lana Wertz are the owners of the property. Jeff is a custom homebuilder from Atlanta, Ga and Lana is a nurse midwife also from Atlanta. We have 3 daughters who love to waterski, swim, and bike. We also have 2 dogs Mac & Paisley.
Our lake home is wonderful for kids and pets. Our girls like to have bonfires, take nature walks, pick wild blackberries and pears, do all the water sports and just do a lot of the things Lana and I did when we were kids that they don't do in Atlanta. Nights at the lake are my favorite, cooking dinner, sitting on the porch and taking a walk with the dogs under the stars!
For those with older guests or families the walk to the water is very gentle and short with no woods to meander through. Also, the main master bedroom is on the first floor so there is no need to climb up and down stairs to get to the bedroom.
Lana Wertz purchased this house in 2009
We chose to buy this property when we saw the land come on the market in 2008. This was the best lake lot we had ever seen (still is). We spent 6 months working on the plan and built our dream lake home on the property. We knew the area well and loved the convenience not only to the property but from the property to shopping, grocery stores, and to boat ramps (the nearest ramp is on our property!).
We love getting to the house the first night, unpacking and going to the front or back porch and just look at the view! We also like going to Lavonia which is 10 minutes away to get doughnuts on Saturday morning and walk through the small shops and antique stores. We also buy local produce at the farmer's market on the square.
Along with two other families with kids, we rented this lake home for several nights over New Years. The house is fantastic, offering plenty of room for six adults and five children ranging from 3 years old to 8 years old. The house offers tasteful decoration, great amenities, and everything was clean and reliable. We loved the great common area and open space connecting the dining area and kitchen. We all could relax together and have dinner or watch the game as a big group or the adults could play cards while the kids played upstairs. Throughout the process, Lana was helpful and quick to respond with any questions. This is a beautiful property located on a scenic view of the lake and would also be an amazing place to stay during the summer. The kids have room to run and play sports outside and the boat dock looked great even though it was too cold for us to venture out on the lake in December...We loved it!
We were a group of six. This was our first lake vacation and because we found this perfect rental home, it won't be our last. Prior to arriving at the rental, the owners were very responsive to our questions and made the dialogue easy. They provide great directions and instructions regarding the property and nearby towns and restaurants, to include places to access by boat. The upstairs AC acted up on the 2nd day we were there and the owners had someone there to fix it within the hour. Amazing response and service which was very much appreciated.
The home is just as described..an upscale lake home with a cozy lake feel. The house was open and spacious allowing us room to prepare meals, grill, or play cards at the kitchen table while still keeping an eye on the TV to watch the Olympics. The master bedroom made me feel like I was in a resort and the king size bed was soooo comfortable. The morning sunrise off of the porch overlooking the water is a must-see. Two refrigerators made it ideal to keep all our beverages cold in one fridge and the other for food. (Ingles nearby for all your grocery needs.) We opted to take our own boat with us and could easily keep it tied up to their dock. We spent time daily at "party island" (very near their home) which offers a beach area to hang out. Being the end of summer, there weren't but a couple of boats out there at a time so we made our own party. So so much fun!
We had great expectations to go hiking and tubing and trying out 211 Main St Cafe. We did research prior to our arrival (all nearby) but we couldn't pry ourselves away from the house. We did save a day for whitewater rafting down the Chattooga (Southeastern Expeditions). It was only like 45 min to 1 hour away from the lake house. Fun time. Four of us drove to Cherokee one night to try out Harrah's casino. Definitely don't waste your time on that trip. (Save your money for Las Vegas). We went to eat one night at Nami (an Asian Bistro) in Anderson at the Portman Marina. Now that is definitely worth the time and money. Delicious!
Lake Hartwell and the Wertz provided a fabulous and relaxing vacation. This was our first VRBO rental and I couldn't have been more impressed. Jeff and Lana have a beautiful home and are very generous to open it up to strangers. Next trip to Lake Hartwell...this is the place to stay. You will not regret it!
If you are looking for the perfect lake house rental - You just found it! We have rented for many years on Lake Hartwell and this home is so beautiful! The view is amazing! Quiet neighborhood and easy walk to the dock! You could not ask for more! Brand new home with We had a wonderful time! I have so much appreciation and respect for lovely home. I have finally found the perfect spot on the lake! You can enjoy the lake without all the boat traffic. I cannot wait to visit again! I highly recommend renting the boat! So nice to go for a relaxing boat ride every evening!
Family and I had an amazing time on the property. Best of all worlds - close to Atlanta (~90 miles), convenient access to highway 85, but still offered remarkably insulated down time for the family. We found the listing description to be spot-on: the home is well maintained, fit /finish/features are all in line with the price point. The 'million dollar view' claim is truly legit, we watched the sunrise over the water from the master bedroom each day. We found the owners responsive and willing to help ensure we had a comfortable stay. The drawbacks are too few and small to warrant mention. We're looking forward to staying here again in the future!
We spent a week in early March at "Camp Wertz" and it was wonderful. The four bedrooms matched our needs perfectly with the master suite on the first floor for us and the three bdrms up for our two sons' families. All of the bedrooms are very nice sizes---the 'kids room' with bunk beds has plenty of room and the adult bdrms provide two king & one queen and plenty of bathroom space for everyone. The lighting in the first floor master bathroom is subdued, so bring along a lighted mirror if you need more careful grooming.
The kitchen & great room have ample seating and eating area; as does the covered deck. The basement is unfinished but has a ping-pong table and plenty of run around room; plus there is a corn-hole set that we didn't use and I only saw some very small bean bags (not the usual size).
The house has its own dock, so there is direct access to the lake. The house is at the top of a cove that flows into the Tugaloo river channel, so it is fairly secluded. The two houses to the right are also very nice; the house to the left is much older & a bit run down. The properties in this area of the lake are what I call 'rural eclectic'--you can have $400k+ houses like this one next to older, fishing cottages and run-down trailers.
I think the house was built in 2008 and all the appliances are modern; the first floor is finished in a rustic/camp style (knotty pine floors; long dining table with bench seating) -- perfect for a vacation on the lake. The owners obviously take pride in their lake house and use it often, so it is much akin to staying at a friend's house and definitely not a semi-commercial, under maintained VRBO. Their directions and house instructions were specific and clear, and they responded promptly to the one question we had. The only short of perfect items are the worn couch & chairs in the great room, the dim lighting in the master bath, and relatively weak/slow wi-fi service (which is probably due to the service to the property more than the router in the first floor bdrm), but all of the other attributes of the house and property more than justify a five-star rating for a lake house where you are getting a whole lot for your rental dollar.
The location is about 15 mins from the city of Hartwell; which has a newer Ingles store with all the items you'd expect for a contemporary food store---deli, good selection in produce and all the other items you might buy at home. The IGA store in Lavonia is more limited.
This property is wonderful and I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who wants to spend some time on the lake. We were 3 families with 11 people in all and this was a perfect spot for the kids to play, both inside and out. The kids had their own bedroom upstairs and then a nice adjacent playroom for watching movies or playing board games. The downstairs is a beautifully decorated open floor plan with great views of the lake and a deck where we spent many a morning or evening. I can't say enough about how nice this house is.
The property is huge and provides a perfect open spot for the kids to run around outside and play games. We had zero issues with any pests (no ants, no mosquitos) during the day. We spent most days on the lake and it's just an ideal setting with very little boat traffic. We used the boat for 2 days and had a great time on the lake. Rates for renting the boat are better than what you'll get at the local marina and it's probably a better boat than what you'll get at the marina.
I'd recommend this house to anyone and we will be back.
