Great location, but a comedy of errors.

  • 2 of 5

I booked this place for 4 nights in mid-April 2018. First off, excellent location -- short walk to the Mall, short walk to Metro station (green line) to get around. Grocery store only a few blocks away. Nice neighborhood, easy to get around, fair number of restaurants a short walk (or train ride) away. Not super trendy area in the immediate area, which was fine by us, but the Wharf area is close by.

The owner was nice enough, and gave me directions to check in. But it was simply a comedy of errors from that time on.

1. At first, only supplied one bath towel. But we needed at least two, since there were two of us. Owner told us to look in closet, but it was only hand towels and wash cloths. No biggie, more towels delivered next day.

2. Batteries in remote for TV were dead. Scrounged and found some to use.

3. Power went out in the unit. But only in part of unit. Had to call owner and flip all the switches in two separate breaker boxes. Bring your flashlight, just in case! Glad I had one!

4. Needed the flashlight for another day when hot water heater was blinking red and beeping at us. Had to manually reset.

5. Told the owner we couldn't sign on to WiFi. He said to sign on under "Smithsonian House", which would be easy enough if we had known -- but in our instructions, he called the place the "Jefferson House". We still couldn't sign on with the password he gave over phone, until I told him that the password he gave us for check-in was different than the other one he was giving us. He said, "I should change that" -- yeah, that would be a great idea! We were there on a business trip mostly, so we had to go look elsewhere for WiFi until we got that fixed.

6. We asked about heat controls for the place. He told us controls were in living room -- there weren't any. When owner was told that, he then remembered we had baseboard heat in this unit. Bedroom one worked fine, but the living room heater was inoperable - never did get it to come on. Wasn't too much of an issue, but the front room was a bit chilly.

7. Random stuff just laying around, like a computer monitor on the bedroom dresser, large picture frame just up against living room wall.

Pretty clean unit all around, was fine by our standards. I think if the owner just got organized better, things might improve. Owner called/texted when I sent out messages, generally within hours or so. He apologized for these comedy of errors, but that was about it.

Great basement suite!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying in this basement suite.

It was clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. My wife loved it as well.

Whenever we had a concern Wavely answered our call and addressed things promptly. He also emailed us details on the Internet wifi and other items.

When we first arrived there wasn't any laundry detergent. We told him and he asked us not to get any, and there was detergent waiting outside our front door within 30 minutes. Great service!

The only concern was that our wifi was sloooow. Hopefully this will be better in the future.

Wonderful Place & Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

I loved my stay at The Jefferson Travel House. The neighborhood was wonderful, and the apartment was impeccably clean and decorated so nicely. I felt like I was in a fancy bed and breakfast. The owner/property manager, Waverly, was very responsive to all my needs, and I would definitely stay here again next time I am in DC.
