As you walk into the Kona Dolphin House you are greeted with a breathtaking view of Kealakekua Bay. This prime location gives one the feeling that the pristine ocean is part of the back yard yet is above the bustle of the public beach so is both quiet and private. The architecture of this Bali style open house is stunning with it's high ceiling and four twenty foot Ohea posts lending support and natural beauty. The entire face of the great room opens to one of the prettiest bays in the world.
Kealakekua Bay which is just two minutes away is an underwater marine park and some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. Spinner dolphins frequently visit this beautiful area. It is an amazing site to see them frolicking from the huge lanai and comfort of this lovely house. In the winter it is common to see the humpback whales breaching, spouting or flapping their tails.
Every day swimming in these crystal clear waters is an adventure as you never know which of our marine friends will show up to play; dolphins, turtles, manta and spotted rays, octopus and more! It is an easy swim out to be with them or you can kayak or try stand up paddle board.
This house is surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, designed by an award winning landscaper. The visual feast includes a continuous variety of colorful, fragrant flowers. The Hawaiian fruiting trees waiting for you to sample include bananas, papaya, mango, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, lemons, limes, star fruit and more.
The sunsets from the lanai are outstanding. Every evening is a gift of color. You will wake up in the morning to the symphonic song of the birds and go to sleep at night to the melodic sounds of the ocean.
Every room has an ocean view. All rooms come equipped with natural air conditioning courtesy of ocean breezes and a ceiling fan. This house has four large bedrooms, each accommodating one to two guests. A master suite, with a king size bed and private bath. Two ground level bedrooms that share a western style bathroom with granite vanity and a large double shower. The upstairs bedroom has its own half bath. All bedrooms have sliding glass doors with an ocean view.
Access to a well-equipped kitchen - toaster, blender, coffee maker, full size fridge, five burner gas stove, gas barbecue, dishwasher ~everything you need for cooking in paradise. Access to wireless internet, cable TV, iPod/mp3 compatible stereo in the main room, washer/dryer.
A close drive to local restaurants, fine dining, grocery market, weekend Green Farmers Market, shops and galleries. Kailua-Kona is less then twenty miles away. It is four miles to Pu`uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and one mile to Ke'ei Beach. It is an easy (one road) drive to Volcano National Park, one of the few active volcanoes in the world. The ‘King’s Trail’ and other hikes are a short drive away with easy access. It is four miles to Paleaku Peace Gardens where guests can take yoga classes or we have mats available for yoga on the lanai with the view. It is ten miles to Ho’okena Beach. Mamalohoa Hot Tubs and Massage are about a ten minute drive away, or we can arrange a massage therapist visit you in-home.
The house has games like scrabble and various board games, cards and puzzles.
The GPS on your phone will not have correct directions to this rental property; even though my address is 82 5988A Napoopoo Rd. the house is located on a private drive off of Napoopoo Rd. I will email you correct directions.
The first time I visited Kealakekua Bay and swam with the playful spinner dolphins, witnessed the abundant fragrant flowers and tasted the various assortments of fruit. I knew I wanted to live here. Hawaii is truly paradise. Once while basking in Kealakekua Bay's crystal clear water I looked up at this property and it glowed in the sunshine as if calling out to me. I was lucky enough to purchase it and build a lovely Bali style house. Now I can share this wonderful Hawaiian dolphin experience and breathtaking view with you.
Swarn Khalsa purchased this house in 2003
Where else can you sit on a huge comfortable lanai watching spinner dolphins frolic as the ocean sparkles in the sunshine, witness some of the worlds prettiest sunsets and in the evenings a star studded sky. The view from this house looks upon one of the most beautiful bays in Hawaii yet is high enough that it lends to privacy. The tropical gardens that surround the house include a continuous assortment of fragrant flowers and and generous fruit trees . The sunsets are outstanding. The gardens are magnificent. The kitchen is large and well stocked. Everything you need for a proper fun holiday.
I fell in love with this property because of the panoramic view and closeness of Kealakekua Bay. This marine cove is just two minutes away, yet the elevation of the house is high enough that it is quiet and private. Swimming in these pristine waters has made me a strong healthy swimmer plus given me hours and hours of entertainment. I've swam with spotted eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, whales and an endless supply of colorful fish. The city of refugee is just three miles away where the beautiful people of the island share their Hawaiian story, songs and hula with joy.
We stayed in this amazing house for a week in October Every room opens to a view of the bay, tropical plants are everywhere and the sounds of the island birds make you feel like you are in a travel video. After a few days I had forgotten all about the world back home. The snorkeling in the bay is incredible with rich coral reefs and colorful fish just a few feet from the beach. The highlight of our trip was swimming with the spinner dolphins which often come into the bay in the mornings around 8:00 am. You can see the dolphins jumping right from the deck and grab your snorkels and go. Magical is all I can say here is a video of one of those swims shot on my GoPro https://www.youtube.com/watch?vnOyaXHrHlo
I stayed at this place with group of 10 people.
The owner responded each of my questions in a timely manner before our arrival.
Andy gave us a welcome tour late at night (because of the delay of our schedule) and we knew this would be a stay we would enjoy a lot. The outdoor shower is a WOW!
So next day we abandoned our plan to visit Waipio Valley and stayed in the house, spent time talking, playing casual games, and looking at the beautiful scenery. We stayed in 5 different houses during our trip to Hawaii, and this is the most impressive one.
The only complain is, this place is a little hard to find at late night, and there is no AT&T signals so no phone call if you got lost (Verizon and TMobile are OK).
I highly recommend this place,
I picked this property for one reason specifically, because the views of Kealakekua bay looked so impressive
in the photos, and the photos did not do it justice! Dolphin Spirit House has just the right elevation, not too far from the ocean, but high enough to offer the panoramic views of the ocean and breaking surf, as well as the entire area of Captain Cook and the coastline to the south. The lanai is huge and open, with just a 1 foot high lava wall at the edge of the grass area, with the tropical vegetation dropping off below, offering an unobstructed view, whether standing or lounging. I loved the huge grounds of the estate, with tropical landscaping all around, from the private driveway to the top of the property and the privacy of almost having the hillside all to yourself!
The main common area house is very impressive, with the natural tree trunk wood columns supporting what I would guess to be about a 20 foot ceiling in the center, with plank and beam architectural design, which makes the central gathering area seem so open and spacious. The granite kitchen was fully functional and open to the living and dining area, with a very nice island gas stove cooking area. The master bedroom was in a separate wing from the other three bedrooms, offering complete privacy and the same panoramic coastal view as the main lanai, what a view to wake up to in the morning! And the outdoor showers kind of bring you back to nature, totally private and with good hot water to make it comfortable, even on a chilly early morning!
The caretaker Marlien was such a warm and welcoming person. Even with the caretakers living on the property, down the hill in a guest house, they were far enough away to have the house seem totally private, but responsive if needed. I had a problem with the main house TV and Marlien took care of it like a champion! She is now the technical expert of the estate, lol! I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, private, tropical and scenic getaway on the Big Island!
I stayed in this house with a group of women. We were all doing a week long retreat and going on some dolphin swims and adventures to other parts of the island. It was such a perfect place for all of us to have our own rooms and private time as well as enjoy meals and time together. The lanai is huge and really nice for yoga practice. The master suite is in a private wing and was the perfect, restful healing retreat for me...complete with wonderful outdoor tub and private shower. The kitchen is very well equipped with all clad cookware and a propane stove. The view is amazing! If you get up in the morning you can see if the dolphins are in the bay it takes about two minutes to drive down to the water and jump in to swim with them. Very peaceful quiet location, solar house, and an elegant home. I would love to stay here again!
Our family of 5 had the pleasure of staying at this home over the holidays. We enjoyed the fantastic view of the bay (some whale action), great landscaping, fresh fruit from the orchard, and spacious open floor plan. The kitchen had everything needed for cooking at home. All enjoyed the great open air showers. The location is very private and quiet. Sunsets (and meals) on the comfortable lanai were great (as was occasional visits from Bob the cat). Looking forward to a return visit.
