About the property

As you walk into the Kona Dolphin House you are greeted with a breathtaking view of Kealakekua Bay. This prime location gives one the feeling that the pristine ocean is part of the back yard yet is above the bustle of the public beach so is both quiet and private. The architecture of this Bali style open house is stunning with it's high ceiling and four twenty foot Ohea posts lending support and natural beauty. The entire face of the great room opens to one of the prettiest bays in the world.

Kealakekua Bay which is just two minutes away is an underwater marine park and some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. Spinner dolphins frequently visit this beautiful area. It is an amazing site to see them frolicking from the huge lanai and comfort of this lovely house. In the winter it is common to see the humpback whales breaching, spouting or flapping their tails.

Every day swimming in these crystal clear waters is an adventure as you never know which of our marine friends will show up to play; dolphins, turtles, manta and spotted rays, octopus and more! It is an easy swim out to be with them or you can kayak or try stand up paddle board.

This house is surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, designed by an award winning landscaper. The visual feast includes a continuous variety of colorful, fragrant flowers. The Hawaiian fruiting trees waiting for you to sample include bananas, papaya, mango, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, lemons, limes, star fruit and more.

The sunsets from the lanai are outstanding. Every evening is a gift of color. You will wake up in the morning to the symphonic song of the birds and go to sleep at night to the melodic sounds of the ocean.

Every room has an ocean view. All rooms come equipped with natural air conditioning courtesy of ocean breezes and a ceiling fan. This house has four large bedrooms, each accommodating one to two guests. A master suite, with a king size bed and private bath. Two ground level bedrooms that share a western style bathroom with granite vanity and a large double shower. The upstairs bedroom has its own half bath. All bedrooms have sliding glass doors with an ocean view.

Access to a well-equipped kitchen - toaster, blender, coffee maker, full size fridge, five burner gas stove, gas barbecue, dishwasher ~everything you need for cooking in paradise. Access to wireless internet, cable TV, iPod/mp3 compatible stereo in the main room, washer/dryer.

A close drive to local restaurants, fine dining, grocery market, weekend Green Farmers Market, shops and galleries. Kailua-Kona is less then twenty miles away. It is four miles to Pu`uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and one mile to Ke'ei Beach. It is an easy (one road) drive to Volcano National Park, one of the few active volcanoes in the world. The ‘King’s Trail’ and other hikes are a short drive away with easy access. It is four miles to Paleaku Peace Gardens where guests can take yoga classes or we have mats available for yoga on the lanai with the view. It is ten miles to Ho’okena Beach. Mamalohoa Hot Tubs and Massage are about a ten minute drive away, or we can arrange a massage therapist visit you in-home.

The house has games like scrabble and various board games, cards and puzzles.

The GPS on your phone will not have correct directions to this rental property; even though my address is 82 5988A Napoopoo Rd. the house is located on a private drive off of Napoopoo Rd. I will email you correct directions.

About Swarn Khalsa

The first time I visited Kealakekua Bay and swam with the playful spinner dolphins, witnessed the abundant fragrant flowers and tasted the various assortments of fruit. I knew I wanted to live here. Hawaii is truly paradise. Once while basking in Kealakekua Bay's crystal clear water I looked up at this property and it glowed in the sunshine as if calling out to me. I was lucky enough to purchase it and build a lovely Bali style house. Now I can share this wonderful Hawaiian dolphin experience and breathtaking view with you.

Swarn Khalsa purchased this house in 2003

Why Swarn Khalsa chose Captain Cook

Where else can you sit on a huge comfortable lanai watching spinner dolphins frolic as the ocean sparkles in the sunshine, witness some of the worlds prettiest sunsets and in the evenings a star studded sky. The view from this house looks upon one of the most beautiful bays in Hawaii yet is high enough that it lends to privacy. The tropical gardens that surround the house include a continuous assortment of fragrant flowers and and generous fruit trees . The sunsets are outstanding. The gardens are magnificent. The kitchen is large and well stocked. Everything you need for a proper fun holiday.

What makes this house unique

I fell in love with this property because of the panoramic view and closeness of Kealakekua Bay. This marine cove is just two minutes away, yet the elevation of the house is high enough that it is quiet and private. Swimming in these pristine waters has made me a strong healthy swimmer plus given me hours and hours of entertainment. I've swam with spotted eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, whales and an endless supply of colorful fish. The city of refugee is just three miles away where the beautiful people of the island share their Hawaiian story, songs and hula with joy.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed in this amazing house for a week in October Every room opens to a view of the bay, tropical plants are everywhere and the sounds of the island birds make you feel like you are in a travel video. After a few days I had forgotten all about the world back home. The snorkeling in the bay is incredible with rich coral reefs and colorful fish just a few feet from the beach. The highlight of our trip was swimming with the spinner dolphins which often come into the bay in the mornings around 8:00 am. You can see the dolphins jumping right from the deck and grab your snorkels and go. Magical is all I can say here is a video of one of those swims shot on my GoPro

Paradise on Kealakekua Bay

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully open great room with an awesome view of the bay. A great escape from the sterile condo resort properties. Very well stocked kitchen with everything you need. All 4 bedrooms very nice and clean. Great location to see the west and south island sites. Marlien and Swarni were there to answer our questions about the best way to plan activities and see the sites - from kayaking/snorkeling to hiking to the lava. Thank you so much for the hospitality - this place truly is paradise.

Gorgeous! Relaxing! Great location!

  • 5 of 5

Our crew of nine (4 adults and 5 kids) had a remarkable time here. The house was exactly what we were hoping for, and we had plenty of space for all of us to have some privacy. Breathtaking views and a gorgeous garden provided us with the vacation of our dreams. One of my favorite parts was having all of us dine around the massive dining room table. It’s hard to find a table big enough to comfortably seat all of us, but we could here. It was truly special. Marien was beyond helpful and even greeted us with some homemade banana bread. We liked the location as well, out of the hustle and bustle. On our first morning, we kayaked with the dolphins in the bay below. We were so close to them, we could hear them breathe. Wow! Thank you for sharing your lovely home!

Absolutely the best! Amazing, secluded setting with sunset views with nightlong surf lullaby

  • 5 of 5

Awesome setting and view!! Home was well stocked with incredible amenities.

Swarni was an wonderful hostess. We arrived to homemade banana bread and fresh Kona coffee for the next morning.

The home was as beautiful as the view over Kaelakekua Bay. Plenty of space to relax and take in the sunset at night and yoga in the mornings!

Thank you, Swarni!!

Exceeded expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a lovely week in February 2018. Our hosts were lovely, helpful and had great information for where to go and what to do. Our extended family of 8, aged from 90 years old to15 enjoyed this house. We could easily cook and eat and gather as a family either indoors or outdoors. Although the design of the main house is very open and welcoming there were plenty of private spaces too. There was something special for each of us, from the yard and garden areas, to the outdoor showers, to the indoor and outdoor seating areas and many places for taking in the spectacular view. The location is remote enough to be very peaceful and full of birds and plants, but close enough to Kona city or Captain Cook to be convenient. The location is also a quick drive to Two Step for coral snorkeling, to the bay for hiking, kayaking and more snorkeling and many interesting sites and views for the more sedentary. We had to choose a house carefully due to the spread in age and walking abilities in our group. The house has an upstairs bedroom with a powder room on the same level, two smaller bedrooms on the ground level with a toilet and showers nearby and a semi -detached master suite with toilet and showers. When we arrived there was also a large day bed in the main living area which was great for the kids. This house was a comfortable place to spend time when it was raining and when the sun was shining.

Amazingly beautiful!!!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This home is breathtakingly beautiful! The views are even prettier than the pictures. Every room has this view. The approx. 30 ft. long sliding glass doors slide directly into the wall so you have a unobstructed view of the bay. Truly awesome! The kitchen has everything you need to cook except a microwave. Even a grill outside for a cookout. There is a dining table for 8 and a few bar stools inside. We loved sitting on the 2 patios and relaxing. There is a picnic table there. We brought an Eno and hung it up between the wooden pillars. The den has a tv and one of the 3 sofas/loveseats looks like a large wooden framed comfy bed. Big enough for 2 to sleep there. The master bedroom has its own bathroom attached to it. The shower and tub is outside. We loved those! Bathing was so relaxing while looking at such a beautiful view of the bay. The master suite also has its own patio. The other 3 bedrooms are on the other end of the house. Two of them side by side downstairs, both with a complete full view of the bay. There is a full bathroom to share. It also has an outdoor shower. The 4th bedroom is upstairs by itself. It gave some nice privacy for my newly married daughter and her husband. It has a half bath and its own private patio with the same amazing view. There is a washer and dryer for your use. Outside we loved the fruit trees that you can pick fruit off of and eat! That was a treat! The house is a solar house, so it is cooled by the nice breeze. We were very comfortable temperature wise. There are also kayaks for your personal use on the bay just a couple of minutes drive down the hill. We saw humpback whales from our balcony a couple of times. I could not give enough thanks to our hostess. What a sweetheart! She lives on the property (in a separate home just down the hill), welcomed us the first day we arrived and is available for any questions or needs, but gave us complete privacy. There are tour books available for your use to help you find your way around activities. We had 7 people staying in the home. Parents, 4 grown children and a son in law. From the airport, it was about a 25 minute drive. A beautiful drive, but follow the speed limit because it has some curves. There are several restaurants and small markets within 5-10 minutes of the home. The home is beautiful! The view is amazing! We travel a lot and this home and hostess totally exceeded all of our expectations! I would love to stay here again SOON!

Absolutely incredible views

  • 5 of 5

We came to The Big Island for a family Christmas. This house was perfect in every way, incredible views, very close to some of the best snorkeling and the chance to swim with dolphins, and the sunsets were to die for. The outdoor showers and bathtubs were a wonderful surprise and so relaxing. The kitchen was really well equipped and we were as close as we wanted to be to towns and neighbors. Thank you for sharing your home and making our Christmas vacation so enjoyable.
