Kona Coast House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 1.75 Bathrooms, Other (See Description), Sleeps 6

This is a beautiful, very private home copied from a Frank Lloyd Wright design and modified to provide convenience and openness. A terra cotta cinderblock garden wall, matching the house walls, provides privacy on the mountain side, forming a large courtyard and bringing out the beauty of our bougainvillea and other tropical flowers and gardens. The other side of the house and gardens are fenced for pets, including large or small dogs. Relax on our covered lanai with a drink and your loved ones and watch the Kona sunsets over the ocean.

Enjoy the fishing boat activities on the sea below. Look up the coast at the beautiful Kealakekua Bay. Watch the saffron finches and tropical Java sparrows at the bird feeders and listen to the sounds of the Hawaiian doves. Enjoy our 3 bedrooms, carpeted, with 2 king size beds and one double bed, each equipped with dressers and closets. Each bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto pool deck.

Additional Details: The large living room has sliding glass doors on both sides to allow the breezes through. The house retains a perfect temperature all day, no fans or air conditioning needed, but on an exceptionally hot day there are ceiling fans in every room. During the cooler evenings we sometimes close the sliding doors on the mountain side. From the bedrooms or the living room you can listen to the garden fountain and watch the birds take baths. There are 55 Macademia nut trees on the 3 acres which is a small, older lava flow. We also have mango trees and citrus. A nut cracker is provided on one of the lanai tables.

More Information: The large table seats six and we eat dinner out there in the sunsets. Our pool is long enough for lap swimming, but wide enough for kids to play in. It is heated with a solar heating system. You can walk out of the house and jump right into the pool. Bathing suits are optional because there is a privacy wall from the neighbors who are far enough away that they couldn't see what you have on anyway.

When you finish your swim, relax in our large, blue hot tub which seats seven, with two jet settings and a little waterfall. You can experiment with the different color lights in the evenings. There is a red cement lanai all the way around the house, providing lots of room for your Scuba and snorkeling gear or pool toys.

Dave and Sally are newly retired teachers. We have taught in the Bay Area in California in a two room school, on Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada, and here in Kona for the last 14 years. We also ran a group home for troubled teens in Victoria for six years. Dave runs a special program at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona for teen age kids who have trouble with the larger campus, and Sally taught at the Elementary level at a private preparatory school in Kona, both in the classroom and PE and Music. We will be dividing our time between our home in Canada and our home here in Hawaii. We hope you enjoy our place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent 10 glorious days at your property and were thrilled with the house and the location. The house had everything we needed and the view was spectacular. We were surprised to find what turned out to be arguably the best snorkeling/diving/swimming with dolphins spot on the Big Island just a few minutes down the road (Honaunau Bay). We loved hanging out by the pool on the lanai watching the sun set in the evenings and in the morning eating papaya from the fruit stand down the road. We had a truly restorative vacation and hope to return soon. Many thanks!!!

Lovely Peaceful spot

  • 5 of 5

We all loved our stay here. Lots of space, very open and airy, quiet, lovely home away from home. Furnishings were very modest but more than adequately met our every need. It's a remote but great location to leave behind the hassle of crowded Kona and enjoy the Captain Cook area of the Big Island. We snorkeled at our favorite spot 'Two step' daily. Even when we went to 69's and Hapuna beach up north the drive was fine and coming home to this oasis was wonderful. The birds, geckos and fruit trees were adored by all especially our grandson Elijah.

Sally was always on hand to respond to our questions.

Thank you!

We will be back!

Amazing View

  • 4 of 5

Although the weather did not want to cooperate, the views we were able to enjoy were simply spectacular. The pool was fabulous. We swam at least once every day - an absolutely perfect way to wake up. Who needs a steaming cup of delicious Kona Coffee when you can jump into that amazing pool?? Although, we certainly weren't going to pass on the fresh mangos each morning - delicious!! The fresh macadamia nuts on the patio where the perfect snack to end each day. The fact that there are views from EVERY room was another highlight, and the location is terrific. Since I'm a big baby when it comes to geckos, bugs, and the like, I'll end my review here, with all the good stuff!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the good review-just a note about the geckos and bugs- we are in the tropics. We love the geckos because they eat the bugs and are beautiful- but we do have the house treated every 3 months by Terminix and there are screens on all the doors. Aloha, Sally

Dream holiday

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Sally & Dave's home. It was fantastic to have a private swimming pool and hot tub to use at our leisure and this was the deciding factor for us when we made the booking. Although it is a family home and not an all-year holiday rental, we found there was lots of space for us and our belongings and we are grateful to Sally and Dave for making their home available to 'vacationers' like ourselves.

We travelled a long way to reach Hawaii so we were out and about exploring a lot; there is so much to offer on the island and we had a lot of miles on the clock when we returned our rental car. The house was a great place to retreat and relax at the end of a busy day and swimming at night is not as cold as you might expect!

A few recommendations we would make to other people visiting include the South Kona fruit stand and Da Poke Shack for breakfast. For activities, our highlights were: a wonderful sunset flight around the island with Big Island Air; visiting Mauna Kea summit with Mauna Kea tours and going to the volcano park and the crater at night. We would have liked to have explored some more of the trails at the volcano park but we ran out of time. The Place of Refuge - Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau - is very near the house and is stunningly beautiful; I would recommend a visit. Seeing turtles was also a highlight!

Overall, we've had a holiday of a lifetime. Mahalo to Sally & Dave for helping us to make it happen!

Nice Hawaiian home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Dave and Sally's home. The view from the lanai is amazing! It has a180 degree view of the ocean. The pool was a treat. My boys (11 and 7) had a lot of fun swimming. The house is set up with many sliding doors that allow for breezes to blow threw the house keeping you nice and cool. The three bedrooms all open up to the pool area. You can lay in bed and stare out at the ocean. It was amazing to wake up each morning and see such a wonderful site!

I love all the nature at the house. The flowers were all so beautiful and there were many differenent birds to see. We took a lot of pictures. We even saw a herd of wild goats in the lava flow next to the house on our last morning That was pretty neat to see.

There is a mango tree in the front side yard that treated us to many fresh mangos. It was so wonderful having fresh mango every morning for breakfast. Dave and Sally also left us a bunch of macademia nuts to enjoy!

This house gives its guests a great feel of what it feels like to live has a Hawaiian. There were no resort crowds or noises. Dave and Sally are also very generous providing soap, paper products (toliet paper and paper towels), towels and linens. (I have rented several places that do not provide these things).

I recommend staying at Dave and Sally's house!

Oasis in paradise

  • 5 of 5

Dave and Sally's home is an oasis in tropical paradise. The 3 bedrooms have large patio doors that let in cooling breezes, and lead out to the pool and hot tub, and lanai. These areas all look out to the Pacific Ocean. The view is 180 degrees, unobstructed. No other houses can be seen when you are on the lanai! Fantastic sunsets! While enjoying meals on the lanai, enjoy the view, the tropical birds, and the lush vegetation. The house is designed with natural air conditioning, with patio doors on both sides, to allow air flow. The back lanai has a fountain that the birds like, too. The kitchen is well stocked, the linens nice, and beds comfie.

The house is well located for exploring Hawaii, and quite close to some really good snorkeling areas.

This is our fourth Hawaiian island to visit, and the most diverse. From the observatories on Mauna Kea to the lava fields of Kileaua, the surfers to the coffee farms, the charm of Hawi and Hilo to the action at Kailua, great golfing options and beautiful botanical gardens, zip lines and boat cruises.....the Big Island has it all!

We are south of Honaunau, off the main highway, with a 180 degree view of the ocean and up the coastline to Kealakekua Bay and Kailua Kona. It is very quiet and private, in the country near cattle ranches and Honaunau Bay, which is the best dive and snorkel site in Hawaii, and also near the National Historical Park. We are 15 minutes from Captain Cook, where there is a shopping center, and 35 minutes from Keauhou and Kailua Kona. Our place is an oasis on a small lava flow, but landscaped so you don't see lava from the lanais. We are one and a half hours to Volcanoes National Park. There are plenty of nearby activities: snorkeling, swimming, Hookena Beach Park, scuba, kayaking, hang gliding, antiquing, coffee farms, madademia nut farms. We have 55 macademia nut trees, 4 mango trees, citrus trees. Eat your fill. Watch the birds at the feeder and the boats on the ocean. Enjoy a drink on the lanai and watch the Kona sunsets.

Other Activities: shopping, kayaking, parasailing, miniature golf, boating, wildlife viewing, basketball court
