The Knollette--Tucked away in the woods on a quiet, private lane, this fully equipped cottage with grassy yard is a short walk to a unique water and mountain view and low-tide play area, as well as to the center of Southwest Harbor in the heart of the Quietside of Mount Desert Island. (Google marks the house closer to the water on our lane than it is.) In town, there is shopping, dining and access to the Island Explorer, the free shuttle to all parts of MDI and Acadia National Park. The Park provides opportunities to hike, bike the carriage roads, canoe or kayak or walk the scenic ocean-side walks. There are also opportunities to rent boats to play on the beautiful waters of the Great Harbor or to golf, antique hunt, eat seafood and explore the surrounding islands.

About The Owner

Our family has been enjoying MDI since we were little in the mid-1900s. We live on the property nearby and are here to provide assistance. We are 3 brothers, two with wives, who act, golf, play tennis, hike and sail among other things while we are able to be here, sometimes together.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1975

Why The Owner chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Our family, 'twas our grandparents, began visiting MDI in 1900 and we cannot imagine vacationing elsewhere.

What makes this cottage unique

At the base of Causeway lane is the causeway and its bridge. At near high tide, many adventuresome folks love to jump off the bridge and body surf under the bridge. At low tide it is time for shells.

Then, at the cottage, we also love watching the deer wander the property.

Charming cottage in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth time on MDI and our favorite location so far. The cottage is tucked away on a private road that has access to the water where you can watch sunsets, my son loved exploring and casting for small fish. The cottage is in a wooded area so it feels secluded and has a lovely view of wild flowers and lavender. The walk to town is short and enjoyable. The Cranberry Cove Ferry is also within walking distance, we ventured out there with bikes and it was a lovely time. Southwest Harbor has several great restaurants, a specialty market, shopping and a bike shop. The vibe is more low key than Bar Harbor with the same access to all that Acadia has to offer (the larger town is only about 20 minutes so if you wanted to experience it is easy to do.) Flying Mountain Trail is close and scenic offering a view of the fjord Somes Sound. We fully enjoyed exploring new places and coming back to the cottage it had everything we needed, cozy beds, a kitchen that everything you need to prepare meals and even bake :) Thank you for such a wonderful stay we loved the quiet side!

Tranquil Haven

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at The Knollette in June 2017. We loved the proximity to southwest harbor and the privacy the cabin afforded. We highly recommend the causeway (a short 5 minute walk from the cabin), where we found sea glass, shells, crabs and even a pink starfish. We hiked the trails around Jordan Pond (which we loved!) and Wonderland Trail - just to name a few. The cabin is about 45 minutes from Ellsworth for some good food (try Finn's Irish Pub), antique and book shopping. The cabin itself was truly a "tranquil haven" and an ideal home base. We watched deer in the backyard over breakfast and admired the field of wild lupines close by. The cabin had everything we needed (washer/dryer, hairdryer, baking/cooking supplies, bug spray, etc.) and the owner was VERY responsive and welcoming. Our visit was our second one to Acadia and each time we fall more and more in love with its adventure, serenity and natural beauty!!! We miss it already and cannot wait to return!

Refuge in the Pines

  • 5 of 5

Hardwood floors, lots of windows with a secluded feel make this a nice little getaway for two to four people. The cottage is fully stocked. Most of what you need is within walking distance. The owners provide a very detailed book of suggestions of things to do and places to visit as well as information about local services. The bike shop on Main St. was able to solve my bike's shifting problem in ten minutes for a minimal fee. Some of the best hikes on Acadia are on this, the "quietside" of the island. Make sure to climb Beech Cliffs Mtn. beginning at the ladders end of the trail, then cross over to the parking lot to catch the northwestern trail to the fire tower. The views are spectacular. Acadia Mtn. trail features ocean breezes at the summit with a long view to the south along Somes Sound of both Northwest and Southwest Harbors. We hope to return to this little gem in the pines.

Wonderful Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the Cozy cottage for our honeymoon in Sept. 2016. The cabin was wonderful and had everything we needed. From the start we had great communication with the owner. The cabin sits near the larger, master house, but is secluded. We felt like we were surrounded by woods while still being a short walk from town. The large yard behind the cabin was great for laying on a blanket and reading. The cabin was very clean. The owner left notes on how to handle trash, recycling, etc. The washer and dryer worked well.

We loved staying on the Quiet side of the island. There are great hikes nearby- Acadia Mt was our favorite. Southwest Harbor has some nice restaurants. We drove to the lighthouse one night and ate at Thurston's. The cottage in the woods was just was we were looking for!

Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (our two daughters ages 11 and 13, my husband and me) spent a week here in June 2016 - the Knollette and Mount Desert Island are HEAVEN! This cottage was perfect for us. Wonderful space for our breakfasts and dinners, complete with charcoal grill and firepit in the backyard. Very private but with easy access to everything. We loved morning walks to the causeway down the street, went in to some part of Acadia Park every day, and the cottage is a pretty short walk to downtown Southwest Harbor and about a 20-minute drive to Bar Harbor. The Knollette has everything we needed for our week - washer/dryer, card-playing space, big windows of the yard and surrounding woods to see the deer, coffeemaker and great beds. In Acadia we recommend hiking Gorham and Champlain Mountains, spending plenty of time atop Cadillac, Jordan Pond Trail and biking the carriage roads. Eat lots of ice cream at the Quietside Cafe and MDI Ice Cream. The Knollette made our trip a total hit because of it's amenities, peace and location. The owner is very responsive and was VERY accommodating; we even got to meet him during our stay. We will be back! Hoping for TWO weeks next time!

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week at the Knollette and it was absolutely perfect. The house itself is very well-appointed - comfortable, attractive, cozy, with everything we needed. It was a great place to come home to after canoeing, hiking, and eating lobster (LOTS of lobster). The size and space were perfect for the two of us and all our gear (including bike and canoe). And the location is spot on. The house itself, located in a wooded section of a dead-end road near the causeway, feels very private, but it is within easy walking distance of Beal's Lobster Pier (did I mention lobster?) as well as the great restaurants in Southwest Harbor. It was close to all the places we wanted to hike and paddle, and the ability to walk to town for dinner and ice cream made every evening so relaxing. Really, the perfect vacation rental.
