Overview

Southwest Harbor Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The Knollette--Tucked away in the woods on a quiet, private lane, this fully equipped cottage with grassy yard is a short walk to a unique water and mountain view and low-tide play area, as well as to the center of Southwest Harbor in the heart of the Quietside of Mount Desert Island. (Google marks the house closer to the water on our lane than it is.) In town, there is shopping, dining and access to the Island Explorer, the free shuttle to all parts of MDI and Acadia National Park. The Park provides opportunities to hike, bike the carriage roads, canoe or kayak or walk the scenic ocean-side walks. There are also opportunities to rent boats to play on the beautiful waters of the Great Harbor or to golf, antique hunt, eat seafood and explore the surrounding islands.

About The Owner

Our family has been enjoying MDI since we were little in the mid-1900s. We live on the property nearby and are here to provide assistance. We are 3 brothers, two with wives, who act, golf, play tennis, hike and sail among other things while we are able to be here, sometimes together.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1975

Why The Owner chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Our family, 'twas our grandparents, began visiting MDI in 1900 and we cannot imagine vacationing elsewhere.

What makes this cottage unique

At the base of Causeway lane is the causeway and its bridge. At near high tide, many adventuresome folks love to jump off the bridge and body surf under the bridge. At low tide it is time for shells.

Then, at the cottage, we also love watching the deer wander the property.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week at the Knollette and it was absolutely perfect. The house itself is very well-appointed - comfortable, attractive, cozy, with everything we needed. It was a great place to come home to after canoeing, hiking, and eating lobster (LOTS of lobster). The size and space were perfect for the two of us and all our gear (including bike and canoe). And the location is spot on. The house itself, located in a wooded section of a dead-end road near the causeway, feels very private, but it is within easy walking distance of Beal's Lobster Pier (did I mention lobster?) as well as the great restaurants in Southwest Harbor. It was close to all the places we wanted to hike and paddle, and the ability to walk to town for dinner and ice cream made every evening so relaxing. Really, the perfect vacation rental.

The Quietside

  • 5 of 5

My sweetie and I booked the Knollette for 3 weeks. It was our first trip to Maine and we couldn't have chosen (guessed) better. A minute in the cabin melts the stress from the brain and body. The big open private views of the woods and yard are superb for quiet contemplation, reconnecting and reading. The cabin offers everything we needed (except a needle and thread, although I am pretty certain it was there somewhere) with a great location to the town bakery, library, shops, etc. (an easy walk). I must say that I could not imagine staying at Knollette without having a vehicle - unless you are adept at riding the village bus (we did not try it). The cabin was perfect for the 2 of us. We really loved it. The owners were helpful and very easy to work with. If we plan another trip to the area, we will definitely see if The Knollette is available first.

Great place! Beautiful community!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage. Cozy is a perfect description. We enjoyed seeing a deer walk through the backyard on a couple of evenings as he made his way to the field next door to eat in a field of flowers. This cottage is in a quiet quaint community that we loved. We enjoyed walking down the lane to the causeway to see the water and the boats out in the cove. Acadia is such a beautiful place to visit. Our 18 year old son took us on many hiking adventures that led to beautiful views of the Acadia seashore. I hope we get to return to this area in the future and if we do we will definitely want to stay here again. The owner was very nice and helpful and we would not hesitate to rent from him again.

What a Wonderful, Comfortable Place

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is in such a beautiful setting you almost hate to leave. And when you do you don't have to go very far. The causeway at the end of the semi-private lane lured us down there morning and evening every day to watch the tide flow in and out of Norwood Cove. The heart of Southwest Harbor with its restaurants and shops is an easy walk away. Beautiful Bass Harbor is just down the road.

As mentioned earlier, the house has everything you need from cooking gear to spices to laundry detergent and paper goods. It has good Wi-Fi and cable TV. It has nice towels and sheets and very good beds. The owner's book was full of great suggestions, and we took advantage of their ideas almost every day.

The Knollette is not a fancy place, but it is a very accommodating place. We loved it from the moment we first saw it. The four of us Acadia first-timers agree that Southwest Harbor and the Knollette is the place to be on Mount Desert. We will be back.

Exactly as advertised

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place, complete with many of the essentials you want but wouldn't think to bring or buy (cooking utensils and spices, laundry detergent, board games, playing cards, etc.). The suggestions were all excellent and it was nice to be away from the hubbub of Bar Harbor. We were very close to the delightful rocky water area pictured and a reasonable bike ride from the Seawall (a great picnic/book-reading spot). I wish we had come during the peak months, since some things in Southwest Harbor were closed and there was a bit of construction, but otherwise I have no regrets.

Perfect place to explore Mount Desert Island

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Knollette for a short break whilst in the USA, it was everything that we hoped it would be comfortable and clean with everything that we needed for our stay there. Knollette was a perfect base for us to explore the island from. Ken was extremely helpful in answering questions and sorting out an easy way to be paid from the UK, he was also really helpful in advising us due to the government shutdown.

I would highly recommend the cottage and if it wasn't so far would love to return to it. We enjoyed cycling and walking in Acadia and also went whale watching from Bar Harbour.
