About the property

Quiet, Comfy But Roomy Apartment For A Couple (Or Two) Or Small Family

[Please note: This apartment sits above our HomeAway listing #3645846 (which has been in operation since November 2013) and across the hall from our listing #3751630 (in operation since April 2014). Please check our reviews to help you decide. We want to make sure you enjoy your time in our home and in our city!]

Ideally located in North Center/Lincoln Square, our apartment is convenient to all the vibrant neighborhoods, events, and sights that Chicago has to offer. But it also provides you with the quiet and comfort you may want, to be able to relax at the end of the you can plan and energize for the next!

Our place is a short stroll away from the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music where you can catch jazz, flamenco, samba, salsa, Cajun, reggae, African and other world music on any given night. Award-winning Half-Acre Brewery is just steps away in the other direction! Then there are countless high-end/ethnic/casual dining spots, grocery shopping, wine bars and pubs, a magnificent library, bookstore, European-style bakeries, candy shop, gelato parlor, an enormous park (great for outdoor activities and various year-round events), and many quaint specialty shops not found in other parts of the city.

Depending on your mood for the day, you might start the morning with a brisk walk through Welles Park, followed by smoked lox and favorite dark roast across the street at Julius Meinl, make a stop or two at shops in Lincoln Square, have pad thai noodles for lunch at Opart Thai, then take the 'L' train ride to the Loop (downtown Chicago) for an afternoon at Millennium Park and the Art Institute, then head back to the neighborhood for dinner at Bistro Campagne, capping off the night at Huettenbar for beers. The next day may be a good time to bike around Lincoln Square, have a croissant and coffee at Selmarie, stop in across the street at Merz Apothecary, visit Old Town School of Folk Music to check out the night's performances, then on to early dinner at Mythos Greek Restaurant. Or just go economical and buy groceries/supplies at Jewel Food Store (a minute walk from the property) and have a cookout in the backyard!

About Narciso 'Narci' Tavas

My name is Narciso 'Narci' Tavas. I am a retired electrical engineer who came to the United States from the Philippines through employment with a global CPG firm with whom I had a long career. I greatly enjoyed the travels that came with my employment. I had memorable stays in Europe, particularly a one-year assignment in the Canary Islands, Spain. I have six children who grew up in Chicago, all of whom live within a short drive of Lincoln Square. I am a widower but happily re-married and live about a two-minute drive from this property. My wife and I enjoy times with the family, grandkids, travel, church functions, dining out and ballroom dancing.

Narciso 'Narci' Tavas purchased this apartment in 1997

Why Narciso 'Narci' Tavas chose Chicago

The family and I love this property because of the neighborhood it's in and the rich experiences we enjoy from living in the area. It has great access to public transportation and is steps away from anything a traveler would want.

What makes this apartment unique

The neighborhood plays a huge part, but the place is special for its openness and multi-faceted history. It had once been a restaurant, business office, an art gallery, wine-tasting site and most importantly, a place for family get-togethers.

Great location- charming neighborhood, close to train lines to downtown. Property itself was a well-maintained cozy apartment with everything you would need for a comfy get-away. Owner was very cordial & gave us great tips on restaurants & the sights! Great value!

The perfect place to stay in Chicago

  • 5 of 5

We did not know what exactly to expect when we booked this apartment and we were pleasantly surprised in many ways.

The neighborhood is really nice and safe with many places to eat and a Jewel supermarket within easy walking distance. It is very easy to get to downtown with public transport. We were actually living here for a couple of days instead of just visiting.

And many thanks to Ro for the tour of the neighborhood and all the best places to eat! If we ever have the chance to come back to Chicago we will certainly stay here again.

Great place and neighborhood!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have never been to the Lincoln square area. We found this apartment on VRBO and stayed for 3 nights. The owner was very accommodating and friendly. We have never stayed in a town in Chicago that felt so at home, friendly, and safe. The apartment was perfect for what we needed- clean, homey, and supplied pretty much anything you needed. We found ourselves staying in the area- other than going to a Cubs game (GO CUBS GO!!)- of the apartment because we liked it so much. There was plenty to do in the area. Overall, we absolutely loved this place and talk about returning here each year we come back to Chicago.

Great property, great location, lots to do and see. Lincoln Square good location.

  • 4 of 5

This is my first submission. I throughely enjoyed staying at this HomeAway. It is centrally located in the Lincoln Square area with access to light rail, and other public transit, restaurants, supermarkets, wine stores is great. The apartment is really a cute second story walk up. the owner/renter is very cooperative and helped with local knowledge and showed off somem of the amenities. It was also clean and smelled clean. I'm giving it four stars as this is my first ever review and will probably keep great rentals at four stars. Absolutely would recommend this property...MJT

Very good location, neighborhood and host. Apartment needs a little more maintenance.

  • 3 of 5

Even though it is a great and cozy apartment in a very nice area (far away from downtown), it needs a little better maintenance. Bed mattress is worn down and is not firm, air conditioners are noisy and did not work correctly (kept turning itself off), and bathtub, even though nice looking, was not clean and practical for showering. Close to bus station and a 10 minute walk from subway. Supermarket and delicious restaurants are really coose by.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. As with all of our guests, we are always available to answer any questions or address anything that will make your stay more comfortable. While we were not aware of any noise issues with the AC, we should point out that our air conditioning units (like most) shut off after they reach the desired temperature and then turn on again when the room gets warmer -- they do not run continuously. We have not had any negative comments from previous guests regarding the comfort of the bed, but we will look into it. Like many Chicago apartments, the bathroom features a clawfoot tub with a standard shower faucet and wrap around shower curtain. We haven't had any complaints and many guests enjoy the charm. Future guests (please see all of our reviews) should note that we make it a priority to ensure you are happy with your stay and encourage you to reach out at any time with questions or requests.

This property is located in Lincoln Square, a neighborhood in Chicago's northside that takes pride in its richly interwoven cultures and one-of-a-kind businesses that are endearing even for a diverse city like Chicago. Specialty shops like Merz Apothecary, Ash's Magic Shop, Timeless Toys and Gene's Sausage Shop and Fine Wine Brokers are but a few memorable stops in the area. Lincoln Square is a quaint enclave within a city rich in industry, finance, arts, architecture, blues/jazz, theater and ethnic neighborhoods. Amidst the urban bustle lies Lincoln Square's quiet, tree-lined streets where both residents and visitors enjoy year-round events, shopping, food and music festivals, gourmet and casual dining, neighborhood pubs, park activities, sightseeing, farmers markets, local craft beers and festivities like Oktoberfest that draw crowds from other states and countries. Some call the area 'Little Europe' for its European-style cafes, delis and specialty stores. Over its long and rich history, Lincoln Square has been settled by waves of immigrants from Germany, Greece, Eastern Europe, Asia and Mexico who have enriched the economy and traditions of the neighborhood. Cuisines from all continents are amply represented here.

Lincoln Square is also home to the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music, which, since moving to the neighborhood in the late 90's, has made the area a go-to destination for dining and nightlife. Many well-known folk, world, bluegrass, jazz, blues and country musicians from all over the world perform at the Old Town School of Music. Pete Seeger, Ottman Lieber, Mahalia Jackson, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Earl Klugh and Bonnie Koloc, Rickie Lee Jones, to name a few, have held concerts there.
