About Karen

Hello, we are the Ward family and (along with our very friendly Dachshund/Jack Russel named Lucky) will be your host during your stay at the Lake House. We are proud parents of three wonderful grown boys and now that they are no longer living at home, we have decided to share our home so that others can enjoy its charm as we do. We are an easy going family and love the simple things in life; family, friends, music, and meeting new people. So, come stay with us on the lake and I know you will have a spectacular vacation here in Melrose, FL.

What makes this house unique

The property sits on the east side of one of the largest lakes in Florida with breath taking sunsets year round. Quoted by world renowned biologist, Tom Morris to be 'the Queen of Florida lakes'; Lake Santa Fe is a 5,850-acre (2,370 ha) spring-fed lake that offers abundant wildlife, excellent fishing and recreational boating with two public boat ramps only minutes away. Our guests enjoy the serenity of a quiet getaway with all the necessary conveniences only a short drive away.

Great lake house near Gainesville!

  • 5 of 5

This house is big, spacious and is on a great setting by Santa Fe lake. There is a game room with full size pool table, TV and bar as well as a large and open family room with TV. The kitchen was fully equipped and had a good layout and everything in the house was clean and in great shape. There is a dock on Santa Fe Lake - we did not take advantage of fishing or boating but seems like a good lake for such activities. Melrose itself is a neat little town with a great seafood restaurant (all you can eat seafood buffet on Friday and Saturday). The owner Karen was very responsive and helpful. All in all, just a great place to stay in the Gainesville area - we went over for the football game on Saturday and it was an easy 20 minute or so drive over. Highly recommended!

Good retreat location

  • 4 of 5

I recently returned from staying here with two friends for the weekend. Overall, the property fulfilled our desire for a weekend retreat beautifully. There was plenty of space, the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking meals, and everything was in working order. The location on the lake gave us great sunset views and access for boating/swimming. I will also say that Karen was an extremely responsive host and a pleasure to coordinate with. She responded quickly to questions and provided flexibility when needed re: check in/check out times.

There were just a couple of issues that would be good for travelers to know ahead of time:

1.) The mattresses on the guest room beds are pretty hard and somewhat worn. This was not a problem for me, but was a problem for someone else in our group. Any sensitive sleepers should either plan to stay in the master bedroom or bring additional items for more comfort.

2.) This place is surrounded by nature - there will be insects. There were several insects found in one of the bedrooms, even though the house overall was clean and well-maintained. The dock also had a number of large spider webs when we used it. Again, this did not significantly impact our experience but could be an issue for some.

Overall, I am glad we chose this location and would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Jennifer, Thank you so much for the review, we are very pleased that you and your friends enjoyed your weekend retreat. It happens to be very timely that you mention the condition of the beds, of course we have put an extra foam mattress on the one bed as it is an extra firm mattress (purchased for family members that needed it for health reasons) and the other is indeed an older mattress set. They are actually both scheduled to be replaced within the month with much newer pillow-top mattresses. As you mentioned, we are surrounded by the nature of Florida with creatures of all kinds. We do try to minimize the nesting of spiders on the dock and eliminate the presence of bugs within the house, that is an ongoing battle we will continue to fight for our guests. All my best, Karen

Great family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, spacious home! Our family loved this lake house and had a great stay. The open floor concept was perfect for a large family. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed. The game room with pool table and ping pong was enjoyed by all. The sunsets were amazing on the dock and the family had fun catching fish on the dock. The sandy beach area was great for the little ones to splash around in. A public boat ramp is located within a couple miles and there are grocery stores within a few miles. The owner was prompt in responding to emails and was very accommodating. We would definitely recommend this home to others and plan to come back again!

Very modern, spacious, well appointed and maintained vacation rental home.

  • 4 of 5

Nice, large house for this area and very accommodating owners (willingness to accept additional "special" requests). Would have given five stars if not for the condition of the deck (walking underneath a maze of spider webs was a bit nerve wracking) and lack of small (but essential) equipment/accessories to tie up boat (no cleats or bumpering to protect from rough waters on this side of the lake). Overall a most enjoyable couple of days with the family in this rental!

Amazing sunsets!!!!

  • 4 of 5

Nice sized home on a beautiful piece of property. Amazing sunsets with skiable lake. Boat ramp within a couple miles and a large dock (a few dock cleats would be nice). Grocery stores within a few miles. We had an awesome time! Our stay was a pinch short of perfect...just need some new beds and linens.
