Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 6

A stay in our 1,200 sq. ft. guest cottage will help make any visit to Indianapolis one to remember. Located on a nine acre country estate just twenty minutes east of downtown Indianapolis, Buck Creek Cottage offers both business and vacation guests a great opportunity to experience the city and relax in the country.

Built in 1994, the cottage is just fifty feet from our private two acre stocked lake, so bring your fishing gear. As the photos illustrate , the cottage is fully furnished with the newest amenities. A central heating and air conditioning system insures that your stay will be comfortable winter or summer.

Over three acres of maintained grounds and gardens offers the perfect setting for a comfortable evening at home after visiting the sites and offerings of Indianapolis.

While most of Indianapolis' finest restaurants are located less than twenty minutes away, a fully equipped modern kitchen that includes a five burner gas range, double stainless steel sinks, ample counter and prep surfaces and full size dishwasher and refrigerator offers an easy alternative to eating out. An outdoor gas grill is provided in case your cooking preference is grilling.

If your interested in golf a dozen courses are within a twenty minute drive.

If shopping is your sport, Indianapolis' best shopping locations are all within a twenty-thirty minute drive. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and general sundries, as well as pizza and other fast food, are all less than five minutes away.

Wi-fi and cable service are included and a large HD flat screen offers the option to just stay home and take it easy if you're so inclined.

One bedroom is furnished with a king size bed while the other contains a pair of twin beds. The twin beds can also be configured as a king size bed if requested. A self-inflating queen size blowup and a roll away bed can be used to sleep up to seven adults. We also provide camp air mattresses for children and a Pack and Play, with mattress, for toddlers.

As photo #15 shows, the linear layout of the cottage's one bathroom permits simultaneous and comfortable usage of the walk-in shower and sink.

The entry area to the cottage contains a large dining area and breakfast counter and an open pass thru to the kitchen area for easy service. The living room is located just off the dining area and the combination offers the opportunity to entertain a small group of friends or family if desired.

While most of the lake's shoreline is maintained in its natural state, a cantilevered deck is located at the shoreline nearest the cottage for fishing, swimming or sunbathing. Chairs and lounges are also provided to ensure your time outdoors at Buck Creek Cottage is as comfortable and enjoyable as your time indoors.

A large fire pit located near the cantilevered deck is provided for those evenings under the stars. Firewood is provided for a couple of fires.

Please note that the pictures include photos of the estate's main residence to show the grounds and gardens as well and permit easier identification of our property, as the cottage sits fifty yards behind the main house and a hundred yards from Buck Creek Road. The cottage address is 384 Buck Creek Rd., Indianapolis, IN, 46229. Just plug Buck Creek Cottage into Google maps and it will bring you to the driveway of the main house.

We look forward to your visit.

About Lawrence & Margo Strodtman / Owner

This property has been an ongoing project since we bought it in 1983. Over the years we have added the guest cottage, the two acre stocked lake, and a substantial addition to the main residence. These additions were intended to help induce our children, once adults, to visit often. They visit when they can, but the closest one lives over five hours away, so frequent visits are not practical. So here we sit with a huge main house, a lovely guest cottage and wonderful grounds, lake and gardens and not nearly enough visitors enjoying them.

The income from the rentals will help maintain the estate and the interaction with our renters, if so desired, will help maintain our sanity.

I've lived in Indianapolis all my life and my wife has lived in the area since she started teaching in 1976. We love the area and we think we can help make your visit, whether business or pleasure, a more enjoyable one.

Lawrence & Margo Strodtman / Owner purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Lawrence & Margo Strodtman / Owner chose Indiana

Our property is located near Cumberland, Indiana, apparently the first stage coach stop east of Indianapolis on what became the Cumberland Road. Originally part of a forty-five acre farm owned by one of Cumberland's first merchants, in the late twenties the property was divided into five parcels. When we bought the property in the early eighties we thought it would be a nice place to live. With all the improvements we have made over the years, we now think it's also a great place to visit. Apparently our nieces and nephews agree, as they nicknamed the property 'Larryland'. And while, like our children, they are now adults, they still look forward to visiting 'Larryland' during both summer and winter holidays.

What makes this cottage unique

As the pictures illustrate, we maintain our residence on the grounds where Buck Creek Cottage is located. While we won't necessarily be around all the time we will be available when you first check in, assuming you have been able to give us a reasonable arrival time window. We will certainly find time early in your stay to answer any questions you may have about Indianapolis' shopping, attractions and restaurants.

Lovely place!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here for a week and loved everything! It was the perfect place for our two loud and energetic kids to run and play instead of being confined to a small hotel room. Larry and Margo have thought of everything for this place, including strategically placed nightlights around the house in case you wake up in the middle of the night. The cottage was very clean and neat, and just the right size for us. We had a blast fishing and canoeing, and there were fireflies galore, creating an idyllic, magical scene every night. It was only about 30 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, where there was lots to do. We will never stay in a hotel again and hope to be back some day!

Lovely and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here in June when the temperature was in the 90's every day. I was taking a short course at Butler where the classroom was not air conditioned so having a cool bedroom was very important, and this bedroom came through. Some places are listed as air conditioned when all they have is a window air conditioner. Not so here.

The pond was perfect for sitting next to in the evening and for breakfast in the morning. The Strodtmans couldn't have been more accommodating, including providing us with fresh baked cookies. This was the first time I have ever rented a place that really had everything I could need already there. Since I didn't expect this, I brought a lot of stuff I didn't need (Kleenex, paper towels, plastic wrap).

We hope to return in the spring.

Lovely, lovely, lovely!

  • 5 of 5

My four sisters and I had a reunion here for a long weekend in early June. The cottage is spacious, well-appointed, and scrupulously clean. Larry and Margo are gracious hosts who made sure that we had everything we needed. We loved having our coffee on the dock each morning, watching blackbirds, herons, ducks, and an entertaining pair of geese. We did not have a campfire, but there is a large campfire ring and firewood provided if you are so inclined. The setting was very peaceful and hard to believe it is so close to Indianapolis. We swam in the pond, and I wish we had spent some more time fishing, as there are plenty of fishin the large pond. This cottage would make a lovely couples weekend get away, too.

Perfect family vacation

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage was wonderful in so many ways...nicely appointed with comfortable and attractive furnishings, a kitchen well supplied for meal preparation, ample linens, and an overall welcoming feeling from the first foot in the door. Outside beside the beautiful lake is where we spent hours every day -- fishing, canoeing, watching George the Canada goose and his partner, having a campfire, and just hanging out. Larry and Margo made us feel comfortable and welcome. Our family drove from Colorado and North Carolina to convene here for a bucket-list item of attending the Indy 500...but got so much more. I highly recommend this little getaway for anyone seeking a truly relaxing vacation.

VRBO that is off the charts for highest rating rental we ever stayed at. It will never be beat!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was top notch! Very nicely done. Hotel quality bedding on very comfortable bed. Kitchen with all appliances and plenty of condiments as well as coffee, tea, hot choc. sugar etc.

Incredible hospitality from the owners. The view was picturesque!! Close to hiking, horseback riding, mini golf, movie, theaters, groc. stores, restaurants and gas stations. I wouldn't have changed a single thing!!! I would go back to Indian just to stay at this cottage. The owners really care and it shows in the way they have created this beautiful property. Pictures are very nice but in person, breath taking. I cannot say enough other than I wish it was mine. If it was, I wouldn't rent. I would live in it year round. Thank-you Larry for providing us with everything we needed to make our week perfect. You will see us again!!!

Convenient location with outstanding amenities - GREAT for business travelers!

  • 5 of 5

Our 3-person team filming in the Indianapolis area for our small nonprofit were looking for a location where we could conveniently get around, but also have a place where we could gather to review our work at the end of each day. We had no idea how accommodating Larry and Margo's place would be, nor how beautiful and restful their property is. I'd highly recommend Buck Creek Cottage for business travelers, as well as for couples or small families. They provided every thing we needed with the exception of a quick trip to the grocery store for meal preparation. Thank you, and if we ever need to travel to Indianapolis again, we'll be sure to stay here!
