Need a quiet place to unwind and relax? This farm is 600 acres of oaks, dogwoods, pines and wildflowers surrounded by the Bankhead National Forest, with no neighbors in sight!
Why do we call it the River Art Cabin? It sits on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek, the 'River' part. It was constructed by an artist named Art Fowler, whose original art still hangs throughout the cabin. Amazing!
IF you need more than 2 bedrooms and don't mind spreading your group out a bit, we also have the Bungalow cabin on the same property. Or if you would rather rent a bit smaller, more cozy spot, you may decide to rent only the Bungalow. We rent it for $100/night, plus cleaning fee. The Bungalow is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, living room and wonderful kitchen upstairs over the barn. It is about 100 yards from the River Art Cabin. The Bungalow has a nice deck overlooking a meadow that leads down to Clear Creek and the Secret Beach! It is a cozy and relaxing spot in and of itself. See the last few photos for what it looks like!
You may want to spend your days fishing or tubing the creek or exploring the incredible canyons of the Sipsey Wilderness. Perhaps you would enjoy mountain biking the miles of Bankhead National Forest roads near by. Love hiking and backpacking, the Sipsey has many miles of hiking trails.
Love to hunt? Check out the Bankhead National Forest! You can drive just a few miles and hunt on National Forest land.
Enjoy birdwatching? What about a night with no street lights for perfect stargazing? This is the place for you!
There is a full kitchen in both cabins, but if you'd rather not cook, hop in the car and run to Double Springs for a homecooked Italian meal at the Sapore Grill!
There are two bedrooms in the River Art Cabin, the Master bedroom has a king size bed and a private upstairs deck with a sliding glass door. There is a private Master bath also. The second bedroom has a bunk bed.
One of my favorite parts of the place is the Gazebo, a beautiful structure set atop a sandstone bluff overlooking a shoals of Clear Creek about 70 feet below. You can enjoy a sunset with a glass of wine sitting on the gazebo listening to the rippling creek below. Or wake up early and walk down the path to the gazebo with a hot cup of coffee.
You can stroll for miles on our dirt roads or walk down the path to Clear Creek and take a dip in the cool waters that are a tributary to Smith Lake.
Truly remote. This cottage is at the end of the road... literally! You will drive down a small country road for about 4 miles and when the road ends... you are home!

Maggie Johnston purchased this cottage in 2011
We bought this place for the pure joy of owning a remote piece of Nature on the banks of Clear Creek!
There is nothing quite like communing with nature in a beautiful place near a moving stream. You will find it valuable to spend some quiet time just sitting on the porch or gazebo and listening to nature!
We had a terrific experience. The house is spacious, clean, and well stocked. The area is beautiful and remote. Between the creek beach and the pond and trails we found so much to explore. We hope to return!
This vacation was to get away from it all (stress, work, etc.) That is exactly what I got. The home was away from it all. It was quiet and relaxing. I really enjoyed staying there and may go again in the near future.
This is like our home away from home. The house is awesome. Its clean and everything is furnished --except for food and drinks, of course. Friends, family and pets love it as well. The Secret Beach provides hours and hours of fun for everyone especially when the water is a little warm and you can get in with tubes. Someone needs to tell me where the fish in these gorgeous fishing spots! It was hard going home after we had been there for just a few days. We love hiking the trails at Sispey, so it's a perfect arrangement for us. We've been twice in the past year and I'm booking again. I figure we'll need our fix of this place at least 4 times a year!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful property with us. We had the best time!! We walked to the"secret" beach and gazebo and explored the property...we actually caught a "whopper" in the pond ( it would have made a good bait...lol) were highly recommend this place for anyone who is looking to truly get away from it all!!
Thank you again

My husband and I stayed here for Valentine's weekend. We loved every minute of our stay. Maggie is the best person I have ever dealt with renting from VRBO for years. The place is full of beautiful sites and the home is very clean and cozy. It is also very well stocked with any kind of cooking dishes you may need. We will certainly be back!!!! We have not felt that relaxed in a long time. Also, thanks so much to Mark bringing the firewood. It sure came in handy having a roaring fire in the fireplace.. Thanks to you both for sharing this lovely home with all that love nature as much as we do.
Tubing on Clear Creek, miles of walking or mountain biking trails, hiking and backpacking in the famous Sipsey Wilderness Area, sitting in the gazebo overlooking the shoals of Clear Creek with a glass of wine or cup of coffee!
