I am a retired child psychologist and worked in special education. Children are my favorite people. I live in Locust Lake village just across the road from my rental home. I loved it so much as a vacation destination that I chose to retire here as well.
The property that I am renting is very close to my home and my heart so I chose to keep it and rent it rather than sell. It is a vacation home and not set up to be a permanent residence. A family relative owned a home here for many years and was president of the village association. We often stayed at his home and eventually purchased one of our own. That is now the rental property. My permanent home is just across the street from my rental.
I am an animal lover and enjoy watching the constant parade of wild life here. Everything from birds to bears can be seen as we are next to the state game lands. The bears are rare but they are here. I also enjoy being around water and the lakes are beautiful here. I can go skiing in the winter and play golf in the summer all with in a few miles from home.
I have two grown children. My son, who is married with two girls who are all skiiers. They are here on weekends from Dec. to March. They teach handicap skiing, where I worked for 26 years, and I first met my daughter-in-law. My daughter is single and retired from riding the top race horses of her generation in the country. She now lives in NY state where she saves race horses when they leave racing and is training them with a methed like the 'Horse Whisperer' to be riding horses and finds homes for them. She also rescues dogs from euthanizing and finds homes for them. I am very proud of my family.
Joyce Warne purchased this house in 1996
Locust Lake Village is very family oriented. The people, ambiance and location are what I fell in love with; and the amenities are fantastic. There is enough in this community to keep everyone happy without going past the front gate. The 24 hour security is very benificial with children. I would feel comfortable allowing my two granddaughters to walk safely alone to the beach, etc. The people are friendly, very helpful, and can be knowledgable about local information.
Our association in the village is very active from keeping the wooden bear at the entrance dressed for the holidays to the fine grooming of the public areas. There are archery clubs, knitting clubs, (The Happy Hookers!,) fishing groups, etc. There are special activities for the holidays, such as barbques, bonfires with smores and DJ's, bike parades, hayrides, games for kids on the beach, end of school year parties at the beach, winter events including ice golf, cardboard boat races, ice fishing, etc.
The house is very well lit with the three large sky lights and three large sliding doors. It is enjoyable to watch the wild life; many deer, squirrels, turkeys, chipmunks, and an occasional bear. The deer can be hand fed by a very patient human. I could wake up in the morning with a view of the trees outside the skylight, and deer wandering outside the sliding glass door. All without stepping out of bed. (Especially if someone would bring me coffee, not provided in rental!) This house is ideal for those who want the woods with the comforts of home available. There are three air purifiers in the home for those with alergies. My daughter in law has many alergies and this is helpful with her in the woods. The temperatures here are almost always 10 degrees cooler than in the cities of NY or Phila. (We lovingly call those the 'Flat Lands.') Yet the beaches and open areas are warmed by the summer sun. This is due to the over 1,900 ft. sea level. The location of the home is centered in the village and a short distance to all amenities. It is on a double lot with an extra parking area on the second lot. This can be used to set up nets for games, etc. Bikes are a good use for getting around the village.
This renter listed 7 guests. We assume there were over 20 including all ages. They did much damage, broke house rules, and community rules. Security was called on them several times. A week after they left we found a shive, (short knife with a handle wrapped in black tape used by criminals as a LEGAL weapon due to it's size and used by criminals in jail.) I would have evicted them, and would do so in the future, but we did not know the proper procedure.
Our toddler had a great time, the lake and park were a great hit. The house was nice and the owner is very nice as well. Previous tenant had caused some damage but the owner was very responsive and we worked it all out.
Had a wonderful time in Poconos and there was much to do in the area. The house itself was cozy and was equipped with all the necessities my family needed from pots and pans and bed linens. Definitely would book again, only wish we had stayed longer.
With 7 people in total, it was so nice to be able to share a home and give each other enough space. The two couples each had their own rooms and the three kids shared a room. They had a bunk bed and a trundle, so each kid had their own bed. The front deck is so nice and relaxing to sit on and take in the nature. There is a fire pit and a grill. There are several lakes to choose from in the community and we went to the one at the end of the street, right in walking distance. Joyce also came over to make sure all was well and that everything went nice and smoothly. We were only able to stay from Friday night until Sunday, so we just enjoyed the house and lake but that was really a vacation in itself. The best part? The price per night would have been the same as a mediocre hotel that would have only fit the three of us. We would not have been able to get the nice vacation that we did otherwise. Thanks for the great time, Joyce! You have a lovely cabin.
Would love to go again and stay in this property.
Joyce's home was perfect for our family of 7 and Joyce was a great host, constantly making sure our weekend was going to be enjoyable. The home had everything you can ask for, the community is worth a trip on its own and the location for us was just right. Close to everything we wanted to do with our time there. Myself, my Wife and my kids are all planning to stay again.
This home was exactly what we were looking for. We came on our first trip to the Poconos with our 2yr old son, 7month old daughter and Lab. Our son will always know this home as "the Poconos"! There was plenty of room for us inside and outside. The deck and fire pit were great at night when the temp cooled down some. Being inside of the Locust Lakes Village, we had several options for fishing and swimming lakes that were either a short drive or walk for us.
The owner, Joyce, was extremely responsive and a pleasure to work with both before and during our stay. The house was clean and everything was in working order.
I hope that we are able to visit again.
Many brouchures are with the welcome book provided in the house. Specific information can be provided at our office or by the owner. There are many natural sites to visit that are free or have a minimal entrance fee. Some being Boulder Field, Dingmans Ferry, Delaware Water Gap, etc. There are many more, 'must see' places than can be mentioned here. Given your personal preferances a list can be provided.
