About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Stairway to Heaven is a charming cottage located on Lake Lure, surrounded by trees in a relaxing and peaceful setting. Very private, yet conveniently close to local supermarket, several restaurants and Chimney Rock. This cozy abode has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a queen sized sofa bed in the living room. The entire house has been remodeled, savoring the knotty pine wood walls.

Upon entrance, you will find 2 bedrooms, one has a queen sized bed, the other has a set of log style bunk beds. The bathroom has a tub and shower. The large kitchen has plenty of work space and is filled with all the amenities, including a K Cup coffee maker. It is open to the dining room which features a gas fire place and a rustic style wood dining room table that seats 8. A flat screened television hangs above the mantel and can be viewed from the kitchen, dining room and living room. Downstairs is the master suite with private bath, gas fire place, TV and sofa.

Beyond the master suite is an enclosed porch with a glider, rocking chair and Foosball table. Lift up the top of the Foosball table and you will find other fun games. From the porch, step outside onto our new deck. Here you can enjoy meals, a glass of wine and listen to the sounds of the birds, crickets and water from the damn.

Continue on down the stairs to the boat house which houses a kayak, paddle board and other fun water items. Our view of the damn is lovely and set in a quiet part of the lake which is perfect for swimming or lying on a raft.

Whether you are looking for romance, an escape from your every day life or a relaxing family getaway, Stairway to Heaven is the answer.

About Mara and Frank Butera

My parents built a summer home on Lake Lure in 1950. I have many wonderful memories swimming and water skiing here. As soon as I introduced Frank to Lake Lure, he fell in love with the place. So much so, we got married here under the Gazebo across from the beach. We knew that one day we would buy a home here. This became a family affair. My cousin's husband was the contractor. My husband being in the kitchen remodeling business built all of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as the master suite furniture. The painted window in the living room was done by my cousin. And some of the photographs on the walls were taken by another cousin who is a professional photographer living in Lake Lure.

We love our cottage and Lake Lure and hope that all who stay here, enjoy the peace and tranquility that this wonderful place provides.

Mara and Frank Butera purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Mara and Frank Butera chose Lake Lure

We like that you can park directly in front of the house. Our street has easy access. No inclines for flat landers like ourselves. We feel like we are out in the woods, yet Ingles is only 2 miles away. The walk down to the boat house is great exercise. This house was in need of much repair, however we saw the potential and knew it was ours from the get go. I love the fact that we have so much land which we have future .plans to put in gardens. We also loved the knotty pine walls and wood floors and made a point of saving this.

What makes this cottage unique

We feel the house has so much charm. It is updated, yet rustic with an old time mountain feel. Our deck is wonderful any time, but we particularly love it at night. Sitting outside with a glass of wine and listening to the sounds of nature is as relaxing as it gets. And during winter, we love sitting in front of the fire place and playing board games or doing puzzles. We have been here for every season. My husband loves the winter when there are no leaves on the trees and you can see everything. I love the late spring when the trees are full and the flowers are beginning to blossom. Whatever your season, you can't miss.

A Wonderful Vacation Home Where Memories Are Made

  • 5 of 5

Stairway to Heaven lived up to its name. Our family loved the home and had a great time on the lake for water sports. The home provided a peaceful place to relax with beautiful views of the lake from the inside the house, decks or screened in porch. The dock location in a quiet, no wake cove was great for just floating in the water or sitting in the comfortable chairs at the dock with the July weather being perfect for such activities. Having the kayak, canoe and paddle board ready to use from the dock was terrific, too. The home was clean with plenty of towels and linens. We loved that the home was pet friendly. Great tips were given on where to eat and what to do in the area. We visited The Biltmore, Chimney Rock, and Whitewater Rafting. Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed our time together at this wonderful place on Lake Lure. Memories made...priceless!

Some good, some not so good

  • 3 of 5

THE GOOD

The cleanliness. We loved how clean the entire house was. A+

The dock/boathouse. Our favorite thing, especially the grandkids. We fished, swam and kayaked.

The kitchen. It was big enough for two or three to work together and had any pan, bowl, or utensil we needed. All the appliances worked well.

The bathroom upgrades. Everyone wanted to use the walk-in shower.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

The hide-a-bed. It was so uncomfortable that we adults initially took turns sleeping on it. We finally let one of the kids have it. He loved it.

The musty, moldy smell in the lower bedroom. My guess is the smell was coming from the utility room. It was pretty bad.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. Before I book anyone, I always ask them to call me before accepting them. When someone such as yourself has a particularly large group I always go over the layout of the house with them. More than 6 people, someone will have to sleep on a sofa bed. Our guests usually choose to place children on the pull-out sofa bed because they are notoriously uncomfortable for adults. I also tell our guests on the phone and in emails that if they have any problems or questions while staying in the house, to call or text me. Since the humidity by the lake is very high in the summer time we use damp-rid and odor killing natural enzymes to alleviate any mustiness that normally can happen in lake houses in the summer, especially if it is very rainy as this season has been. I appreciate that some people can be more sesitive to odors than others and I so wish you texted or called me with this issue during your stay, as our housekeeper could have come by to freshen the room up immediately. We try to anticipate as much as possible for your stay with us and are very responsive to guest's immediate needs when communicated.

3rd Time We've Stayed Here--Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here two summers in a row and once on Spring Break. It's a great lake cabin in a great location. It's near the dam on Lake Lure and doesn't see heavy boat traffic. It's also close to Ingles so you can pick up anything you need within a few minutes. You'll probably only need food though because everything you need is in the cabin. We spent most of our time on the dock you see in the pic. That's the boat house which has a canoe, kayak and paddle board. We used them a ton. The kids fished for bluegill right in the boat house. They caught a bunch with just bread for bait. The lake was a really nice temperature and we had great weather all week. We'll be back.

it's also close to Chimney Rock, the Biltmore and other attractions. We went tubing on the Green River one day and had a blast. Use Green River Cove Tubing, the other companies left people stranded the day we went.

This one's a winner guys. Don't miss a chance to stay here.

A great getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent time. Although the weather was predicted to be cold and rainy, lake Lure delivered its special magic with mid 70's and sunny most of the week. We even got in the lake one day. Kayaking was terrific and we made it back to Chimney Rock which looks back to its usual spectacular beauty after last year's fire. Can't say enough about the great time we had. We are looking forward to out time scheduled in August. - Tim & Lisa

Awesome awesome!!

  • 5 of 5

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Frank and Mara"so cottage. Extra touches abound from the kuerig coffee maker, gas grill, wonderful outdoor spaces, canoes, kayak, and paddle board to a basket full of towels for taking to the lake. Nice front load washer and dryer. The downstairs master suite is wonderful. Oh and the shower- we absolutely loved-tile and pebble stone with dual shower heads. Frank and Mara have done a wonderful job updating this home with all modern conveniences while maintaining the cottage feel with the knotty pine walls. Just cannot say enough about this place. We had an awesome time on the lake, in chimney rock, and at Harrah's casino. We will be back!!!
