About the property

Private Cabin Retreat on 45 Acres @ 9200' Elevation in the Royal Gorge Region

This charming 3200 sq ft mountain cabin sits on a private, gated ranch property & offers 360° of mountain views including the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Breathe in the tranquility whether on foot, mountain bike or leisurely from the cabin's treasured wrap- around deck. Check out living GREEN off the grid with this solar powered house with an automatic backup generator. We have a excellent deep well with the best tasting mountain water you'll find.

Conveniently located in the Royal Gorge Region less than 20 miles up from some of our country's greatest white water rafting & fly fishing, this self-sufficient cabin runs on solar and offers 5 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a family room, a dining room and a loft. It is on 45 private acres with access to an additional 1500 BLM acres. The adventurous possibilities are limitless!

The master bedroom offers a queen bed and on-suite bathroom. Across the hall is the second bedroom with a double bed and serene views. A fun ladder leads you to the loft area above the living room where there's additional sleeping space with a double bed and a twin bunk bed. Oh yeah, there's another full bath - how plush for a remote cabin!

The cozy living room, kitchen and dining area offer an intimate place to prepare and enjoy a meal, read a good book or simply take in the stunning views. Appreciate the true perfection that only nature can offer in the home's custom touches such as the Douglas Fir beams, beautiful hard wood floors and the charming wood-burning heater with its exquisite moss-rock hearth. Another unique amenity is the property's parking situation - a three-car garage for your use!

The property strategically sits in Cotopaxi, the home to fabulous white water rafting tours and guided fly fishing experiences. Whether you love skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, you will have day-trip opportunities to explore many great areas.

'Nature has been for me, for as long as I remember, a source of solace, inspiration, adventure, and delight; a home, a teacher, a companion.'

-- Lorraine Anderson

------------------

There's so much to discover on the 45-acres & the adjacent 1500 BLM acreage, that you can plan to spend your entire vacation on the property. Below you'll find some of our favorite things to do on the property. And, if you're wanting to add a day-trip or two, ALL of these fantastic activities are available in the Royal Gorge Region:

* White Water Rafting, Fly Fishing & 4-Wheeling ... Cotopaxi - 15 miles S

* Salida ... Horseback Riding, Hot Springs, Golfing, Jeep Trails - 38 miles W

* Canon City ... The Royal Gorge, the Royal Gorge Dinner Train, Zip-Lining, Colorado Prison Museum, Holy Cross Abbey & Wine Tasting - 47 miles W

* Monarch ... Skiing (GREAT FOR KIDS), Snow-Boarding, Snowmobiling, Dog Sled Rides - 56 miles W

* Cripple Creek ... Gold Mining & Gambling - 77 miles NE

* Alamosa ... The Sand Dunes & Rio Grande Scenic Railroad - 133 miles S

You will enjoy the flexibility of being able to explore all of the exciting areas and activities in the dichotomous region of Central Southern Colorado & the chance to return to the seclusion and beauty that only a truly remote, mountain cabin can offer.

Here are some of our favorite things to enjoy on the property...

- The summer wildflowers that blanket the rolling meadows between June and August.

- Explore the cliffs behind the home to the east & the beautiful slot trail leading to the top of the peak.

- Go in search of arrowheads and antler sheds in the washes on the property and the BLM property.

- Bird and animal watching - deer, bear, coyotes and the occasional elk.

- Watch the weather roll in and at night stargaze at an electric sky

- Appreciate the spectacular sunsets with a cup of coffee in hand on the wrap-around deck.

Please Note: Given the wonderful seclusion, 4-wheel drive is suggested but not needed. Many visitors have arrived in cars.

*** We can't wait for you to come up and experience our secluded piece of heaven with majestic views you have to see to believe!

About Tammy & Dave May

Tammy and I are avid outdoors-types and we love the endless paths to hike, mountain bike & in Tammy's case, run. :)

I proposed to Tammy under the big ponderosa pine by the house before we built the home in 2003. Fondly, we call that spot 'Engagement Point'. We love the areas activities....we lived and loved the log home for 7 years full time. Today, we love escaping back up to the property & we're excited to share our little piece of heaven with you and other vacation renters.

Tammy & Dave May purchased this cabin in 1993

Why Tammy & Dave May chose South Central Colorado

We bought the gorgeous 45 acres because this area is considered the 'Banana Belt' of Colorado due to the moderate winters. We fell in love with the property for its views, meadows and privacy. It also is more enjoyable not having to deal with I-70 congestion to and from the Denver metro area.

What makes this cabin unique

On the property, we love...

* The variety of foliage visible from the cabin is awesome - yucca & oak brush on the south facing slopes, aspens in the meadow and pine and fir trees on the north slopes.

* The summer wildflowers that blanket the rolling meadow between June and August.

* Exploring the cliffs behind the detached garage to the east & the beautiful slot trail leading up to the top of the peak.

* Hiking in search of arrowheads and antler sheds in the washes on the property and the BLM

* Bird and animal watching - deer, bear, hear coyotes singing, fox, bobcat and the occasional elk.

* Watching the weather roll in and at night stargaze at an electric sky.

* The spectacular sunsets with a cup of coffee in hand on the wrap-around deck.

Our family had an amazing time! The cabin is so beautiful and cozy. Cleaner than ANY hotel we have ever stayed in. There was everything we needed in the kitchen and sharing our meals at that huge dining room table was a big hit with everyone. We had so much fun playing foos ball down stairs. The view from the deck was sooo breath taking! We all got up in the mornings and had coffee and just enjoyed the view. I will never forget the "engagement tree" thank you for sharing that spot with us, that is where Troy and I began our new adventure our own engagement. There are so many activities to enjoy in your area also. The white water rafting was a real adrinaline rush and we are all hooked. The helitour and royal gorge is something I would recomend to everyone. I can't imagine a more perfect vacation. Thank you so much. We will be back and we will definetly tell all our friends to look you up for their vacations!

A beautiful home with an awe-inspiring view in a secluded mountain area.

  • 5 of 5

We spent our annual family vacation here and had a terrific time. We had an age range of 3 to 77 and found that it was great for all of us. Good area for hiking and wildlife photography. The horseshoe pit and foosball table were nice extras for times that we weren't out exploring the area. We loved the secluded remoteness of the property, but it truly is a "getaway" as it is approximately a 45 minute drive from the nearest highway.

In a Wilderness far far away.

  • 4 of 5

This self-sufficient mountain wilderness cabin was just what our group needed. The drive up is long and winding, a little dusty but well worth it. This cabin is big enough that our group of 10 was able to individually find our own space if needed. Fully stocked with hit movies in case you are not tired after a long day of experiencing the outdoors as well as popular board games if you prefer the low tech entertainment. The kitchen was spacious enough for up to four people to help prepare food. Beds were plentiful and varied in firmness. There is even a recreation room in the basement. Everything was clean and ready for our visit.

The property is full of beautiful mountain views, a sky full of stars at night and all the tranquility one could ask for. Dave was easy to work with and accommodated our needs. This property is suitable for large groups, multiple families or larger families. There is plenty of wildlife to see near and around the property.

Be aware that you may not have cell service once you proceed up the mountain. So cache your maps, directions and make all of your calls before you head up. Communication will be limited for most. Also, we suggest taking the extra minutes to head into the nearest town for groceries before you head up, you will be happy you did. Thank you Tammy and Dave, we will consider staying again.

Awesome Place to Recharge!!

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Mays' cabin for a boys' trip with my over-40 year old friends and our sons. Everyone loved it. Nicely appointed, peaceful, and incredible views. Great for a group trip with tons of hiking and rafting opportunities in and around nearby Salida.

Cross this one off my Bucket List!

  • 5 of 5

I had always wanted to stay in a secluded cabin in the mountains & finally got to do just so. We thank Dave & Tammy May for sharing this wonderful place with us & the others that have stayed there. The views are breath taking. It rained almost every late afternoon & evening while we were there, which added to the mystical bound it had on us. From seeing the rain on the mountains approaching, the trails, the wildlife on the travel to the cabin which finalized the days with the cool mountain breeze flowing through the windows. It is comfortable & clean. We stayed on the first floor while our friends were on the lower floor and had plenty of space to do our own thing! We shared kitchen duties with the other couple & had a great time preparing our meals together. It definitely was a nice break from our busy day to day lives & the Oklahoma heat & humidity. I recommend this cabin to anyone wanting to get away from it all. It will not disappoint. We loved it!
