About Michael Marzolf

My wife and I have been part-time residents of Park Rapids Lakes Area since 2005.

Having camped in the area as kids, coming back was so exciting! We appreciate that the area is low-key, and quieter than the Brainerd area, but still there is plenty to do.

We are both avid cyclists and runners, and REALLY appreciate the Heartland Trail (49 miles paved). We also are triathletes, and take part in the Northwoods Triathlon each year.

We hope you enjoy our cabin and the Park Rapids Area as much as we have, and that you come back to build more family memories!

Michael Marzolf purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Michael Marzolf chose Minnesota

We purchased this home on Big Sand as a legacy property, one that will be in our family forever. As you will see, it is in beautiful shape, ready to be enjoyed. We are interested in having you stay if you are interested in taking care of it too -- that way it will be just as nice when you return next year :-)

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The home is absolutely beautiful! The stairs were not a huge deal. 96 to be exact:) the kids and adults had no trouble getting up the stairs. The house is cool at nights and the fans helped us all to seep while we couldn't hear the noises going on around he house. If you have a large group like we did, 14, with 5 kids, you may want to know that you have to be very quiet:) So if your family likes to stay up late and be loud this isn't a place for that. Very well taken care of and has everything you could possibly want! It was perfect!

Our stay at this property was fantastic. The lake is beautiful and the extra long dock is outstanding.

Mike was great to deal with and even contacted me during our stay to make sure everything was going well.

We will be back!!

Fantastic Week at the Lake

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful vacation on Big Sand Lake in this beautiful home! We are a family of 6 adults and 4 children, and there was plenty of space for all of our activities. The children and adults alike loved the air hockey and ping pong in the basement, and there was plenty of space in the bedrooms and the living room for reading and board games. We ate every breakfast and dinner outside on the huge deck and enjoyed the lovely view of the lake. The lake was marvelous for swimming--such clear water and nice and shallow for the younger children. Every night, we had a fire in the fire pit and made s'mores. Many thanks for the s'more ingredients!! It was truly the vacation that we had hoped for!

Best home we've ever rented!!

  • 5 of 5

Six of us stayed at Mike’s cabin for 2 weeks for a family reunion, 3 of us from the UK and 3 from the USA. We chose this cabin after much research, getting down to a short list of 7 and then taking a vote, so it was quite a rigorous selection process!! We have rented many places all over the USA in the past 15 years and I can honestly say that the standard of this cabin was the best we have ever experienced. The furnishings and kitchen equipment etc were all first class and soaps and toilet rolls all supplied; that hasn’t been the case with other properties we have stayed at. The bed linens in particular were lovely and are all very new and these are not shown in the photos on the website. In fact, as good as the cabin looks on the website it really doesn’t do it justice, when you get there it is way nicer. Mike was so helpful throughout the booking process and checked that we had everything we needed during our stay.

We had a great time just relaxing at the cabin soaking up the sun, fishing and swimming in the lake and during the couple of rainy days we had, reading in the cosy spaces upstairs and having table tennis and pool tournaments in the basement. We saw bald eagles many times, a deer whilst we were sitting round the fire pit and loved the sounds of the loons on the lake. We rented bikes in Dorset and went to a pro bull riding event in Park Rapids over the holiday weekend.

Normally we dine out quite a lot when on vacation but I can’t really comment on the local restaurants as we only went out to eat on one occasion, nobody wanted to leave the cabin and the lake!! We had barbeques and cooked ourselves and then sat round the fire pit and had s’mores which Mike had very kindly provided.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mike’s cabin and if you are looking for a lake home rental in Northern Minnesota I can highly recommend this house.

Three generations loved it

  • 5 of 5

The property is very nice, clean and private. The house is beautiful and its log construction architecture is interesting with a very cozy feel for a large home. Although there is no central air, even a slight breeze from the lake kept it cool inside, especially at night. Lots of big fans in each room worked well too. The beds were all comfy and bathrooms were clean. The grand kids loved sleeping in the upstairs loft and the air hockey and ping pong table in the basement. The lack of internet turned out to be a blessing and kept us all talking to each other. There was lots of firewood for campfires and ingredients for some mores in the evenings. The large shaded deck and table was a great place to eat and chat and enjoy the outdoors. The long stairway down to the lake was good exercise and our kids liked it. We loved the lake view from the landings. The lake is crystal clear and the kids loved the shallow sandy bottom near the dock. There was surprising little traffic on the lake, even during the weekends. The long dock was very nice and allowed the adults to swim in deeper water while the grandkids were safe in the shallows. A nice boat lift kept our boat high and dry and the grandkids caught fish every evening close to the cabin. We rented a nice new wave runner from a nearby resort on the lake for one day and it was reasonably priced (and fast). The kids all loved skiing and tubing behind it. There was a nice paved bike path through the woods and a few good restaurants in the nearby village of Dorset. Our three generations had a great time and built some very nice memories during our stay. We would highly recommend it to our friends.

Last year there was a grass fire from just a sparkler -- We apologize but this cannot happen again, and thus we cannot allow fireworks.

We had many families stay at the cabin in and they have had loads of fun, and this makes us very happy! Unfortunately we had one guest who was loud and obnoxious, including the use of profanity. Our neighbors were offended, and my wife and I were as well. This incident caused an enormous amount of stress and ended up costing me over $2,000 to defend myself. I recovered part of this cost from withholding 100% of the guests damage deposit. We truly want every guest to have the most fun possible while they are at the cabin -- we simply remind you that this fun cannot be at the expense of our neighbors. Sincere thanks in advance!!
