Mary Minott has worked for the Brookline Public Health Department for the past 18 years. Married to Owen Minott, an administrator for the Brookline Public School system, they have two grown children, a golden retriever and a rescue dog. Favorite activities include early morning runs on Cranes Beach and afternoon walks around black and white beach with our dogs. Our family also enjoys kayaking up the Essex river to the back side of Crane's beach, and paddle boarding off Manchester town docks.
Mary Minott purchased this house in 1965
This property is perfect for enjoying the ocean and nature. With 7, 000 square feet and four landscaped acres, there is great space and privacy. Some of the most beautiful beaches in New England are close by.
Manchester is in the heart of Cape Ann, the more relaxed, less harried Cape. Cape Ann's beauty is recognized by many of America's best painters who chose to paint here including Winslow Homer, Milton Avery and Edward Hopper. The area still has a thriving artist community and art galleries. Some of the best seafood anywhere is here. Local farms and farm stands are minutes from the house. Many excellent restaurants are close by.
Manchester has a superb public school system, excellent library, tennis and basketball courts.
We also love the fact that we are just over 30 minutes outside of Boston with its rich cultural heritage and its first class arts institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts. Boston is also easily accessible by train from Manchester Center.
Boston is just 3 and 1/2 hours from New York by Acela. You can avoid traffic and get to our house from New York for less time than it would take you to get to Montauk on a busy weekend. Once here, you can truly relax with life in a historic seaside town.
This historic home was built in 1790 and has the charm and details of a historic colonial home including 6 fireplaces with carved wood mantels including one with boats, fitting to this seaside town. It has also been updated with modern conveniences- the kitchen has top-of-the line appliances and granite counter tops. A unique blend of the charm of the old and the ease and convenience of the new. Many of the sofa's and chairs are down filled and the recliner is leather- everything is very comfortable.
The house's four acres have gorgeous gardens, lovely trees and large lawns for kids to play on. The large, established trees provide for shade and cool breezes through the summer. Many birds live on the property - from hummingbirds to a pair of wild turkeys with their six young.
From a stone's throw away (literally) from the renowned Essex County Club to the 2 minute drive to Singing Beach, this historically significant estate is a spectacular, serene and secluded gem. Owners are always available and super accommodating (even to the point of picking up fresh fish for us while they shopped for their own at the local market--wonderfully thoughtful). Great place for kids and extended family getaways. Nowhere up and down the North Shore is more than 30 minutes away (Newburyport, Lockport, Gloucester, etc.)--all very easily accessed via freeways. Downtown Boston, even in heavy traffic, is no more than a 40 minute drive away. Daily trips into Boston were very easy and stress-free.
We had a great time exploring the local Manchester-by-the-sea scenes: Captain Dusty's Ice Cream (a must), Manchester-by-the-book (a must for any bookworm--great local used bookstore), Singing Sand beach (highly recommend purchasing the local "resident" weekly parking and beach pass for $50--well worth it instead of the daily fee (purchase from City Hall (2 min drive from the house) during city office hours for the application and purchase--takes no more than 5 minutes).
Overall, Dana and Mary are wonderful hosts, extremely knowledgeable about the local customs and things to do, and wonderfully accommodating to your every need and expectation.
We enjoyed our stay immensely because the house had everything one would need for gracious living .The location to surrounding towns is also ideal because the easy access to 128. We will stay again when we head back to the north shore. The owners could not have been more nice in attending to our every need. Wonderful spot....
My family and I were honored to stay at this property for 6 weeks while relocating to the area. (We're a family of five with three small children and a golden retriever). Needless to say, we got to know the property, and it's owners, quite well! We would highly recommend this property for families looking to stay in the Manchester area (no brainer for National Members of Essex County Club). The home exudes a distinct charm and "family" feel. The grounds are fantastic and well groomed. We honestly can't say enough great things about our stay, the property, and the owners. Their care, attention and responsiveness made our stay all the more special.
You'll love this property and the owners will certainly make you feel right at home!
We could not have asked for anything more wonderful. Lovely old home elegantly decorated yet completely comfortable. Our hosts were gracious and most accommodating; we hated to leave.
I had a great time staying in this tasteful house. When I was in the house, it was spacious and organized, but I spent most of my time either on the beach or relaxing on the lawns. The beach was a bike ride away, and was quiet and clean. While I was visiting, there was a charming fair, which was nice to drop in on. Overall, a great spot to vacation, as long as you don't mind unwinding for a couple of days.
The house itself was tasteful and regal, but I would hardly know as I spend most of my time at the gorgeous beach, which was a quick ride away. The time not spent at the beach was either spent at the local ice cream place or relaxing on the lawns right outside the house. When I visited, there was a charming local fair that was amusing to drop in on. Overall, great quiet vacation spot, somewhere I would recommend to most everyone.
Situated between two of New England's most beautiful beaches- Singing Beach and Crane's Beach. Enjoy paddle boarding around Manchester-by-the Sea harbor and outer islands, boards available in the center of town, or try the scenic bike route around Cape Ann, out to Halibut Point State Park.
