Award-winning architecture: To paraphrase the jury representing the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects which selected the house for an Honor Award in 2000, the house is an elegant yet simple 1,600-square-foot example of American vernacular architecture. Set at the edge of a wildlife preserve with views of a distant moraine, the house has exposed structural framing and raised battens reminiscent of early 20th century farm buildings. French doors open to a large back porch, which looks out over fields, prairie, woodlot, wildlife preserve, and moraines. Interior flooring, cabinets, and furniture were custom designed for their specific location and built of cherry and oak harvested from the woodlot. Within the main room of the house, three walls of windows flood the interior with light. Vaulted ceilings in the main room create an feeling of openness. A massive cherry sofa, dining table, and wood stove anchor the living space. The furniture throughout the house was hand-crafted.
Love the house, especially the couch and swing. Things we did--bike ride, New Glarus Brewery, Taliesin and American Players Theater. All of the above are fun for all ages (above 12?) We put some onions from the garden on the grill--they were great. Also enjoyed lunch at Baumgarteners in Monroe. Discovered Blumers Root Beer-Yum!
We loved everything about our stay at Little Sugar River Farm. Prior to our arrival, Frank was responsive, flexible and accommodating. The house is perfect, cozy, architecturally interesting, clean, roomy. We especially enjoyed playing records from the large collection, picking a movie from the quality selection of VHS tapes, and sitting on the swing on the back porch. There were only two of us, but there was plenty of room for at least four more people. While there are two other buildings close to the house, it still felt private because we didn't really notice other people due to the way the house is situated. We cooked dinner and breakfast and had everything we needed.
As for activities, we borrowed Frank's bikes and took a ride to Monticello (maybe 4 miles each way). The bikes were fine for that length of trip, but if you want to go much farther, I'd consider bringing your own. We drove to New Glarus (15 mins) and visited the brewery to sample some beers on their huge patio. We also enjoyed picking fruit from the trees and bushes right outside the house.
This is a great place to get away from it all for a few days. (We only wish we could have stayed longer.) In my opinion, it's best for adults. Kids, at least young ones, may enjoy it, but may also not appreciate sitting on a porch swing the same way that adults do. But for us, it was perfect, and we hope to come back again.
Beautiful house in tranquil setting. Frank is an exceptional host, providing information on local activities and attractions, free bikes that we used on the nearby Little Sugar River and Badger State bike trails, and a good sense of humor that added to our stay. Thanks!
What a wonderful weekend! This was a planned get-away weekend for myself and (3) of my girlfriends. Frank was so kind and his property is beautiful. We've rated this our top get-away so far.....the beauty of the sunset from the porch swings, the incredible album library and turntable brought back many memories, the wood-burning stove created a cozy atmosphere. We had all intentions of hitting the Dining Room in town for a lovely dinner....but couldn't pry ourselves away from the house. We fell in love and enjoyed lots of good food we brought, and of course, wine and beer. We are definitely going back. Two of my girlfriends hit the biking trail and rode 20+ miles, while myself and my other girlfriend relaxed on the porch and walked around the property. We will definitely be visiting this awesome escape from city life!
Second visit made with my wife and we very much enjoyed our stay. The accommodations are clean, contemporary and inviting. Frank's presence is the perfect balance of being available but not intrusive. With his own hands he built much of the house and furnishings. The style and quality of his design and work are admirable. The property is located well outside of nearby towns but access is easy via scenic, non-rushed county roads. My wife enjoyed a lengthy bike ride on the Sugar River State Trail which discretely passes one-third of a mile from the front gate. While she was out, I took advantage of a well-stocked collection of books off the living room. Overall, a very pleasant visit and one we'd like to experience again.
Staying at Little Sugar River Farm tops the list for a relaxing vacation. The house is a beautiful architectural statement, and it comes with all the comforts of being at home. The only things you need to bring are your clothes, groceries and computer. Other than that, everything is there for you to enjoy. Even the bookshelves are filled with books, puzzles and a vinyl music library. There are also many magazines, area travel information and maps.
The house is orientated in a way that makes it very private, and you are right in the middle of the sights and sounds of nature. We stayed there in August so we were able to take full advantage of the comfy west-facing porch swing and watch the sunset each evening, which eventually turned into a firefly light show. It’s also a perfect quiet morning spot to have coffee and read.
Although being tucked into what might feel like the middle of nowhere, the farm is only a 10 to 30 minute drive, through rolling hills and very little traffic, to many interesting small towns with great art, good restaurants, grocery stores, the little Swiss town of New Glarus and the New Glarus Brewery. You will not be disappointed staying at the Little Sugar River Farm. It truly is a home away!
There is no other property like this in Southwest Wisconsin. If you're looking for an opportunity to unwind, enjoy beautiful scenery, in a rural setting, this is it. Lots of scenic driving, great places for shopping, sampling and eating are nearby.
Frank's passion and skill are showcased in great architecture, craftsmanship, and comfort. (iron foot rests on the porch swing for example). The natural light, built in lighting and handmade furniture add a level of comfort and enjoyment that makes it the unique weekend getaway.
We've already booked our 2nd Spring weekend and are talking about a Fall weekend and/or a week in during the Summer. This is a great find...and I'd like to keep it all to myself!
We are 2.5 hours north of Chicago and 40 minutes south of Madison in a very lovely, rural area. We are surrounded on 3 sides by wildlife refuge, so the guesthouse is secluded and peaceful. A short drive away are the charming villages of New Glarus, Monticello, and Monroe, with excellent restaurants, antique shops, galleries. Wonderful bike trails are next to the farm, and the quiet rural roads offer good road biking as well.
