About the property

Studio apartment on a beautiful 19th century block

This charming apartment is located on the 2nd floor of a late 19th century brownstone, on a classic, residential townhouse block in the historic Hamilton Heights neighborhood of West Harlem. The studio overlooks a beautiful, quiet, tree-lined street.

This is a private, self contained apartment - you are not sharing.

Lofty space combines modern touches with turn of the century details. Mid-century style furniture with a streamlined look provides style and comfort. Dining table seats 4 and the leather chaise lounge by the window is a perfect spot to nap or read. Full size comfy, tempur-pedic bed sleeps two. The high ceiling (11') and 2 large windows provide great light and a spacious feel. 2 dressers and a large closet provide plenty of space for all of your clothes and belongings. Bed linens and towels are provided for your stay.

Basic kitchen is equipped with all the essentials: french press coffee maker, microwave, toaster, blender, full set of pots and pans. If you find that you are missing something, please ask and i will try to accommodate your request.

Wifi and all utilities (heat, hot water, electricity) are included in the price. There is no television.

Please note that while this apartment is fully functional and kept very clean, it is not renovated (hence the lower price). If you require a newly renovated apartment please see my other listings.

Harlem Public, a neighborhood favorite for great pub food and atmosphere is just around the corner.

The Chipped Cup Cafe (coffee/pastries) is also less than one block away and has a lovely NYC style garden in the back.

Lovely Springtime Residence

  • 5 of 5

I spent three months living here this spring and loved it. I actually ended up staying in apartment #4, in the rear of the house, which faces south (sunshine!) and looks out over the lovely backyards of all of the houses and buildings on this and the neighboring streets.

This studio apartment has everything you need except air conditioning: kitchen equipment and tools, a tiny (everything is tiny in NYC) but immaculate tiled bathroom with a large shower, dresser drawers and a rack to hang clothes, lots of shelving, a dining room table with 4 chairs, and a comfortable living room area. The walls seems recently painted a lovely deep grey with white historic brownstone trim. The floors seem original - beautiful old-fashioned plank parque. Since NYC is well-known for rats and roaches, I have to comment that I saw not one pest inside the house the entire three months I was there.

Glenn, the owner, was super responsive to the small issues that came up, i.e. my short-lived trouble with wi-fi, and a sudden change in procedures around the disposal of garbage.

The neighborhood is delightful. It seems every other person has a dog. There are pubs, restaurants, and hipster coffee shops just around the corner on Broadway, along with multiple supermarkets and drop-off laundry establishments. A couple of doors down there is a community garden, Maggie's garden, tended to by volunteers with posted open hours. The Hudson River is a block and a half away and it's a short walk to Riverbank Park, an amazing recreational facility, well-utilized on the weekends.

The residents of the neighborhood seem very friendly and the pace in Harlem, in general, is much slower than the mid-town/downtown rush that proliferates in most of Manhattan.

Hamilton Heights is also home to many immigrants - many from the Domincan Republic, others from Africa. As a result, your choices for food cover a broad spectrum.

Overall, a great experience. I'd rent from Glenn again in a heartbeat!

Space and location are ok

  • 3 of 5

We stayed in the place for 8 nights. We know the neighborhood so we were happy to stay close to Harlem Public and all the new bars & restaurants that recently opened up on Broadway (btw, you need to check out Hamilton's Bakery for breakfast!)

We found our stay adequate although there are definitely improvements to be made as far as customer service.

Glenn was an excellent host. Helped out when i could not locate my keys. Was always a message or phone call away. The apartment is small but all the essentials are there. Great location. Safe neighbourhood. A short walk to express trains. Would definitely stay again.
