STOP READING NOW IF YOU THINK THIS WILL BE LIKE A HOLIDAY INN OR THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR! These are lovingly restored 150-ish year old historic cottages that are beautifully appointed with antiques and vintage linens, china and art. Our guests have a respect for that - most even a love for it, like us. You will be very well accommodated, as our property is one of the nicest of the 312 cottages in the MVCMA that takes guests, but it is NOT for everyone.
Number 72 is Dalla Nuvola (a/k/a the Front Cottage) and accommodates up to 6 people with 2 bedrooms on the second floor, one with a queen (flat screen TV and en-suite 1/2 bath), and the other with 2 twin beds. The first floor has a living room, with a Pottery Barn pull-out queen size sleeper, flatscreen TV and DVD player, and comfortable seating. There is also a dining room, fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, and full bath with washer and dryer. There is a hot and cold outdoor shower, air conditioning on the first and second floors, and WiFi throughout the cottage, private porch and garden.
Number 73 is La Pensione (a/k/a the Guest Cottage) and accommodates up to 4 people with 2 bedrooms on the second floor, one with a queen (flat screen TV and en-suite 1/2 bath) and one with a full bed. The first floor has an open plan with living (flat screen and DVD), dining, fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, and full bath with washer and dryer. There is a hot & cold outdoor shower, ceiling fans in the bedrooms and WiFi throughout the cottage, private porch and garden.
Beds have brand new mattresses and pillows. Beautifully crisp white vintage chenille bed covers and handmade quilts bridge the old with the new. Interiors are fresh and relaxing. There is a large Weber gas grill in the garden, shared by both our cottages, as well as tables with umbrellas to have outdoor meals.
Tenants usually supply their own sheets & pillow cases, towels and beach towels, and paper products. This year we are offering rental of sheets, pillowcases and bath towels for a nominal fee of $56.00 for the week, per cottage. Does not include beach towels. Speak to Janet about this linen rental. Your beds will be made up upon arrival should you decide to rent the linen.
Check-in at 3:00 PM/ Check-out at 10 AM. Unfortunately tenants may not bring any pets along and there is no smoking allowed inside the cottages; ashtrays are available for use outside. These cottages are only available for a limited number of weeks per season - so act fast and don't miss your chance to stay in a real historic Gingerbread House! Our community is on the National Historic Register.
Hi, I'm Janet. My husband, Bill and I, and our kids had rented on Martha's Vineyard for many years, always with the hope that someday we would have our own place. That became a reality in 2011 with the purchase of this very unique property. It was a diamond in the rough, a potential beauty - but frankly, when we bought it, it was a dump. The years of neglect were apparent. The front cottage at least had electricity and water and sewer! The back cottage had been treated like a great big shed and had no utilities hooked up. We have spent since 2011 completely expanding, restoring and upgrading the property - and falling more and more in love with these fabulous cottages.
The interiors were completed by 2013 and now each boosts 1 1/2 baths, hot & cold outdoor showers, cable & Wi-Fi, dishwashers and yes washers and dryers! (How is it a vacation if you have to go to a laundromat?) Let's just say, they have every amenity and are beautifully furnished and appointed - always keeping an eye on the vintage charm of what these were and continue to be. We are still working on some of the outside painting, but are 98% done with it now. The garden, once a dust bowl, now has flowering perennials and attracts birds to the two birdbaths. It's wonderful to sit outside under the umbrella tables, grill some lunch, and watch the world go by. A most relaxing venue, but with lots of exciting places to see just around the corner.
Every minute spent on these cottages has been and is worthwhile to us, and done with much love. That is what we are about, being the caretakers of these wonderful places which hopefully will be here another 150 years.
Janet & Bill Stanton purchased this cottage in 2011
Location, location, location. You just can't be in a better spot than this. Overlooking The Tabernacle, which is a National Historic Landmark, not only are we perfectly situated, but we also get front row seats (for free!) to all of the many events hosted there. We have seen world-class performers like Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Baby Face & more, while sitting on our own porch with a nice 'beverage.' We can walk anywhere from here too. Just a block outside "the Campground" (informal name for the MVCMA), is Circuit Avenue with numerous restaurants of all caliber, shops, coffee places, amusements, old-fashioned ice cream parlors, The Flying Horses carousel, and beaches - miles of beaches. There is even a brand new bowling alley/bar/restaurant in walking distance. Each cottage has a wonderful tenant book that I update each year. It contains photos of how these cottages looked when we bought them, takes you through the construction and restoration, as well as suggests our favorite places to eat, shop or have fun! There is also a complete schedule for the The Tabernacle events in that book - free family movie night, or maybe a flea market, a lecture, and the famous Wednesday night Sing-a-longs (sounds corny doesn't it, but it's actually quite a good time.) This is a very family-friendly place.
You can enjoy the quiet serenity of being within the Campground, yet you are minutes from the excitement of Circuit Avenue and the Harbor front. Sit on your porch in a rocker, or in the back courtyard, or under the umbrella tables; hear the ferry boat horns from the harbor. Engage in conversation with passers-by or just read that book you've been meaning to read, or play one of our board games. It's just such a wonderful throw back to when life was just a little slower, a little less complicated, and people actually talked to each other.
These two cottages were lovingly renovated. Located just off the tabernacle circle we were close enough to enjoy the activities and festivities but not so close as to be burdened by the crowds. The inside space was very comfortably appointed and while the kitchens were typically cottage small they had all the appliances and tools needed to cook comfortably.. Each cottage had its won outdoor shower always loved by the kids and the outdoor grill was large enough to grill everything everyone wanted. The front cottage had air conditioning in both the living room and one bedroom which was much appreciated. The owner called to confirm our arrival and be sure we had all we needed and was easily accessible throughout the rental process. If you are looking for a location close to the water and town but in a quiet and well-maintained area you can't go wrong here.
Nothing compares to the beauty and diversity of Martha's Vineyard. You will be hard pressed not to enjoy whatever you choose to do here - or do nothing - that is always an island option.
Great restaurants, shopping, coffee houses and pubs are within walking distance to you from our cottages. So are many of the wonderful beaches, including famous Inkwell Beach and Oak Bluffs Town Beach.
Ride bikes or mopeds, rent a car for a day around the island, it is 100 square miles after all. Go on an historic walking tour (self guided or guided). The all-island bus is within walking distance to the cottages and day passes are inexpensive and allow you to hop on and off the bus all day, all around the island - a great way to get an overview of where you'd like to spend even more time.
Each town on the island is individual and worthy of time spent there. But Oak Bluffs, well, that's home for us and it is eclectic, a little bit funky, a melding of diverse and interesting people with history and a look to preserving that. And within Oak Bluffs, the community of the Martha's Vineyard Camp-Meeting Association is a site to see all on its own - but don't just go see it - live there for a week or two - you will never forget the experience.
