Alex and Lara live in Washington DC but enjoy their family homes in London, England and Puebla, Mexico
lara Hawketts purchased this house in 2013
This property is close to our family and in a treasured location so close to the downtown area. When we return there our large family gather and enjoy the location and also the rooftop where you can always see fireworks and enjoy the amazing views!
We have invested time and money into the home installing a full water filtration system, flat screen TV, WIFI cable and beautiful local handmade furniture and antiques.
This house was perfect for our stay. It is very roomy, and the amenities are great. Outstanding views from the rooftop terrace and fantastic location close to the Plaza, restaurants, churches and Great Pyramid. Hard to imagine getting a better home rental in Cholula!
The roof top of this home is figuratively the icing on the cake! At night is where you see the most amazing views. The home is well appointed and more beautiful than pictures do justice. We came down to visit our son studying abroad in Puebla for the semester and had Thanksgiving for 10 very comfortably! What a jewel in a economically growing area!
We recently stayed at this beautiful home for 8 night and I cannot say enough about how great it is. Having emailed numerous times with Lara and spoken with Alex I found them warm and inviting answering my many questions. Chayo, a relative, met us early and even though we don’t speak Spanish nor she English it wasn’t a problem. She was so sweet and accommodating when we had a small problem (my husbands’ fault) I am very grateful for she and her husband. The house was very comfortable and is exactly as seen here. Beautiful. Being 2 blocks from the zocalo was wonderful. We ate at a number of restaurants and all were delicious. The location was great for a quick uber trip to Puebla where I would strongly recommend a guided walking tour of the historic downtown area. Wonderful! If you are thinking of staying at this beautiful home I would highly recommend you do so.
Everything was good until we left. The owner tried to contact me via text, voicemail and phone calls till 11pm the day we left. He was accusing us of causing damage to his property. I texted back when I was finally at home saying that I would contact him the next day as soon as I could to understand the issue (since I was not aware of myself or my party causing any damage), but he didn't answer nor tried to contact me again. The damage that supposedly happened was a couple of bricks broken in the roof ledge which was supposedly done by my 20-month-old daughter. I would rather pay for two bricks if I caused the damage than being harassed at 11pm after a long day of traveling internationally with a toddler. And furthermore, the approach to inquiring about the damage should have been more tactful and diplomatic. As I mentioned, we had no idea of any damage happening while there, and we weren't appreciative of being automatically accused.
Other than that the house was spacious and has almost everything that you need. The neighborhood is very loud but that is how the town is. We used a box fan to help drown out the noise. It was nice being in such good walking distance to the center of town. However, if you want to rent this property, just make sure you check it over for any existing damage in every place possible when you get there and before you leave.
We chose to stay in Cholula for it's small town walkability and charm. We wanted a three bedroom house with close proximity to the zocolo. The pictures of the house do not do it justice. It is even larger and more charming than the photos. And the huge roof deck gives you a complete 365 degree view of the surrounding area. The churches are lit up at night and Popo is visible clearly most mornings. Alex and Laura, the owners, and their local representative, Chayo, provided excellent customer service. They kept in contact through the house phone, and even arranged transport for us when we left. Alex offered advice on destinations and activities not to be missed. The house had all the amenities listed, and the wifi was perfect, even for streaming - a MUST for our grandson. We cooked our breakfasts and a few dinners, and found everything we needed to cook with. The water filtration system in the house meant we didn't have to buy bottled water! There are markets, farmers markets, restaurants, ATMs, ruins, churches, museums, and a lovely and active zocolo all within two to four blocks. Don't miss the street food at night - we loved the freshly made spicy potato chips, the corn (elote), the huge hamburgers, and the ice cream. We were a family group with ages 12 to 70. We ALL walked everywhere within Cholula and the neighboring towns - don't miss Container City and the cathedral in San Andreas Cholula. We ate at Ocho 30 across from the cathedral there. We easily caught the bus to Puebla for day trips on the main street, and the driver made change - nice as we didn't know the cost. The house was perfect for our extended family! We stayed one week. I would return again, and highly recommend this house. Staying in a smaller town where you can easily walk to everything, yet with easy transportation to larger cities, was perfect for us. Finally, be aware that firecrackers and public announcements are popular in Cholula. It may be charming for some, or require earplugs for others.
I rented this Cholula home in preparation for my sister's bridal shower and wedding at the Hacienda San Jose Actipan for her and some of our friends to stay and attend all the events. The house is everything that is described and much more. It truly has a rustic mexican feeling with lots of light and beautiful hand crafted decorations. It's a block away from downtown Cholula, which gave us great access to all the restaurants, bars, street food carts (which we visited on daily basis) and of course, the market, where we got all types of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables to cook in the beautiful kitchen.
Throughout our 10 day stay we were truly able to enjoy everything the house has to offer. We had breakfast and evening drinks at the roof terrace and the view was amazing! and we hosted brunch with the family a couple of times. Having a spacious dining and living room lends itself very well to host several of our relatives that would stop by so say hi to the 'bride to be' or just to rest in between stops.
The house is very spacious and although is in the middle of the city, it has a very natural and open feel.
We are definitely keeping this Cholula home in our 'favorites' list for trips to come for us and everyone we know. My sister's wedding was a very special time for our family, and being able to spend our time in such a beutiful home made the entire experience Perfect!!
Our Thanks to Lara for letting us enjoy her amazing home and to Rosario for her help and attention throughout our stay ;D
Our home is located in the heart of Cholula downtown, within walking distance of the great pyramid of Cholula, an Aztec temple, and the largest man-made pyramid in the world sits part buried in the ground with a beautiful Spanish church set on top.
The town is enchanting with its great food, craft shops full of Mexican art and hand made clothes by the Mixtecos (Mexican Indians). It is nominated as one of the Pueblos Magicos, Magical Villages Programme, part of an initiative led by Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism.
Cholula is only 20 minutes away from Puebla city, famous for the battle of Cinco de Mayo, now celebrated in the USA and Mexico as it marks the beginning of Mexican Independence. Puebla is steeped in Colonial history and one of the most beautiful cities in the country.
