Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1,950 square feet, sleeps 10 - close to Lake Michigan

Agape Leelanau Cottage is a beautiful, large, family cottage in Frankfort, Michigan, a lovely, small, and beachy tourist town located on Lake Michigan where the Betsie River empties into Lake Michigan.  This vacation rental home was added to the Frankfort vacation rental market in December, 2013 after several years of detailed renovations and remodeling by the Haan family.  This cottage provides a wonderful vacation environment for both large and small families and even multiple families and large groups.  It is located at 719 Leelanau Avenue in Frankfort, just a short 5 to 10 minute walk from beautiful downtown Frankfort, Lake Michigan, and Betsie Lake.  (It is exactly 0.6 miles from Frankfort Beach and Lake Michigan.)  It is also conveniently close to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Crystal Mountain Resort.  It is 1,950 square feet in size and has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.  It is fully furnished (including all sheets and bedding, dishes, and kitchen utensils) and it sleeps up to 10 comfortably.

The cottage has an historic Arts and Crafts design, which was popular in the U.S. between 1860 and 1910.  We want to research the history of the house further, but, at present, we do know that it was once a lodge for railroad workers and other boarders when several rail and car ferries operated out of Frankfort and Frankfort was a commercial railway shipping port on the Great Lakes.

The details of the home's design were ahead of its time though, with a very open floor plan and numerous large windows that supply wonderful natural lighting throughout the house, bringing in the full beauty of the brilliant northern Michigan sunshine.  The interior styling of the home is bright and uplifting, yet neutral, throughout the home.  All of the kitchen appliances (gas range, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker) have been replaced with new appliances within the last 5 years and the cottage even includes a large laundry room with a new front-load washer and dryer.  Both of the bathrooms have been extensively and beautifully remodeled, with the downstairs bathroom featuring a Jacuzzi bathtub - perfect for relaxing after a great day of exploring northern Michigan, particularly if this includes skiing or snowboarding at Crystal Mountain Resort.

The size and location of the cottage allows for a wonderful family (or extended family / friends) vacation exploring all that the northwest corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula has to offer - Lake Michigan, fantastic beaches, restaurants, shops, wineries, and Sleeping Bear Dunes.  Boating, hiking, bicycling, rollerblading, scenic drives, sunbathing on Lake Michigan beaches, shopping, and dining are all nearby.  The cottage is also only 45 minutes (35 miles) west of Traverse City if guests desire "bigger city" attractions like shopping malls.  We believe that this lovely cottage and its fantastic location will provide your family with a wonderful, fascinating, and unique vacation experience while visiting family or exploring all of the beauty that northwest Michigan has to offer.

What makes this house unique

There is a beautiful and historic craftsmanship to this property, with at least 5 different types of local wood used in its construction and decoration. The location is also outstanding with its close proximity to downtown Frankfort, Lake Michigan, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This cottage also has the ability to handle a large family as it even has a large dining table that seats 10. Furthermore, it provides handicapped / elderly access through a long entrance ramp at the back of the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our group of 4 adults really enjoyed our stay in this spacious home two blocks from the water and downtown Fremont. We were able to cook fabulous meals in the large kitchen, do our laundry, play games on the big dining room table, and walk to downtown and the harbor. What a great price on this rental in a great location. Check out the fish cleaning house on the harbor where locals bring their day's catch at 9 PM. Would highly recommend this rental."

Wonderful home, neighborhood and owners!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home for our family to visit! We (mom, dad, two kids and dog) stay in the area for one week of every month (for almost two years now) and this was the first time our kids said, "Wow! This is so great! It actually feels like our own home." The communications with management was excellent and they truly made our stay feel warm and welcoming. Travel can be stressful but this was a dream. Thank you!

Great Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house is just as the photographs indicate. It is cozy and comfortable and stocked with things you might forget - coffee filters, paper towels, spices, etc. We had a great girls' getaway weekend there. We each had our own bedroom and we were walking distance to downtown - where we visited the Oliver Art Center and Stormcloud Brewing Company. We walked the neighborhood and one of us went for a run that ended on the lake shore in time to see the beautiful sunset over the lake. Don't think that Frankfort is pleasant only during the summer months. We had a beautiful weekend in February, when the town was quieter and even more charming than during the summer "rush." We will definitely return to the Agape Leelaunau Cottage! Thanks Eric.

Beautiful weekend!

  • 4 of 5

Spent the weekend with family and this was the perfect spot to do it. House was clean, plenty of area to gather and great to all eat at the same table! Fall fest was very chilly but our weekend was great!

Thanks again for accommodating us.

Vacation with my Daughter and Grandkids

  • 4 of 5

The Agape Leelanau Cottage was a perfect place for a get-away with the grandkids. The location is great - very quiet street and so close to town and the beach. Point Betsie is just a 5 to 10 minute drive North and perfect for watching the sunset. There is a wonderful Mexican restaurant just 7 miles away. The house had plenty of bedrooms and beds. The kitchen was great and stocked as well. Overall, it was a wonderful vacation and very nice place to stay. We hope to come back!

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for the review and we are truly very glad that you enjoyed your stay! Hope to see you again in the future! Best wishes and God bless! PS - For potential guests reading this review, I believe that the "wonderful Mexican restaurant" that is referenced is The Roadhouse in Benzonia. We would strongly recommend it as well.

The biggest attractions in the area are Lake Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Frankfort has a great beach on Lake Michigan with beautiful sunsets. Frankfort is also very popular for fishing for salmon and lake trout on Lake Michigan. There are a number of charter boats in town that are available for hire.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is just north of Lake Michigan and provides incredible, breath-taking camping, hiking, and scenic drives.
