Charming three bedroom two bath family cottage with lovely views across Chilmark pond to the barrier beach and ocean beyond. The cottage comes with a boat with outboard to take you and family across Chilmark Pond to a private ocean beach that is easily the best ocean beach on the island. Swim in the surf or swim in the pond which is sheltered and wonderful for smaller children. Also available is a sunfish, canoe and kayak to enjoy on the pond. Master bedroom with queen bed and private bath. Comfortable twin bedroom and third bedroom with two bunk beds share the second bath. Also outdoor shower. Cottage is very private on four acres but near Chilmark Community Center and the fishing village of Menemsha. Open floor plan with kitchen, dining area and living room overlooking the large front deck. Washer and dryer. No smoking and no pets. Wifi equipped.
There aren't that many properties like this left on the Vineyard. It's what used to be referred to as a "camp": a simple, comfortable cottage with a huge fireplace at its center. While the cottage has been nicely updated with a spacious master bedroom with a very comfortable bed, the real draw here is the location: just a few hundred yards from the shore of Chilmark Pond.
The pond itself is lovely, pristine, and uncrowded: usually the only other creatures you'll encounter are waterfowl and fish. But it's what's beyond that's truly special: an absolutely world class ocean facing beach. The sand is white and smooth, the beach broad enough so there's plenty of room even at high tide, and most of all, since access is limited to those who have access to the pond, it's uncrowded (in fact, in mid-June, before the season really kicks in, it was entirely deserted most days. Not another person in sight).
One of the great things about the house is the boats provided, which is a rarity among island rentals. There's a motorboat (with fuel provided) that allows you to get to the barrier beach in a few minutes, and also let's you easily explore the whole pond. One of the oarlocks was broken when I was there (though still usable); the owner repaired it immediately when I let her know.
Beyond that, the house comes with everything you need to be comfortable: linens, towels, a washer/dryer, and above all, wonderful views from most rooms and the huge deck.
A great house that I hope to come back to some day.
