A Charming, Spacious, Rural, Relaxing Property

  • 5 of 5

Friends and family in my party enjoyed indoor cooking, outdoor grilling, and lots of board games (provided on site) in this beautiful and spacious rural property. The owner is genuinely invested in the positive experiences of her guests and we appreciated her helpful and timely communication from the time of reservation to the time of our departure. We had considered taking the kids in our party to the park down the street (5 minute drive, but not walkable) because we drove by it and the pool/rides looked great, but we were ultimately so happy to relax in and enjoy one another's company in the home that we went without the park. There's a dollar store just a few minutes away, and a Walmart and Giant Eagle nearby too. Guests are sure to enjoy their stay. Highly recommended!

Gave it a chance, but feel taken advantage of in hindsight

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this large house for our wedding weekend in Dover (despite the less-than-charitable reviews) because it was the only place we could find in the area that could sleep the 15 people in our wedding party + a few extra friends/family. We were willing to give it a chance and thought it would have some charm based on the pictures. Those who got real beds had a comfortable stay. However, to sleep more than 16 required using the pull-out couches in the basement which were a complete mess; no sheets, large fraction of springs missing, several pieces of garbage like a gogurt wrapper and food between the cushions. Luckily, a couple who were sleeping in one of the beds brought an extra pair of sheets that they used themselves while lending the sheets already on the bed to a sofa-dweller. The owner ended up deducting a significant amount of money from the security deposit for simply not putting the sheets back in the bedroom from which they came. First of all, there were no instructions indicating there would be a penalty for this. Second, we had already paid a hefty cleaning fee which one would expect to cover such "damages." The cleaning fee appears to be a joke, considering the condition of the sofas. Seems like the owner has lots of leverage since it is the only rental of its size in the area. Also no cancellations.

Owner's Response: Dear Jeff, Let me take this opportunity to clarify why the $60 was taken off your $400 security deposit. The checkout instructions clearly state that items must be put back in their original place, trash must be put outside and dishes washed. There is a maximum of 16 guests unless extra charges are paid to increase the maximum to 20. Your party had upwards of 20 staying there without paying the extra fees. You also left the place in disarray, with evidence of blankets and pillows in other rooms indicating many more guests than you paid for. These were not put back in the original rooms they were found in. Although we are the only vacation rental nearby, there are many hotels in our town. One would guess it's much harder to break the occupancy rules at a hotel , especially without paying the extra charges. We do charge a reasonable $200 cleaning fee and have 7 bedrooms, 9 beds with linens, 4 baths and 2 living rooms to clean when guests leave. I wish you would have called regarding the wrapper in the sofa and I would have been happy to send someone there to make it right. Of course, we would have also discovered the additional guests staying there had you notified us. You and your wife made a special trip to look over our place before you booked and you had a very favorable impression. We host hundreds of people every year and enjoy hearing about their experiences and peaceful time with family and friends. We have added security measures to insure that only paid guests stay at our vacation rental in the future.

Spacious, with a Few Quirks

  • 3 of 5

Overall, our stay in New Philadelphia was good. We really enjoyed taking our kids to Tuscora Park. As far as the house is concerned, here are a few things inquirers may find useful:

- There is a lot of space, so it is suitable for large parties. It housed our group of 6 adults and 5 children easily.

- As another reviewer wrote, it doesn't seem to be consistently occupied, so we had some issues with mustiness and dustiness.

- No wi-fi or laundry.

- We had a few house maintenance issues, mostly plumbing related.

Owner's Response: Hi Tyler, Thanks for letting me know about the low pressure in the kitchen sink, that faucet has been replaced. Naturally, most guests arrive for the weekend and we close the house up on days it's not being rented. I'm glad you enjoyed the spaciousness and the wooded surroundings. Tuscora Park is a must see ! Best Regards, Mary

Very roomy, clean house. Lots of bedrooms. Excellent outside activities. Firewood very nice.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the stay there very much. Five families lived there comfortably due to many rooms and beds available.

Kitchen had everything available for cooking. We enjoyed cooking and eating. What three days there eating, talking, laughing and enjoying together.

We also liked the camp fire with plenty fire wood available. Outside was large enough for all type of sports and gathering.

Thank the owner!

Jason

We were looking for a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle to spend some time together and visit family in the area. This looked perfect online and it was ! Plenty of room, great decor and Mary made us feel like part of her family. We'll book here again...soon.

Beautiful place, will stay again!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend getaway stay at this beautiful lodge. The rooms were very clean and we loved the privacy and quietness of the surrounding woods. We enjoyed sitting on the porch drinking wine and saw lots of wildlife. We will definitely stay again next time we are looking to come to this area!
