The Rustic Moose is a historical cabin nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is located at 1197 Braley Pond Rd. West Augusta, VA 24485
The Rustic Moose, formerly known as the Rockfish Cabin, is much more than a little three-bedroom stone house in the mountains of the Shenandoah Valley. In around 1960 two brothers, one a worker on the Southern Railway, the other a carpenter and builder by trade, decided to build a family hunting cabin. Being employed by the Southern Railway the brothers were able to purchase the decommissioned train station at Rockfish in Nelson County Virginia. The Lohr brothers dismantled the train station and transported the depot over the Blue Ridge Mountain to their land in West Augusta Virginia. There with the help of their sons the Lohr's completed the cabin around 1963.
It has been said that almost the entire cabin, with the exception of the stone came from the old train station. The stone was gathered by the cousins from the local streams and rivers.
The cabin features very comfortable living space with a great room with a wood burning stove, 1 master bedroom with king size log bed & wood burning stove, 1 bedroom with 2 twin log beds, 1 bedroom with a twin over full bunk bed, a completely renovated kitchen (with dishwasher) & bathroom & utility room with washer and dryer. The bathroom features a tub/shower combination with a truly unique pebble stone wall.
The Rustic Moose does not have central air conditioning, but with many cool nights in the summer and the stone exterior, the inside stays comfortably cool. We have a window unit AC in both upstairs bedrooms along with fans. In the master bedroom there is a separate heating and cooling unit that does provide air conditioning.
The water system in the cabin was updated in 2014 giving guests clean, safe, filtered well water. No need to bring bottled water. Bottle straight from the tap for delicious tasting cold water.
Enjoy all the outdoor has to offer with the George Washington National Forest at your back door. Stay close and sit around the firepit or venture off to hike many of the nearby trails. Don't forget your fishing pools as Braley Pond is just down the street.

Refundable damage/cleaning fee is $250. This fee is not something we intended on feeling the need to charge until we had our first disrespectful guest who completely made a mess in the cabin, left trash outside for the animals to get into, and stole some our belongings. Due to that experience we are now charging an upfront fee of $250 that we very much want to give back to every guest who takes care of cleaning up after themselves, removes trash, does not damage the property, and does not steal. The amount to be refunded is at the sole discretion of the property owners.
Steve and Jenna Von Moos are local Shenandoah Valley residents living just 45 minutes away from The Rustic Moose cabin.
Steve & Jenna Von Moos purchased this cabin in 2013
Steve and Jenna chose to buy this cabin after learning that it was for sale in January of 2013. Back in 2006 we spent 3 wonderful nights vacationing here when the cabin was open to the public for nightly rentals. The following year the cabin was sold to an individual who purchased it as his full time residence. We were disappointed as we had planned to return each year with our two children. When learning that the cabin was for sale in 2013, we quickly jumped on the opportunity to purchase it with the intentions of renovating the kitchen and bathroom and offering it once again to the public for nightly rentals.
The Rustic Moose, formerly known as the Rockfish Cabin, has had an internal, much needed face-lift.
The kitchen and bathroom were completely gutted and re-built. The kitchen features a refrigerator, microwave/convection oven, electric range/oven, and a dishwasher. The center island has bar seating for 6 people. All of the hardwood floors have been sanded and refinished. The utility room has a washer & dryer and sink.
The cabin is heated by oil through forced air vents, 2 wood stoves, and a newly installed Mitsubishi electric heating and cooling unit in the master bedroom. The master bedroom is the only room with air-condition, but with the stone siding the inside stays nice and cool.

This is a charming, spacious home with all every comfort for a weekend in the woods. It's near many trails, fishing spots and beautiful views. The cabin was quite comfortable. I wish we had more people with us to share the weekend. It would be perfect for a nice family gathering We enjoyed the fire pit, and roasting marshmallows in the living room wood burning stove.
The property was very well kept and had a nice cozy warm feeling inside. We spent the majority of the time sitting around the fire pit located 50ft away from a stream taking in the beautiful atmosphere. It was nice getting out of cell service and away from the daily noise of everyday traffic. We enjoyed ourselves and truly appreciate working with the owners. All informations was organized and clear. Thank you for a wonderful weekend and we look forward to renting in the future.
This was a comfortable cabin that had everything we needed for our stay. We loved the wood burning stoves in the living room and master bedroom, it warmed up the house on a cool rainy May weekend. The owners were great to work with.
Nice clean and quiet cabin-like home on the edge of the park. All items that were said to be provided were and the beds were extremely comfy too. Only warning for those that are the "connected" type, is there is no internet and phone reception is not in the area either. Yet that downside would not stop me from staying again. Thank you for sharing your home!
We had a wonderful time at the Rustic Moose. When we arrived and went inside, we were so excited to find that it was a cozy, comfortable and welcoming place to enjoy our weekend. We were especially excited when we went outside to find the perfect fire pit with places to sit around the fire, dry wood even though it had rained, a picnic table, and woods/a creek to explore! The drive to and from VMI was reasonable as well!
