1 Bedroom/1 Bath House In Rural Hamakua
Why Diane Higham chose Paauilo
We have lived on this property for almost 30 years. That is so hard to believe! It is true that time flies when you're having fun. We actually fell into this place kind of by accident, not knowing anything about the island when we moved here. Lucky us as we love living in Paauilo and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We've raised our children here and about 10 years ago built the cabin. We have been renting it but it has been open for a few months while we had different friends come and stay. We found that it made us so happy to have visitors enjoying Paauilo too that we decided to offer it as a vacation rental. We live on the 3 acres adjacent to the cabin property. Both places have their own private space as we built the cabin on the other side of a small macadamia nut orchard. This orchard needs a lot of work from us as it's aging and growing over, but in the meantime it provides lovely privacy.
What makes this House unique
We love Paauilo for many reasons. We love that when it's incredibly hot in the summer in Kona we can go home to some cooler air in the evening; that we can spend a morning or an afternoon at some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and that nearby Honokaa provides movies and restaurants when we don't want to cook. We love the outdoor beauty, the sunshine through the trees, the slowness of a walk on a country road - and the commute to work is only 15 minutes and without a single stoplight! Visiting friends tell us they really enjoy that we're between Kona and Hilo so they can go touring in either direction. I think that's a good point. This really is a big island and less driving is always good! People who have stayed in the cabin also tell us that it feels like a retreat from their regular life - quiet and peaceful. It helped them relax. That's how we feel about it too. A great place to come home to. It makes us really happy to have visitors in our cabin enjoying their own getaway in Hawaii. As for the house, we really hope you'll like it. We keep it very clean and well maintained. With a full kitchen, bath, bedroom and laundry it's a pretty cozy cabin.

Diane's Little House was a real home away from home
Perfect for those looking for peaceful quiet and off the beaten path. Clean and tidy it is the perfect retreat to come home to after a day of exploring. The location is convenient to both Hilo and Waimea and some beautiful beaches on the Kohala coast. Check out Mauna Kea beach and Spencer's beach for sure.
The rental is past the owners house in its own private setting well screened by the old orchard.
As we had expected we had some rain during our stay but often at night and it's a quick trip to the warm beaches on the west side.
We've had many rentals on Big Island and this is one of our favourites.
Diane is the perfect host we will definitely stay here again.
my long overdue honeymoon
the best ever!!!!!!!
Peaceful, little piece of heaven in Hawaii
Great little house for one person or a couple, Diane and Lynn are wonderful people! The house had everything we needed to be comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked with all of the necessities to cook a meal. It is a great place in the up country of Hawaii. Come stay and see for yourself!
Great little cottage on north shore of the Big Island
The "Little House" is a well equipped cottage in a quiet, secluded spot in the hills above Paau'ilo. Comfy bed, well equipped kitchen, and nice living area. Diane, our very thoughtful host, brought us some fresh eggs from her hens and pointed us to some fresh fruit that we could harvest from trees on the property. Highly recommended if you are looking to explore the north shore of the Big Island.
Pleasant country cottage
We had a nice stay at this compact country cottage, set in attractive woodland on the hillside. It's comfortable and well-equipped. Diane was very helpful with local information. Internet worked well but the TV was rather small for watching the provided movies and Netflix. Recommended.
Very well-kept, neat and clean.
A very private, quiet, enjoyable retreat. Lots of things to do if you like hiking and nature.
