This little house is small and simple with ceramic tile floors and open beamed ceilings. It's clean, bright and private. One bedroom with a queen bed, a full bath, complete kitchen and living room area provide a comfortable home away from home. There is also a laundry room with full sized washer & dryer. This house is perfect for a couple or a couple with a young child. Wake to the sounds of birds chattering & have your morning coffee outside watching the chickens & wild turkeys. WiFi, outdoor grill, beach chairs, coolers & some snorkel equipment are provided. Paauilo is still truly out of the busy city areas and offers a taste of old Hawaii.
We are at about the 2000' level on the slope of Mauna Kea. This is an area of small farms & country roads. You can walk for miles on these back roads. Our daytime temps are generally between 75 & 85 degrees. Though these past couple of years we have begun to experience some days in the 90's. Nighttime temps tend to be in the 60's with some summer nights perhaps edging towards 70. The cooler evenings definitely lend themselves to good sleeping temperatures. (Which we always enjoy after a long day in the sunshine at the beach.) We can get rain but can't really predict when that might be. That's not a problem for us as we like to have things growing around us, but do want you to know it can happen!
Paauilo is a great location to stay if you want to explore the Hamakua coast and anywhere on the northern side of the island. Honokaa and Waipio Valley are very close by. A scenic drive on Hwy 19 will take you to Hilo to the east, or Kamuela, Hawi and a choice of beautiful beaches to the west.
10-15 minutes away is the historic town of Honokaa, with restaurants, shopping, a small grocery store and a beautifully renovated movie theater that offers first run movies and live events. Honokaa has also recently started having a monthly 'First Friday'. The first Friday of every month the stores stay open late & there is live music, lots of great food and various other entertainment. It's a fun, local event that's definitely worth checking out if you're here on a First Friday night.
We also are lucky enough to have on site professional massages available in the cabin - unwind even more after a long day at the beach. This is a cozy house, a wonderful place to welcome you home after a day at the beach or sightseeing. It's a great place to tuck away and simply enjoy the beauty of rural Hawaii.
We have lived on this property for almost 30 years. That is so hard to believe! It is true that time flies when you're having fun. We actually fell into this place kind of by accident, not knowing anything about the island when we moved here. Lucky us as we love living in Paauilo and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We've raised our children here and about 10 years ago built the cabin. We have been renting it but it has been open for a few months while we had different friends come and stay. We found that it made us so happy to have visitors enjoying Paauilo too that we decided to offer it as a vacation rental. We live on the 3 acres adjacent to the cabin property. Both places have their own private space as we built the cabin on the other side of a small macadamia nut orchard. This orchard needs a lot of work from us as it's aging and growing over, but in the meantime it provides lovely privacy.
We love Paauilo for many reasons. We love that when it's incredibly hot in the summer in Kona we can go home to some cooler air in the evening; that we can spend a morning or an afternoon at some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and that nearby Honokaa provides movies and restaurants when we don't want to cook. We love the outdoor beauty, the sunshine through the trees, the slowness of a walk on a country road - and the commute to work is only 15 minutes and without a single stoplight! Visiting friends tell us they really enjoy that we're between Kona and Hilo so they can go touring in either direction. I think that's a good point. This really is a big island and less driving is always good! People who have stayed in the cabin also tell us that it feels like a retreat from their regular life - quiet and peaceful. It helped them relax. That's how we feel about it too. A great place to come home to. It makes us really happy to have visitors in our cabin enjoying their own getaway in Hawaii.
As for the house, we really hope you'll like it. We keep it very clean and well maintained. With a full kitchen, bath, bedroom and laundry it's a pretty cozy cabin.
We had a lovely time! The cabin is an adorable little place to stay. I was recovering from surgery so we were pleased There was such a nice selection of movies to watch! It is well furnished and a delight to stay in. The owner was so gracious and welcoming us. Thanks again
I was looking for a peaceful quiet off the beaten path place to stay on my Big Island trip and I found it!
Located on the upcountry Hamakua coast this perfectly appointed cabin was a great place to unwind and relax. Sun rain cool breezes...lush greenery...great walks and convenient for easy day trips on the Big Island. Diane was engaging friendly and so helpful when we spoke on the phone. I hope to come back and enjoy this great cabin again!
We spent two wonderful weeks at this fantastic cabin up the mountain slope in Paauilo. It is less a cabin, more a little cottage, with a nice living room/kitchen area, a well sized bathroom and a nice sized bedroom all under one roof. There are also private laundry facilities out back, and clothes dry quickly on the washing line, if you don't want to use the drier. I was very pleased with the quality of the house, everything was well maintained. It is definitely rural, we were visitied by wild turkeys one day and saw wild pigs from the porch another, but it is a short ten minute drive to Honokaa, which has several restaurants and a large supermarket - everything you might need. One possible issue is that Paaulio is a little remote - however, we found that being situated about half way between Hilo and the Kona coast was very useful - it was less than an hour drive to most places in the island. The volcano was a little far, perhaps.
We loved it, it was as nice as anywhere that I've stayed on the Big Island, and will certainly return when we want to stay in the north of the island. I would love to have a writers retreat here, perfect isolation when you need it, but easy access to supplies when you need them. It makes a great place for a romantic get-away.
My husband and I loved this cabin, we wish we could have stayed longer. It is clean, comfortable, and the surroundings are beautiful. Diane was friendly and gave us great information on fun things to do on the island. We loved " Henrietta " the hungry hen, she gave us so many laughs and great pictures.
My daughter and I spent three days with Diane at this lovely little cottage in the hills. Quiet and peaceful, very clean, charming character. Owners live on adjacent property but this newly constructed small house is just up the hill and out of sight, very private but the owners are right there if you need anything. Diane gave us some great tips on enjoying the area and after a day of drippy weather we had a couple of fantastic days of exploring the north east coast. Would not hesitate to recommend this place to my friends.
Easy to find with the owner's directions, we were delighted to discover this perfect little cabin high over the Hamakua Coast. We had everything we needed to prepare all of our meals there, and plenty of DVD's to entertain us in the evenings. Most importantly, it was extremely clean. During the day, we visited Waipio Valley, Laupahoehoe Beach Park, and in the evening we went to First Friday festivities in Honokaa. All were very close to our cabin and worth seeing and experiencing. We will definitely return to stay here.
