About Doug

I bought this cabin in 1999, and it was a little bit of a fixer upper at the time. Since then, it has been a labor of love to re-do the bathrooms, kitchen, windows, deck and decorate my place to feel very much like what I envision a lodge to look like - it even has a set of real moose antlers brought to me by a friend from Alaska. Each bedroom has it's own unique theme. I am a Canadian and this place is my way of feeling like I'm back home. I work in Silicon Valley and live in the bay area, and this is my families get away place. I plan to retire in this home down the road. It has been a wonderful place to create memories for my kids and my family. I truly believe Pine Mountain Lake is the best kept secret in the Sierras.

Doug purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Doug chose Yosemite Area

Years ago I used to organize a guys fishing trip and we traveled through Groveland each time on the way to the lake. At first I didn't even know PML was here, but I took a house building class, and the instructor talked about building a home here. Then I got interested. I wanted a place that was close enough to the bay area that I could drive up to on a Friday night after work, and had lots of things to do since my kids were young then - PML fit the bill and I started looking. I looked at many homes, but the second I entered this cabin, I turned to the realtor and said 'this is the one'. It had green shag carpeting and a harvest yellow kitchen, but it had great bones and all those things have now been replaced.

What makes this cabin unique

The main living area of the home has wooden paneling and large exposed beams with wooden tongue in groove ceilings throughout. It is a relatively large cabin (2100 ft.) yet has a warm and cozy feel with the floor to ceiling rock fireplace. As you look around you will notice new details every day. Many of the decorations have a story behind them.

Spacious yet cozy. Loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cabin to celebrate my 4 and 8 yo's birthdays. It accommodates a large party very easily. It is very well equipped with everything you might need to make your stay more comfortable. Very close to town and literally a 5 min walk to the Private Lake. What my kids loved the most was seeing the deer come up every morning to eat the leaves from the trees in the backyard or front of the cabin. Doug answered all my questions and even sent information about the activities to do around the town. He made the booking a very easy process. A 100% satisfied with everything.

Great House!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home!

It's location is perfect - 1 hour to the Yosemite Valley (about a half hour to the gate) and practically on a perfect lake! Go to the lake! We spent hours playing in the sand and swimming. The set up could not be better. And Groveland is the cutest little town.

The house is well stocked! I was amazed at everything I found in the kitchen. It was almost as good as cooking in my own house. We loved the pool and shuffle puck tables. The layout of the house was perfect for our family. And the kids had so much fun looking at all the decorations in the house. (We especially love the bear on the ceiling beam!)

Everything was clean and comfortable. A great home away from home. And the owner, Doug, is so kind and helpful - sharing so many hints about things to do, places to eat and see.

We will come back. We can't wait to come back. We're already planning our next trip!

Great family cabin

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd year at this cabin and our 3rd time renting in Pine Mountain Lake. This is a terrific cabin with lots of room for our family of 5, with kids ages 8, 9, and 11. They each loved having their own room. The cabin is clean, well-stocked with anything you might need for cooking, and the market nearby has just about everything. The pool table and shuffleboard in the cabin kept them from watching too much tv in their downtime :-) The lake is terrific and we went every day. The cabin is about 1 hour from the valley in Yosemite and makes a nice day trip. Check out Two Guys Pizza Pies and the Iron Door for good family restaurants nearby, although be prepared to wait awhile at the Iron Door. We will definitely be back to PML and will be renting from Doug again, who is very responsive and made our stay terrific as always.

Perfect vacation cabin for the whole family!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect 4th of July vacation for my whole family! Every room has creative cabin-themed decorations, adding to the feeling of a real vacation in a home away from home. The Pine Mountain Lake was beautiful and everything you need is in town. We made several day trips into Yosemite, but mainly enjoyed our days swimming in the lake and cooking dinners and playing pool and games at the house.

Walking distance to the lake, game room, relaxing front deck

  • 4 of 5

Recently enjoyed a four night stay at this property in Groveland. The visit went smoothly and though we didn't spend much time during the day in the area it was nice to be walking distance to the lake.

Getting into the community was easy as the owner had called ahead. One correction for the listing, the entry fee to for the community is $25 not $20, and they do accept card payment.

Accessing the house was simple and convenient with a lock code. The driveway is steep but not a problem in good weather. There is a nice size deck at the front of the house with tables, chairs and a small charcoal barbeque. The barbeque was quite dirty when we arrived and it would be better if the property offered a larger propane one. There is an open area at the back of the property where we didn't spend much time. There is enough distance with the neighbours for it not to feel too crowded.

Inside the property there is a game room with a pool table and shuffle board, which we enjoyed playing in the evenings. The bedrooms were a decent size and the kitchen was well equipped with utensils, pots, pans, spices and cleaning supplies. The washer and dryer were setup in one of the bedrooms and the only thing missing was dryer sheets.

The bathrooms were ok. For water conservation the owner supplies buckets to gather shower water and use for flushing toilets. I'm not sure that is comfortable for everyone. The shower heads are restricted so it is difficult to wash long hair with the low water flow. The bathrooms were also not the cleanest rooms in the house - small debris in the bath, probably from the window, and some hair etc around the bath and sinks. They weren't terrible.

Overall the stay was pleasant and I would recommend the property to others. I give it four stars instead of five for the minor cleaning issues I mentioned. The location in good, the owner was easy to deal with and the drive to Yosemite Valley is 50 mins to an hour if you leave early and avoid the traffic that can build up as the day goes on.

Perfect spot for a cozy family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! The house was set up perfectly for our family and had everything that we needed throughout our stay. The main marina beach is a close walk and we also explored other beaches in the area by car. We cooked meals every day in the kitchen and on the BBQ grill and the house was well prepped for our culinary endeavors with all the tools, bowls, measuring cups and spices that we could want. TV/DVD and pool table provided good entertainment and we even saw a deer of two come to visit the property. Everything was clean and in good working order - with a 2 year old it was great to be able to do laundry during our stay. Also, a good house if you have elderly people in your group - my grandparents were comfortable in the downstairs bedroom and did not have to climb any stairs. Doug was very helpful with directions and suggestions on activities - you can tell that he really takes pride in his home and providing a great experience to his renters! Thanks Doug!

Pine Mountain Lake main marina
Car: necessary

Pine Mountain Lake is a wonderful gated community in the Sierra foothills. There are numerous amenities including a golf course, lake, small airport, equestrian center, tennis courts, all close to Yosemite. The main marina is only a five minute walk from the cabin, and it has a beach, volleyball, small sail boat rentals, brand new beach side restaurant and picnic tables - tons to do! The town of Groveland is a small charming town with great shops and places to eat, and the famous Iron Door Saloon where you can try your luck at putting a dollar bill on the ceiling-ask the bartender. Live music and dancing Saturday nights! The country club restaurant has great food and a bar with a wonderful view overlooking the golf course and wooded mountains. Sunday brunch on the patio is a favorite.

Notes:
Driving directions and helpful hints: 1. On the PML map, look for Unit 8, lot 42. May be best to print and take this map with you 2. Only Verizon cell phones will work at the home. I have phones in the house for your unlimited long distance (within the US) use. The phone number is (209) 962-2000. 3. 4. Hint: If you are coming from the west along highway 120, a few miles after you drive over the bridge on Don Pedro reservoir, the road begins a rapid climb up to the forest just past where highway 49 splits off on the right at Moccasin. There are two options – old Priest Grade Road or new Priest Grade Road. All the locals use the old road (watch for the sign and exit the main road to the right) as it is 4 minutes vs. 10 minutes to the top. The old road is steep but safe, the new road is very windy and long. Turn off your AC or you may overheat going up – downshift to low gear coming down or your brakes may smoke (old road). Sounds worse than it is – really.
