About Bruce Johnson
Allow us to introduce ourselves. Our names are Alston and Bruce Johnson. Our Cottage has a very interesting history! The Cottage is historical in nature with a great story to share. The house is nestled on 2 acres of waterfront. Surrounded by old Virginia pines, 60 year old Magnolia trees and gorgeous foliage. Our Cottage was build by my Grandfather, General Denig for his loving wife in 1950. It has been restored to reflect the charm and character of that era. The simplicity of natural oak flooring, 2 fireplaces, high ceilings and extremely large picture windows makes this home unique. Water views from most every window and beautiful sunsets keep our guests coming back. General Denig's cottage is one of the last existing summer cottages left in the prestigious Birdneck Point.
Bruce Johnson purchased this House in 2012
Why Bruce Johnson chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Denig Cottage is peaceful, gracious, timeless and quaint. It has been in our family for years and has experienced much love, laughter and friendship.
What makes this House unique
Particularly for those who enjoy great scenery and quiet surroundings. Experience quiet all year around cottage living with Beautiful Water Views. We like Winter walks on the beach too with trips to the Edgar Casey Foundation to enjoy their no cost lectures and their spa offers to pamper yourself is a different experience. We enjoy having excellent access to the beaches, First Landing State Park, the boardwalk, stores, movie theatre, the aquarium and good restaurants; it is a fun place to visit all year around. Birdneck Point has a convenient community location which offers it all with access to the Chesapeake Bay inland coastal waterway and a five minute drive to the beach.

Beautiful neighborhood, comfy home, lots of room - family friendly!
Absolutely beautiful place! So close to everything at VA Beach, but in a quiet, lovely neighborhood. Everything you need is there - from beach chairs & towels to dishes to a streamer pot to steam the crabs we caught in the crab traps off the dock.
We had lots of rain - and adults & kids were still entertained with various card games, board games, books - everything is there! Sunny days had lots of things to do too - bikes w/ helmets, fishing stuff, croquet, corn hole, fire pit, grill, etc. And the little touches - cookies w/ welcome note, mints, everything labeled so well so things are easy to find - literally felt like home away from home!
We would definitely be happy to visit this location again. Thanks so much to Bruce & Alston for the wonderful experience.

Amazing ol world charm!
Step back into the days of a begone era in this former generals home on the Chesapeake Bay. A well stock larder that would rival any perfect homemaker. We had our son, daughter in law and two children join us for a weeks stay. Far enough away from downtown beach to be quiet and secluded. Close enough the kids were able to ride bikes to the beach. Enough board games to keep the kids entertained in the evening and Virginia Beach was kind enough to regale us with one of her thunder storms and heavy downpour! We plan to have family get togethers more often in VB and our first choice will be this stately home.
Thank you very much for your kind and heartfelt review of our family home. We enjoy sharing it with others and it makes us happy to know that families can take with them the gift of precious lifetime memories too.
Come again, we can tell you how to catch crabs too.
Sincerely, The Johnsons
We had a wonderful time! Truly enjoyed the house and surrounding areas. The owners leave personal touches for their guests which makes it more special. Had an enjoyable evening making s'mores around the backyard fire pit. Plenty of room for all ten of us. I would not hesitate to rent this property again. Kudos to the owners!
Beautiful home, and the owner very nice will try to help you
This was my first time I stayed in this home, look over the picture on HomeAway was give me a little bit idea but when I got there the house is larger and very beautifuf. The house have everything you need and label out very easy to find, the back yard was huge we spent most the time with our kids there. Very quiet place to relax and enjoy coffee every morning at the dock to watch the sun come up. If it rain we enjoy the coffee in the greenhouse, they also provide Crab box we catch few big one and the kid got to see the live crab that was awesome adventure for them. Would give this place 5 star and we will be back in the future, thanks for sharing the home with us and let us stay.
I'm glad that you and you family enjoyed our home. We will welcome you back anytime.
We would highly recommend this lovely house. It was comfortable, spacious and very clean.
We came with our 3 children (college and high school age) and my mother. It was the perfect location for being close to everything Virginia Beach has to offer, and for visiting with our relatives living nearby. Everything there was cozy and comfortable. My whole family thoroughly enjoyed it!
Fun family vacation spot
Wonderful home for large families! Great house for grandparents who have a hard time getting around-one level essentially. Also great fishing off the dock. Only complaint-NO WIFI at the house. Also read the contract carefully about the cleaning deposit. We thought cleaning was included with the rental price and the cleaning deposit was non refundable if a huge mess was left. However the cleaning deposit is to cover a cleaning service if you do not wish to clean the house when your vacation is over.
Perfect for boaters with a private dock, located in a quiet residential neighborhood, but close to beaches, restaurants and major highways. Crabbing and fishing from backyard.
