Designed by Los Angeles architect Tony Unruh, Casa Ohana seems to grow out of the volcanic bluff it sits upon. Its soaring, curved walls are at once wave and shell; clean lines and high ceilings resound open space and unexplored horizons.
The entry opens to a lanai with a ping-pong table, teak rockers and chaises, hammocks, and built-in lounges that wrap along the curved southern wall. The lanai overlooks a 40-foot lap pool and out to the beckoning Pacific Ocean beyond. Waves crashing over rocks and lava reefs define the amazing view.
From the entry, floating stairs lead up to a spacious living/dining area with 10-foot ceilings and wrap-around views of the ocean and southern coast. All the ocean-facing rooms on the main level feature handmade, 5-foot sliding-glass doors and huge window walls leading to outside decks. All wood used in Casa Ohana – joists, ceilings, stair treads, counters, windows, doors and screens – comes from hardwood trees harvested and milled locally and built by skilled craftsmen in a wood shop right on the property. Rocking chairs and an outdoor dining table on the balcony provide comfortable spaces to enjoy a book or dine al fresca while watching the sunset. The kitchen boasts hand-crafted cedar cabinets with marble and hardwood countertops and top-of-the-line GE appliances. The kitchen also offers a full-spectrum view of the ocean.
A half-flight of stairs leads up to three ocean-facing bedrooms and a fourth bedroom boasting beautiful mountain and ocean views. Two bedrooms have queen beds, one has a queen and a full, the other has two full beds. Each bedroom has open closets, ceiling fans, air conditioning and hardwood ceilings. Two full baths, a half-bath and laundry are also located on this level.
Up another half-flight of stairs are the master suite and office/media area. The bedroom boasts an absolutely gorgeous 220-degree view of the Playa Negra surf break and the North Pacific Guanacaste coast. Off the bedroom is a private bathroom with an open shower, large vessel sink and a hand-built master closet. Decks and built-in benches deliver spectacular ocean and sunset views from the private balcony.

We stumbled upon the land while vacationing, and decided to build the family beach house of our dreams.
The beauty and power of the ocean, the dynamic ebb and flow of the Playa Negra beach, the volcanic land, the generous and warm spirit of the Costa Rican people, the dozens of different surf breaks within a drive, the food, the yoga, and our great neighbors.
Casa Ohana is a dream home.
We have stayed in 4 homes now in Guanacaste over the past 4 years, and this home is by far the most beautiful and enjoyable. Simple and elegant, Ohana is conveniently close to everything you need. We loved it. Watching the serious surfing everyday from the porch was delightful and inspiring, pool is beautiful, ping pong on lanai, porches everywhere...I could go on and on. We had a delightful time.
This house and site are absolutely spectacular! Upon arrival at the end of the driveaway one sees this structure curving towards the ocean and compelling you to to discover it's mysteries further. Getting to the front entry the vistas draw you to the beach and the rocks that are framed by the gateway to an outdoor lanai that is seems set up to draw the breeze and take in the beauty of the lanscape beyond. The Curved stairs in the entry draw you up to a beautiful expansive living area where we had fun hanging out and onece again enjoyed the most amazing shoreline and perfect spot to look at the surf . Climbing further up the floating stairs were the bedrooms with their soaring ceilings yet cosy spaces that had views to both teh ocean and the mountains in the opposite directions. The rooms were completely light and airy. On the bed in the master suite, it felt as if you were sleeping on a raft in the ocean, the building seemed to dissapear and the waves beyond felt as if they were touchable. The sunsets were exquisite.
Wish I could stay forever.
