This house had some great qualities. The proximity to tunnels beach and the trailhead for the kalalau trail saved our experience here - we loved snorkeling at tunnels and hiked the trail on 2 different occasions! The house also has a nice deck and a great outdoor shower and tub which our 2-year-old loved. It was also nice that it had books and toys for our little one and lots of beach & snorkel equipment to use!
However, when we arrived it was sweltering hot and very stuffy - no air conditioning at all!! With all the fans in the house on it was still difficult to cool it off to a tolerable temperature. Luckily we found 2 portable air conditioning units, and although they were missing some pieces, my husband and father were able to engineer them enough to cool off 2 of the 3 bedrooms. I think the house could be greatly improved with working air conditioning and/or some proper blinds on the windows to block some of the afternoon heat. Additional screened windows/doors could help take advantage of any afternoon breeze.
The geckos and roosters were all part of the experience and my daughter loved them, the little white worms in the kitchen however were a bit too much!
Overall I would say this house was good if you plan to spend your days out adventuring and you are used to sleeping in a hot & humid climate. I think with a few improvements this would be the absolute perfect house to rent for a beach vacation!
We stayed at this house for 4 days. The house has a lot of room and a great kitchen. The kitchen had everything we needed and a gas grill on the lanai. The laundry room is full of beach equipment such as beach towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, snorkel equipment, beach umbrella, water shoes, coolers, a surf board, beach bag, lots of sand toys and sunscreen. You can walk to Tunnels Beach but we drove and since we went early we did not have a problem with parking. The house does not have air conditioning and gets a little warm during the day but it cooled off at night and there were plenty of fans. There were previous comments about the roosters crowing but there are roosters/chickens all over Kauai so there is no escape from them. The master bath outside shower was amazing with the best view of the mountains and jungle. There is also a shower with hot and cold water under the house for showering after the beach. The location is perfect for all of the north shore activities and Hanalei is about a 15 minute picturesque drive. We had a great time at this house and wish we could have stayed longer.
The grandparents, daughter, son, daughter-in-law, 2 grandkids ages 9 and 11 had a wonderful time! The house is very comfortable, has an extremely well equipped kitchen, and is in a great location.
All the beach equipment one could want . Will come back if we can.
Perfectly located at the far end of the north coast, and a short walk to several bustiful beaches, this is a perfect place for those who want to be a bit off the grid but desire very pleasant surroundings. TheHouse is wel-equipped, with a wonderful lanai that allows you to combine life at the shore with a view of the mountains.
We loved our stay in this modern, attractive, clean, well-equipped house. My wife is a great cook and the kitchen had everything she needed. Plus the propane grill on the lanai which we used quite often. It was great having a washer and dryer. Tons of beach stuff: 6 chairs, an umbrella, beach toys, many pairs of water shoes, numerous fins, masks, and snorkels. Even some beach bags to carry towels and drinks.
However, the best part was the location. We could walk to Tunnels Beach where the snorkeling is just amazing. Like swimming in an aquarium. I once saw about 50 fish in a school swimming all around me. We saw a different type each day. We saw a sea turtle about 2 feet in diameter, a couple of seals swimming by within five feet of the shoreline, and a couple of seals sleeping on the beach just around the point to the east. Check it out as they rest there quite often and even have a little roped off area with signs asking you not to disturb them.
I would say Tunnels is more like a 15 minute walk. You can get to a different beach in about 7 minutes, but it is worth the extra to go to Tunnels. We would drive our chairs and such down and either drop them off or park if there was a space. People come and go there so spaces open up. Most afternoons after 2:00 there were plenty of spaces. The beach was NEVER crowded.
We stayed two weeks: July 9th - 23rd, 2016. It did get pretty warm in the house sometimes. There is no air conditioning but there are plenty of fans. A couple of days we could have used air conditioning but I suspect it doesn't get that hot most of the year. We felt that a shade covering the high glass wall facing west would help keep the sun out in the afternoon and might help.
The roosters were a bit of a pain. I wore ear plugs at night. However, others in our family weren't bothered at all. During the day, it's kind of nice to hear them. They are all over Kauai so not particular to this location. We saw a couple of horses out back one day and there are cows nearby as well.
We absolutely LOVED the outdoor shower! You can see the mountains while showering and all the other lush vegetation.
The whole area just has a nice vibe. Very laid back. Very beautiful. Standing in the water at Tunnels and looking back at the beach, the sparkling blue water, the trees coming right up to the beach providing shade, the mountains in the background, and a huge waterfall, never ceased to give me the chills that I was actually in such a place
This home definitely fit with the Kauai vibe! Close to Tunnels beach, can easily accommodate six people without feeling like you're on top of each other, and the outdoor shower was great! The town of Hanalei was very charming, and only 10 minutes down the road. Thanks for sharing your home with us!
