About Maureen Crowder

I returned to my hometown of Courtenay from Victoria to be be near my large extended family and to enjoy a lifestyle which includes outdoor living - gardening, biking, swimming in the rivers & ocean as well as entertaining and relaxing in our porch and gardens. I am passionate about Latin, Ballroom and Salsa dancing with my husband and our wonderful dance community.

We have travelled in Europe and throughout Mexico with fantastic bookings at other VRBO properties. It is our great pleasure to host guests from all over Canada and the world in Courtenay at blueberry cottage - Vacation Rentals By Owner.

Maureen Crowder purchased this house in 2005

Why Maureen Crowder chose Comox Valley

blueberry cottage is located in the quiet Old Orchard neighbourhood of Courtenay, in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, BC. Located walking distance to Downtown, the Puntledge River, Lewis Park, the fabulous Riverway Trail along the Courtenay River and Comox Estuary and a short drive to beaches. The 30 minute paved road takes you up to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, mountain biking and hiking at Paradise Meadows.

It is possible to be without a car at blueberry cottage as it is located just 2 blocks to Downtown Courtenay and walking trails and a block from the The Broken Spoke for bike rental and repairs.

What makes this house unique

Our recommended restaurants...The Atlas Cafe, Union Street Grill, The Mad Chef, Locals and Martines. Downtown pubs to try are Gladstone Brewery, Cornerstone and Billy D's.

We love Georgia Straight Jazz nights on Thursdays at The Avalanche.

For groceries it's a short walk to Edible Island Health Food Store, Thrifty's Foods, Runge's European Deli, The Butcher's Block for local meats, deli & eggs and for sweets Hot Chocolates & Cakebread Bakery (& Gelato!). Superstore, Quality Foods, Costco and Driftwood Mall are all within 10 minute drive. For fresh local seafood from Portuguese Joe's take the stunning Comox Estuary drive on the route to Comox. For coffee and light meals we like The Hub, Zocalo's, Mud Sharks, Rhodos

Our fabulous Saturday Farmer's Market is located in The Native Sons Hall all winter and from April through October at the Fairgrounds on Headquarters Road. During summer the Market is also Downtown on Wednesdays. There are several wineries to explore in the surrounding areas including Coastal Black, Blue Moon and 40 Knots.

Shop at some of our favourite places in Downtown Courtenay - Laughing Oyster and Second Page Bookstores and The Tea Shop. Women's fashion favourites are Cherry Wine, and BE (Canadian Designers) and for lingerie Secret Drawers. There are now two great menswear shops downtown - Jim's Clothes Closet and Walker 24. Graham's Jewellers have been located by the big clock for decades and Impeccable Jewelry has opened.

For home decor shop Tab Imports, Rattan Plus, Red Living and Home & Garden Gate. Consignment Clothing, Antique & Vintage treasures can be found at Red Carpet Antique & Collectable Mini Mall on Comox Ave, Red Living on 5th and Courtenay Antiques on 4th Street.

Visit the Comox Valley Art Gallery and Gift Shop next to our beautiful Library and the Paeleantolgy Museum in the old brick post office. There is a great waterpark, playground and pool for the kids at Lewis Park Recreation Centre just a 10 minutes walk.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the G & T's upon arrival to finding everything (a well-stocked kitchen, numerous seating areas & comfortable beds and bedrooms), it has been a most enjoyable & relaxing treat for all of us. We will be definitely referring you to our friends in Vancouver and beyond.

Delightful in every way!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Blueberry Cottage for two and a half months. My husband and I felt like personal guests of the owners. The home, gardens and neighbors are delightful. Courtenay is a walkabout town - I could shop for groceries, dine, visit the exercise studio and hair salon easily on foot and walk along the river trail or attend the concerts in the park. The cottage is charming!

Location! Location! Location!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our two week stay in this well cared for older home. The charming cottage is located within walking distance to downtown Courtenay's amenities including shops, cafes and groceries. Situated in a pleasantly landscaped yard, screened by hedges for privacy, we enjoyed the quiet location. The spacious interior has ample room and adequate cookware to prepare meals, bake a cake or entertain guests. All the appliances work well and the bathroom's clawfoot tub is wonderful for relaxing after a busy day of sight seeing. It's a bonus to have laundry on premises. We have been traveling for 15 months, so appreciated the space to spread out awhile. Maureen is always helpful and concerned about her guests comfort. When the temperature dropped below freezing she called to make certain we were staying warm enough. For convenience to downtown Courtenay and local Farmer's Market, this is hard to beat. We highly recommend you give it a try when visiting in the area. If it's not available, we also have experienced the Chocolate Cottage and it is equally wonderful, just smaller.

Blueberry Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Blueberry Cottage was a delight. We were just visiting from 3 hours away and it felt like we had truly arrived in a gorgeous holiday destination. The cottage has absolutely everything we needed plus 3 outdoor spaces to lounge or dine in. We could walk downtown or to the fabulous Puntledge river for a swim. Maureen has created a beautiful, cozy, clean and tastefully decorated cottage which we can't wait to return to.

Blueberry Cottage is Adorable, Convenient and has a Lovely Host

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in the Blueberry Cottage, it is so charming and yet has enough space for five adults. You've done a wonderful job of decorating it and there was literally nothing we needed that we couldn't find. I loved all the little touches in every room! It was also great to be only two blocks away from the 5th Street shops and restaurants, and so close to grocery stores as well. The only thing I found challenging was the bath, I am a shower person and even though the original claw foot tub is completely beautiful it was a bit difficult to have a 'shower'.

Owner's Response: Thank you for being my guests! I take great pride in providing a comfortable holiday stay so I was delighted to hear that your group appreciated both my decorating and all the little details. Both blueberry cottage and chocolate cottage have unique locations walking distance to Downtown Courtenay, yet located in such peaceful neighbourhoods so close to all the beauty of nature in the Comox Valley. I tend the gardens and lawns at both cottages and depending on the season you will enjoy phlox, lilies, hydrangias, lilacs, azalias, bleeding hearts, geraniums, ferns, herbs and more! BBQ's are available in season approx April - Oct. At blueberry cottage we have added a shower to the vintage 6' clawfoot tub as a convenience for those who prefer to shower and at chocolate cottage there is a full modern bath and shower. Come again!

Beautiful Courtnaey at the cottage

  • 4 of 5

We spent the summer of 2013 at the cottage and really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is close to all amenities, downtown area and fabulous places to dine. While we were there we searched for our new home in the Comox Valley. The cottage was located centrally to all locations. The gardens were beautiful and very relaxing for outdoor entertaining, reading and eating the raspberries, blackberries and apples that grow on the property.

Lovely place to stay for new mom and baby!

  • 4 of 5

A fabulous place to stay for easy walking access to downtown Courtenay. As a new mom with a brand new baby I found the one-level floor plan ideal with easy access to kitchen, bathroom and laundry. The extra bedrooms for momma's helpers to stay are a definite bonus. Wonderful bathtub!

Maureen is great, responsive and very supportive of home birth and having new babies at Blueberry Cottage. I thoroughly enjoyed my 5 week stay.

Blueberry Cottage is a comfy place to be.

Owner's Response: I love my baby bookings! blueberry cottage was the original home for a family with 11 children - 10 of which were born at the cottage! Since starting our Vacation Home Rentals in 2005 I have had 20 families from outlaying areas as my guests for 3 to 5 weeks, while they await their due date and arrival of new baby.
