Our home is a 200+ year-old farmhouse, set in part of a hundred acre working dairy farm. It is in the section of Milltown called Ballyvirrane, and has a spectacular view out the front door of the Macgillycuddy Reeks and Ireland’s highest elevation, Carrauntoohill.

Milltown is a small village next to Killorglin, in County Kerry, southwest Ireland. Killarney, Tralee,

Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry are all approximately 20-30 minutes away. The house is a two hour drive from Shannon or Cork Airport and is only 20 minutes from Kerry Airport.

Milltown has pharmacies, hair salons, convenience stores, a Catholic church, hardware store, Chinese restaurant, butcher shop, Dentist and Doctor’s offices, petrol station, several pubs and riding stables around the corner from our house. Killorglin is a small city and has just about everything else you could possibly need. It has excellent gourmet restaurants as well as pubs, coffee shops, banks, sandwich shops, and a library.

There are several golf courses in the vicinity and fishing is also available nearby.

About Kathryn Shanahan

My husband and I fell in love with Ireland on our first trip here from the States, in 1997. In 1999 we found Spring Cottage and were lucky enough to purchase it in 2000. It had not been updated in many years, so we preserved the exterior and fully modernized the inside. It was a true labor of love.

We enjoy introducing Ireland to our friends and family and feel so blessed to have a home in Kerry.

Why Kathryn Shanahan chose Ireland

The traditional Irish cottage is iconic. While ours has a slate roof, not thatched, its over 220 years old and holds a lifetime of memories for the family that sold it to us. We are fortunate to have gotten to know them and learn a little of its history.

What makes this cottage unique

We always enjoy it when the cows are visible in the adjacent grazing fields. In the late summer and Fall, the blackberry bushes provide a delicious treat. You can lay in the hammock and watch the the colors change on the mountains. Its a truly peaceful retreat.

Cozy Country Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband, Tim, and I were fortunate to be able to stay at this sweet cottage for a week in the middle of this month. Believe it or not, we had 5 days of sunny weather! It was so nice outside that we ate dinner on the front lawn, which had an amazing mountain view, 4 evenings. There was shopping close by and also wonderful restaurants but the lovely weather beckoned us to stay outside and enjoy our country home rather then dine at a restaurant. The location is perfect for visiting the Glen of Dunloe, the Dingle Penninsula, and the Ring of Kerry, to name just a few of the amazing sights close by. The cottage was spacious and snug with all the comforts of home.

Owner's Response: Dear Jennie: You made our day! We are so glad that you enjoyed the house and that the weather cooperated. Ireland is gorgeous --and even more so, when the sun shines. If you ever return to Ireland, I hope you 'll look us up. Thanks again. Kathy

Delightful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with Spring Cottage from the moment we stepped inside. Besides being an excellent base for exploring the area, the cottage is charming, well-equipped, quiet, and comfortable. It was our little bit of the Irish countryside. And we appreciated the attention to detail, including finding milk, bread, butter and fresh eggs waiting for us in the fridge.

Absolutely loved it. Really felt like home.

  • 5 of 5

Of all the home away places I've stayed I would live at this one. From the moment we pulled up we were home. When I think of an Irish country cottage this is it. They had eggs bread and coffee as well as many other items of use.

Lovely cottage tucked away on a back road

  • 4 of 5

Make sure you know how to set your GPS with coordinates before you leave the airport! This is a lovely cottage in a pastoral setting. Our host was kind to leave us well stocked for our first day. We enjoyed our stay here very much and would certainly return be given the chance. We thought it was well situated for our tour of Dingle Peninsula and Ring of Kerry. Lovely!
