Ernest Hemingway stayed in this charming turn of the century home and it was the site of his first wedding reception. It has seven bedrooms and is perfect for a family reunion, wedding, or a family vacation. Although the significant areas of the kitchen and baths have been updated, it retains it's delightful atmosphere.
There is a private beach for the guests of Shangrila directly on Lake Charlevoix with a public boat launch nearby. Located near Petoskey, Boyne City, Charlevoix, and Mackinaw.

Came with a group of 18 friends to stay for a wedding in Lake Charlevoix. It was an awesome experience! Very close to the private beach, very clean when we got there and within a 10-15 minute drive from both Boyne City and Charlevoix. Sue was very gracious, coming over to make sure everything was okay and even making us a big plate of cookies when we arrived! The house was plenty big enough to sleep 18 people with the pull out couches. No issues what so ever, and would recommend this to any big group that wants a relaxing vacation in Northern Michigan (visit the General store at the end of the street for some awesome "tapas" when they are available, you won't regret it)
My family loved the home for our annual reunion. The house was lovely, in a quiet setting. Everything was relaxed and comfortable. We enjoyed the location, as it allowed us to explore many parts of Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. The owners were wonderful, and helpful with recommendations. One of the best features was the golf cart, which helped my father get to the lake comfortably. Would highly recommend.
Vacation home was very neat and clean. It is a historical house with a lot newer updates. I arranged a ski trip and lodging here for 10 people and there was plenty of space. We didn't use all of the bedrooms or beds. This was one of the coldest weekends of the year and the house was toasty and warm. We were even crazy enough to use the the nice grill on the deck during the frigid cold weather. The owner was very nice and stopped by on stir day morning to ensure everything was working out well for us.
An amazing time was had by all at Shangri La. We had 16 people and had plenty of space inside and out. We had a great time at the lake and spent a lot of time at the beach. Love the screened in porch. It is a very spacious gathering place and a great way to get fresh air without bugs. The history of the area is awesome. Just a short walk to the original general store and a book store that use to be a restaurant. The locals are very knowledgeable and eager to talk about Hemingway if that interests you. A great place to feel like you are part of a great history and like you have stepped back in time. The owner was awesome. We came into a pan of brownies as a welcome. Sue came and checked on us shortly after arrival and even though they are right next door, it's like they aren't there at all. If you need anything at all, she is there to help. The house is a short drive to Boyne City and close to Charlevoix and Petoskey. I would definitely recommend staying here and hope that someday we can return.
I just spent two days and two nights in this home with 16 young people (senior high) and 5 adults, and we had an absolute fantastic time. The home was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. The common areas were a little crowded with that many people, but that only added to the warmth and closeness. I guess if I had to describe it in one word it would be "cozy". The kids loved the place and they all want to return. The best part about this rental, however, is not the home but the owner. I often go through VRBO to find accommodations for groups of young and old and this is the best owner I have dealt with. She is very friendly, caring, and accommodating, and I am certain that she is that way with all her guests. The best part, though, was the way she encouraged us. Working with young people can be difficult and, in Susan, we found a homeowner who really urged us to continue our endeavors. We will be going back, probably often, and we can thank the owner for that.
My family of 16 people (6 different family units) fit comfortably in this spacious home. It was comfortable with many nice amenities (a great screened in porch, huge deck, games, beach chairs/towels). The rooms were cozy and decorated creatively in keeping with the period of the home. The owners were helpful and prompt with daily needs and recommendations for activities in the area. We all had a great time and would recommend it to anyone!
