Jamestown today:Beginning with the construction of the $26 million dual-pad, state-of-the-art Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena in 1990, private-public partnerships resulted in a number of revitalization projects in the downtown.
Close to 30 facades restorations of downtown buildings will be accomplished by the end of 2012 through public/private partnerships with JRC. The Alley Enhancement Program, another public/private partnership resulted in the enhancement of five alleyways in the downtown core, making them more attractive and safe for pedestrian traffic. In one of the alleys, JRC worked with Jamestown Community College and Jamestown High School to create a public art installation called Potters gallery. In 2010, JRC spearheaded the demolition of a deteriorated movie theater, the Wintergarden Theater, and converted the space into an attractive public downtown park.
Notable people from the Jamestown area include comedienne Lucille Ball; Natalie Merchant, Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson; naturalist Roger Tory Peterson; and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Products developed in Jamestown include the crescent wrench and automatic voting machines.
Jamestown was once called the 'Furniture Capital of the World' where people visited from all over the country to attend furniture expositions at the Furniture Mart, a building that still stands in the city and currently houses offices for a variety of companies.
