About Philip Marchand

I, Philip Marchand and my wife Jocelyn are the owners of the John Edwards House as of October 2012. My mother Peg Femino Camarda bought this house in 2005 and soon after started using it as a vacation rental to supplement her Bed and Breakfast that she ran next door. She opened The Henry Derby House bed and breakfast in 2001 in the house we grew up in after my sister and I moved out. My mother had a passion for business ventures and a joy for life like no one else. She put everything she had into growing her businesses and maintaining these two properties, and loved every minute of it. A lifelong Salem resident, my mother Peg had plenty of stories to share with guests at the B&B and travelers from all over loved hearing them. Although she worked harder than most people I know it never seemed like work for her, as she was always happy doing it. My grandfather's motto that he passed on to her was 'every day is a holiday' and she truly lived by those words. My wife and I decided to carry on my mother's dream and run her businesses after she passed away in 2012, as she had hoped to do for many more years. We recently converted the Henry Derby House into a full house vacation rental similar to the John Edwards House rental. I am also a full-time letter carrier at the Salem Post Office and have been employed there for over 10 years. Also a life long Salem resident I grew up in the Henry Derby House and lived there until I was 22. My wife Jocelyn, my son Xander and I live nearby and are always available for any of our guests needs.

Philip Marchand purchased this house in 2004

Why Philip Marchand chose Merrimack Valley & Essex County

My mother chose to make a vacation rental out of this property because it is right next to her bed and breakfast. She always loved this house and when our neighbors moved and put the house on the market she jumped at the chance to own it. She originally was going to move in and live their to be close to the B&B but later decided to try renting it as a vacation rental.

What makes this house unique

By staying at the John Edwards Vacation Rental you will enjoy being right in downtown Salem. The John Edwards House is a great place for families, or adults traveling together. It is truly your home away from home.

Great House, Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Our family needed a comfortable place to stay while attending a funeral in the Salem area. The house has lots of character and was perfect for our needs as it was able to accommodate multiple family members over several days. The location was perfect as we were able to walk to nearby grocery store and restaurants in a very scenic part of town. There was some street & construction noise, but that cannot be helped given the area density and where the house is located. Phil, the home owner, was always extremely responsive before and during our stay, which is a huge plus!! Would definitely stay again if returning to the area.

It was the best!!!! Phil met us when we arrived. He was so very pleasant and helpful. The house was very clean and had everything we could want. They stocked it with toilet paper, dish detergent, hand soap, laundry detergent. Towels and linens were also provided. All this was not expected but very appreciated. The charm of the house is perfect. The location of the home is perfect. Just steps away from the downtown area. One block over is the beautiful Chestnut Street. You must walk this street to see the beautiful homes. We felt very comfortable and were able to relax on our vacation. We hope to stay here again. Thank you Phil!!!

Highly recommended for a family stay

  • 5 of 5

Pleasant, comfortably furnished, historic home, accommodating and well-supplied--truly a home away with a full kitchen, laundry room, flat-screen TVs with a good selection of premium channels, and more. The John Edwards house is well-situated, in easy walking distance of the main Salem sites, restaurants, and entertainments, and is at the edge of the scenic McIntyre district and near Chestnut Street. The house has a lovely, shaded, backyard garden. The proprietors are friendly, responsive, and helpful. Highly recommended for a family stay in a gem of a city.

Convenient location but watch out!

  • 2 of 5

This is an historic home with all of the charming quirks one expects, in a great location for walking to the Salem tourist sites. There is a little market 2 blocks away around the corner for cooking essentials. The dishes, glasses and silverware were dirty and we had to run those through the dishwasher when we arrived. There were weevils in one of the drawers in the kitchen and we had to scrub the skillets in order to use them. The shower curtains all had six inches of mold on the bottom edge. Do not plan to use the closets, because the owners have piled trash and old TVs in those. There are admonitions in the welcome book to not pop the electrical circuits when you use a blow dryer, but no indication of which socket might be a good one to use. They also state that they will come reset the popped circuit at their convenience, and that is not an emergency to them. Cannot recommend this rental at all except for the great location.

Owner's Response: Hello Elizabeth, Thank you for the review of our home. I am very surprised to hear that everything was not clean when you arrived. We have a great cleaning staff that usually does a fantastic job cleaning the house. I've never heard of there being weevils in the house, I don't know why this was not brought to my attention during your stay. The dishes in the dishwasher may have been an oversight if the previous guests had loaded it and the cleaning staff did not know. I will see to it that a more thorough check of the house is made in the future. We do keep some items in the closets such as TV's, vacuum cleaners, and air conditioners and extra sheets and towels but I assure you they are not filled with trash. There is still plenty of room to hang clothes in the closets on the first and second floors. We do let all of our guests know that it is not uncommon to blow a circuit in the summer when all of the air conditioners are running and other electrical appliances are used all at the same time. This is an old house and does have some old wiring. It is usually not a problem because we live right next door and most of the time I can just walk over and flip the circuit breaker. I will also sometimes show our guests where the circuit box is in case this problem arises so they can flip it themselves. As I said it is only a problem in the summer because of the many air conditioners in the home. This home does not have central air so we have to use window units which draw a lot of electricity. I do give all of our guests my cell phone number so they can reach me at any time in case something like this happens. I am usually able to fix the problem immediately. I don't believe these guests had any such issues while they stayed in the house. Thank you for mentioning our great location, it truly is a perfect spot to stay in Salem! :) I do urge all of our future guests to please let me know of any issues with the house DURING your stay so I can do my best to fix them. I realize this is an old house and there will always be things to improve and fix but it is hard to stay on top of it when guests do not give me proper feedback. I always hate to find out that someone did not enjoy their stay a month after the fact from a review. I would much prefer to hear the bad news immediately so I can either fix the problem or try to make it up to our unhappy guests. Philip Marchand John Edwards House

Amazing weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I travel as much as we can for large group trips. This home allowed us to pull off our biggest trip yet!

The house was perfect!! It had everything we needed and plenty of room for everyone to hang out and relax.

The house was super close to everything we wanted to do in town and when we wanted to stay in we weren't on top of each other.

We used the whole house rental and had no complaints.

Phil (the owner) was so nice and accommodating. It was great having him so close by for when we needed him!

We are all so happy with our trip and the house that we can't wait to go back next year!
