Gorgeous Private Estate with Seasonal Waterfall, Panoramic Ocean View

Bedrooms 2
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft & sofabed, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Hamakua Green-house is a newly renovated, very clean, 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on 14 acres of rolling hills. It has a large lanai with commanding 180 degree panoramic ocean views from a 1700 foot elevation. It sits on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2.5 miles above Laupahoehoe town, on the scenic Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Go green in style in this meticulously maintained, luxury off-grid property with all new kitchen, appliances, beds, linens, dish-ware, and furniture. A custom built, solar powered, automatic gate assures your privacy and security.

Hamakua Green-house is a great base of operations to explore everything the Big Island has to offer. Sight-see the scenic Hamakua coast waterfalls, an erupting volcano at Volcanoes National Park, majestic Waipio valley, or white sandy beaches (on the Kona side of the island). Return home to your own private oasis on the mountain, to relax in the peaceful setting and endless ocean views, sipping local coffee, while you kick back and watch rainbows. Take a walk around the very private 14 acres, see the 43' seasonal waterfall located on the property and breath in the commanding 180 degree ocean views.

Newly remodeled, both bedrooms have extremely comfortable queen beds. The master has its own tub and shower, and the second bedroom has a brand new adjoining bathroom and shower. There is a sofabed in the living room if needed, and a loft with a twin sized blow-up mattress.

This luxury cottage is the perfect romanic getaway or family vacation retreat for discriminating travelers. Avoid the crowds and see all the beauty of the Big Island as if it were your own second home.

Please note that there is no television at the Hamakua Green-house, by design. We bring our laptop and DVDs, but enjoy being disconnected from television. There is an iPod docking station so bring your iPod/music. There is 3G cell phone reception for Verizon, ATT, and others at the house, and we often use USB-based cell modems with laptop computers while there. Please check with your provider about coverage.

We suggest staying at least a week to give yourself time to explore the entire Big Island and to relax at this wonderful property.

About Kristine or Rick

We love visiting our second home as a getaway from busy Honolulu. It is serene and the views are endless. The house sits on 14 very private acres and is accessable from a newly repaved road. Come and share our family getaway and experience the peace for yourself.

Kristine or Rick purchased this estate in 2009

Why Kristine or Rick chose Laupāhoehoe

We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and less rainfall than Hilo town. The property has an amazing 43' seasonal double waterfall. We are big believers in organic farming and are developing an orchard with future plans for coffee and/or tea.

We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.

What makes this estate unique

Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this home. All power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved the beautiful ocean views and quiet setting. What a great place to escape the busy life in Honolulu. The place was spotless and everything was so well kept. Thank you for sharing your second home with us.

My husband and I are already looking forward to coming back.

gorgeous off grid escape

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 days with our two young children and absolutely had a blast. The house was gorgeous and very well equipped. The property was beautiful and allowed plenty of room for our two boys to run around, pick bananas and lemons etc. Sunrises and sunsets are some of the most memorable we've seen on this island... we'll be back for sure!

Great value and a fantastic way to "get away from it all"!

  • 5 of 5

I chose this VRBO as it looked like a great place to have some peace and quiet as I worked on a project for work. Turned out to be PERFECT! Never slept so good, the view is obviously amazing, and I loved the chance to pretend I lived on the Big Island for a week. I had no trouble streaming Netflix and working plenty with my Verizon Aircard, was just as fast as WiFi at home. Popping into Hilo is easy and such a beautiful drive seems very quick. Great restaurant/bar/general store down in Papaaloa, about 10 mins away. No problems being off the grid, in fact, I didn't want to leave! Thanks and I will definitely want to come back!!!

The best!

  • 5 of 5

As I'm concerned this is as good as it gets! The house is lovely, spacious, bright, and beautifully decorated. The view is spectacular and the surrounding gardens and fields are lovely.. Of the many airbnb's/VBRO's I have stayed in (19 this year alone), this is the most peaceful and relaxing. This was my second visit and I hope to return many times. P.S. The off-site caretaker Darrin is a gem!

A beautiful, large property with a fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

The Hamakua Green House is definitely a “home away from home”. So many things remind us of our own house, however, we don’t have this spectacular property with this view and amazing weather. During our two months we had a little of everything, and who needs TV when you can sit and watch the clouds go by and listen to the birds, cows and frogs at night. We got to know the neighbors – 3 horses we named Star, Vanilla and Chocolate, who all liked their occasional carrot.

Papa’aloa Country store is a community hang-out, and we had several dinners with live music there. Everyone is friendly and easy to talk to.

We originally thought perhaps a two month stay would be too long, but we enjoyed every minute of it, and hope to be back again!

Fabulous Escape

  • 5 of 5

Not much more to add that hasn’t already been said. An absolutely beautiful hideaway that we hope to re visit in the future. Delicious fruit from the trees on the property and yes you will need the gas fireplace in winter months. The drive is very easy and the property is very well cared for. We arrived about an hour before check in not realizing the times and fortunately this was not an issue. Thank you again for the opportunity to spend time in your home as it really is a special place. Mahalo.

P.S. go to Donna’s cookies just up the road and do not miss a visit to the point for some amazing waves.
