Laupāhoehoe Estate Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft & sofabed, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Hamakua Green-house is a newly renovated, very clean, 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on 14 acres of rolling hills. It has a large lanai with commanding 180 degree panoramic ocean views from a 1700 foot elevation. It sits on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2.5 miles above Laupahoehoe town, on the scenic Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Go green in style in this meticulously maintained, luxury off-grid property with all new kitchen, appliances, beds, linens, dish-ware, and furniture. A custom built, solar powered, automatic gate assures your privacy and security.

Hamakua Green-house is a great base of operations to explore everything the Big Island has to offer. Sight-see the scenic Hamakua coast waterfalls, an erupting volcano at Volcanoes National Park, majestic Waipio valley, or white sandy beaches (on the Kona side of the island). Return home to your own private oasis on the mountain, to relax in the peaceful setting and endless ocean views, sipping local coffee, while you kick back and watch rainbows. Take a walk around the very private 14 acres, see the 43' seasonal waterfall located on the property and breath in the commanding 180 degree ocean views.

Newly remodeled, both bedrooms have extremely comfortable queen beds. The master has its own tub and shower, and the second bedroom has a brand new adjoining bathroom and shower. There is a sofabed in the living room if needed, and a loft with a twin sized blow-up mattress.

This luxury cottage is the perfect romanic getaway or family vacation retreat for discriminating travelers. Avoid the crowds and see all the beauty of the Big Island as if it were your own second home.

Please note that there is no television at the Hamakua Green-house, by design. We bring our laptop and DVDs, but enjoy being disconnected from television. There is an iPod docking station so bring your iPod/music. There is 3G cell phone reception for Verizon, ATT, and others at the house, and we often use USB-based cell modems with laptop computers while there. Please check with your provider about coverage.

We suggest staying at least a week to give yourself time to explore the entire Big Island and to relax at this wonderful property.

About Kristine or Rick

We love visiting our second home as a getaway from busy Honolulu. It is serene and the views are endless. The house sits on 14 very private acres and is accessable from a newly repaved road. Come and share our family getaway and experience the peace for yourself.

Kristine or Rick purchased this estate in 2009

Why Kristine or Rick chose Hamakua Coast

We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and less rainfall than Hilo town. The property has an amazing 43' seasonal double waterfall. We are big believers in organic farming and are developing an orchard with future plans for coffee and/or tea.

We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.

What makes this estate unique

Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this home. All power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved the beautiful ocean views and quiet setting. What a great place to escape the busy life in Honolulu. The place was spotless and everything was so well kept. Thank you for sharing your second home with us.

My husband and I are already looking forward to coming back.

A Little Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing estate. The owners are fantastic, very attentive. The house is impeccably kept with a beautiful open floor-plan design that spills out onto the expansive lanai. This home-away-from-home is so private and peaceful being situated on 14 acres of lush Hawaiian paradise. We enjoyed having a cup of tea/coffee on the lanai as we watched the sunrise over the ocean and in the evening there were so many stars it was unbelievable. The kitchen is outfitted with high quality cookware and stocked with several dry goods and spices that made cooking delicious meals as easy as if you were in your own kitchen back home. The counter-tops, which are made of a beautiful stone that catches the light and changes color, are new as well as the kitchen cabinets. The queen beds were super comfy. We also really appreciated having a washer and dryer available which enabled us to pack lighter. I highly recommend this rental. It’s the next best thing to owning your own property in Hawaii.

Wow!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in four places on this vacation and Kristine and Rick's home was our favorite. The view was spectacular, the home spacious, updated and clean. We had to make excuses to leave the house for a few hours rather than sit on the lanai. Darrin was friendly and helpful. We'll be back, I'm sure.

Being in the rainforest made it lush and green.

  • 5 of 5

The house was supplied with everything we needed. It was so nice to come home to every night and sit on the lanai and watch the stars. Located 3 miles up the hill from the highway it was so peaceful and serene. We were able to visit nearby waterfalls and zip line just miles away. I highly recommend this home

Absolutely gorgeous!

  • 5 of 5

The road up to this home makes you wonder if you will ever get there BUT, it is so worth it! The view from the lanai is breathtaking! Couldn't believe it... the home itself is perfect, roomy, very well cared for and equipped with everything you need. It is only 20 minutes to Honokaa and who could complain as the drive itself is gorgeous. lapahoehoe Beach Park is a few minutes up the road andis incredible. We got to the point where every day the return to the house was something we looked forward to. I will use this place for any overflow guests we have since we just bought a home in the area!

Staying at Hamakua Green-house was an exceptional treat!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Hamakua Green-house was an exceptional treat! The country setting surrounded by pastures with a view of the ocean from the covered porch was peaceful and relaxing. This clean, spacious off-the-grid house provided all the comforts of home from the open living rm, dining rm, and kitchen, to the comfortable beds in the roomy bedrms. We really enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen and grilling on the porch with awesome views. We also appreciated all the dry goods and supplies provided in the home, that you can’t load up your suitcase with when traveling among the islands. Within easy drives to the town of Hilo and many other places for sight seeing.

Some of our favs on the Big Island included: hikes to nearby Akaka Falls and the Waipio Valley with black sand beach, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat’l Park, scenic drive along Onomea Bay, watching surfers at Honoli ‘i Beach Park, Uncle Ed’s bakery, Woodshop Gallery & cafe, and shops in Honomu, dinners at Cafe Pesto and Ken’s House of Pancakes in Hilo, farmers mkt & Rainbow Jo’s shop in Hilo, Greenwell Coffee Farms tour & Annie’s Island Fresh Burgers in Kealakekua, snorkeling (went to Kahalu’u Beach Park-crowded & overused area, should have gone to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau or other location). There are many more places we wish we had had time to see, so a return visit would be wonderful!

Panoramic ocean and mountain views; secluded vacation home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the quiet, beautiful home during our stay in Laupahoehoe for a family reunion. Although we spent most of our days at the Laupahoehoe Point for meals and activities, it was relaxing to come "home" to this restful and comfortable place in the evenings. The house was nicely equipped with a great kitchen and the washer and dryer came in handy. The great view from the deck helped us to wind down from the days' activities and to better appreciate the beauty of this side of the island.
