Hamakua Green-house is a newly renovated, very clean, 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on 14 acres of rolling hills. It has a large lanai with commanding 180 degree panoramic ocean views from a 1700 foot elevation. It sits on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2.5 miles above Laupahoehoe town, on the scenic Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Go green in style in this meticulously maintained, luxury off-grid property with all new kitchen, appliances, beds, linens, dish-ware, and furniture. A custom built, solar powered, automatic gate assures your privacy and security.

Hamakua Green-house is a great base of operations to explore everything the Big Island has to offer. Sight-see the scenic Hamakua coast waterfalls, an erupting volcano at Volcanoes National Park, majestic Waipio valley, or white sandy beaches (on the Kona side of the island). Return home to your own private oasis on the mountain, to relax in the peaceful setting and endless ocean views, sipping local coffee, while you kick back and watch rainbows. Take a walk around the very private 14 acres, see the 43' seasonal waterfall located on the property and breath in the commanding 180 degree ocean views.

Newly remodeled, both bedrooms have extremely comfortable queen beds. The master has its own tub and shower, and the second bedroom has a brand new adjoining bathroom and shower. There is a sofabed in the living room if needed, and a loft with a twin sized blow-up mattress.

This luxury cottage is the perfect romanic getaway or family vacation retreat for discriminating travelers. Avoid the crowds and see all the beauty of the Big Island as if it were your own second home.

Please note that there is no television at the Hamakua Green-house, by design. We bring our laptop and DVDs, but enjoy being disconnected from television. There is an iPod docking station so bring your iPod/music. There is 3G cell phone reception for Verizon, ATT, and others at the house, and we often use USB-based cell modems with laptop computers while there. Please check with your provider about coverage.

We suggest staying at least a week to give yourself time to explore the entire Big Island and to relax at this wonderful property.

Why Kristine or Rick chose Hamakua Coast

We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and less rainfall than Hilo town. The property has an amazing 43' seasonal double waterfall. We are big believers in organic farming and are developing an orchard with future plans for coffee and/or tea.

We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.

What makes this estate unique

Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this home. All power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Very peaceful with amazing ocean view

We had the most amazing experience here. We spent 4th of July weekend here. It was very peaceful with almost 180 degree ocean view.

Beautiful, Pristine, Relaxing

We couldn't be happier. The home was very comfortable, relaxing with amazing views of the ocean and pastures. It was truly a slice of Hawaiian country.

The home was very nice appointed with cozy couches, dining table in an open floor plan. It made it easy to hang in the kitchen or on the lanai and able to stay connected to each other.

The rooms were very cozy. The beds were extremely comfortable with room to get around.

The grounds are amazingly manicured and naturalized. It felt really good knowing the power was solar generated and the water was from the mountain. Everything worked perfectly.

We look forward to coming back again to get immersed in the Hamakua Hospitality.

A beautiful and idyllic place to stay!!

To say that this house is off the grid, you wouldn't even know... it did not lack in comfort or luxury! Quite the opposite, it was immaculately clean and well-kept and provided more than everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The many windows, raised ceilings and open floor-plan make the house pleasantly bright and spacious so that the view of the sloping hillside and the ocean beyond, as well as the myriad birdsong and chirping frogs (depending on what time of day it was), could be enjoyed from within when we were not outside enjoying it from the covered lanai. Both bedrooms had their own bathroom (the walk-in shower was quite lovely!!) which was really nice as we were 2 couples and one child and it allowed for more space/privacy. However, we did not use the loft in the 2nd bedroom as it seemed more like a cubby-hole (perhaps if it had a window or was more of an open loft it would have been more appealing for someone to sleep there... as it was, we pulled the twin air mattress down to use as a bed for our 3-year-old since a trip to the bathroom down the steep ladder could've posed a problem!). After every excursion out, the pleasure of returning to the tranquility and comfort of the house and its idyllic surrounds made the relative remoteness of it worthwhile ('twas a bit of a drive to get to various places but we did not mind that in the least because just the 2-mile meandering country road to the highway was beautiful to take in each and every time!) . Absolutely no complaints, we wished we could have stayed longer and hope to return in the near future!! Highly recommended!
