Sitting on the rugged shore of Shelter Cove, with unparalleled coastal views, this is the SeaSide Splendor that your vacation calls for. Enjoy the sit-down ocean views from every angle in the open great room. View stunning sunsets from inside or step out onto the expansive deck for a broad, multifaceted experience of the oceanfront evening (hear the cries of seagulls and the barking response of local sea lions). Retire to the well-appointed kitchen to prepare your dinner with the fresh seafood that you caught on your chartered fishing trip this morning (don’t forget the abalone!). With three bedrooms, two and a half baths, plus the large ocean view bonus room, this vacation home provides plenty of space to savor your coastal getaway. The home sleeps 6-8 comfortably. We will consider extra guests. If your 4 legged family members don't want to stay home, talk to us. We occasionally consider well behaved, house trained pups for an extra cost. Let the SeaSide Splendor call you back to Shelter Cove.
Lovely accommandations...... Beautiful views...... Wonderful place for a family holiday . Two levels for privacy if you need it. Can't wait to go back!
Positives: beautiful home in an amazing location, fabulous views, comfortable and well stocked with everything needed for a relaxing get-a-way, the house was nicer than we expected it to be, comfortable beds and an overall homey feeling, ping pong table in the garage and a couple of bikes - the perfect place to de-stress for a few days
Negatives: tiny ants all over the kitchen, beautiful views but no ocean access - very dangerous shore, not a little kid-friendly home - avoid bringing children under 10 as there is not much they can do (and there are a lot of breakable things about), no window coverings in the master bedroom which wouldn't be a problem except that there is a neighbor with a view into the window who seems to enjoy it
To get to the house, you have to drive down a very windy, steep mountain road. The local drivers have no patience for visitors and drive dangerously fast. There are three wrecked cars along the road that have been left (presumably) as reminders of the dangers of speeding in this area. There are also a couple of crosses on the side of the road. Make sure to use low gear so that you don't lose your breaks. Bring all the groceries and supplies you'll need as there is no grocery store close by - it's about a 40 minute drive to the nearest town. Laundry soap is provided. Some basic baking supplies are provided - spices, sugar, and a few others. I've never seen so many hitchhikers in one area before - they are everywhere along the redwood highway and several of them were camping on the black sand beach. This left us with an uneasy feeling and was unexpected. The manager was very accommodating and the home is well cared for. Bring a good book and sit on the deck all day enjoying the view and the sound of the ocean. We saw whales spouting in the distance. Surprisingly, there weren't many birds or other animals. We did see a huge starfish clinging to a rock. I hope to return some day for another relaxing stay.
Beautiful house, beautiful views, the drive out was a little more than we expected (very windy). The house accommodated our 8 person party with a lot of room to spare. The beds were a little too soft for our liking; but other than that the house and rooms were very nice. The provided binoculars were wonderful for whale watching during the gorgeous sunset from the top deck. The kitchen is beautiful with updated appliances, and was stocked with the essentials for our trip. Which is actually very good because the closest actual grocery store is an hour away. The beach by the marina is very fun, the seals by the lighthouse are wonderful to watch, and the black sands beach (we re-named it the black Rock beach) has some beautiful rocks to look at. Over all we had a wonderful experience and did not want to leave by the end of our stay.
This is a very nice property and we may rent it again. We come to the cove every year and have stayed at other homes. Our only complaints are that we had to wait until after 5 to have access to the home. Then, after a very long day of driving, we had to make the beds! I have rented a lot of vacation homes all over the world and never had this experience.
Very clean, kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room very well stocked. Loved the layout of the house, plenty of room for the kids to play without bothering the adults. The view from upstairs is absolutely breathtaking. I would definitely stay here again.
We loved this house! It is right on the ocean and we left our windows open at night so we could hear the peaceful sound of the ocean. The house was sat up perfectly for comfort and entertainment. Each room had so much to see and enjoy with the décor. We loved the ping pong table and shuffle board. We would love to stay again.
Our oceanfront home, located on the California coast North of San Francisco and the wine country, offers unparalleled ocean views, stunning sunsets, and both the lulling sounds of ocean waves and the excitement of higher winter surf. Watch the whale migration from the deck (you can hear the whales exhale -- you are so close). The juxtaposition of relaxation and invigoration that accompanies a SeaSide view is inspirational.
For pilots wishing to fly their personal aircraft to Shelter Cove, there is an airstrip for day use.
The golfing enthusiast will enjoy a round of golf on Shelter Cove's golf links. This 9 hole, 33 par, 110-slope rating golf course begins at the Community Center at the south end of the run way and surrounds the air strip. You would be welcome, however, to begin your golf game on the 5th tee that is closer to our home -- just remember to pay your greens fee ($10 - honor system) when you reach the community center. The distance between holes ranges between 135 and 477 yards. Views of the ocean, mountains, and local flora and fauna are just a few distractions you might battle as you play. Currently this golf course is on the honor system ($10 per round).
Fishermen looking for an exciting day on the Pacific currently have local charter boat operations available to help you catch a fish the size you won't need to exaggerate to your friends.
Within a short walk you can tour the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse at the Mal Coombs Park, take the stairs down to search tide pools at low tide, watch Sea Lions at Seal Rock Picnic Area, or watch Abalone divers from the balcony or back yard in the ocean directly behind the house.
Enjoy a walk along Lower Pacific or adventure onto some of the new nature trails that the community has been blazing around the Cove.
Mountain Bike enthusiasts will be pleased with the recent addition of trails in the King's Range -- access points to which are just a brief drive back up the Shelter Cove Road.
Don't miss Black Sands Beach and the trailhead to the Lost Coast Trail. Stand on the beach and know that you are one of relatively few people in the world to see this view.
If you are here for multiple days, you might tear yourself away from the Cove for one of them in order to tour the Redwoods on the Avenue of the Giants, just a 45 minute drive away.
Finally, you are staying on the edge of the world. Turn off the outside lights at night and see stars as you might remember them from your childhood. They are gloriously bright. Use the telescope to explore the galaxy.
