Lovely property, but not as clean as it should have been

Five of us stayed in this lovely property for one week in Sept '14. The photos do it justice, the neighborhood is great too, but the owner was not responsive to our concerns about cleanliness and this put a pall over our stay and earned him a "Fair" instead of "Excellent" rating. When we arrived, we noticed there was no dish soap on hand, no written instructions to tell us how to operate the thermostat, how to unblock the sliding doors (no-grip bars wedged in place that took a knife to pry apart and lift out), where to find dishes/pots/pans (master bedroom closet, in labeled bins for kosher/non-kosher), or how to make coffee (a Krups model for cartridges). When he arrived to be paid in full for the week's rent, he seemed willing to help answer questions. He spent five minutes looking through all the cabinets/drawers, and was puzzled about the lack of dish soap or coffee cartridges, but didn't offer to supply any. And when I showed him examples of how some things weren't very clean, he insisted he'd had a cleaner the day before who "worked for 12 hours". Hmm, yet the soles of my feet were gray after walking on the stone floors the first day, there was toothpaste encrusted on the sink in the master bath, the outdoor patio table/chairs were covered with burst figs from the tree overhanging and there were, let us just say, certain signs that the toilets had been used by others. When the shower door leaked water onto the floor, a towel used to wipe it up came up with an edge of dark dust/dirt, along with the water. He didn't offer to bring the cleaner back, however, but did ask if I'd tried to clean the sink myself and helpfully told me the kitchen sponge could be used to clean the figs off the outdoor furniture. He also said he'd deduct the cost of dish soap if we bought some. I should have expected this response, as he (oddly) doesn't offer a rental contract but would sign one if I wanted to produce it for him(!). My Israeli friends told me the custom is to argue and insist on having him pay to have a cleaner return, to furnish dish soap for us, etc. and so telephoned him on our behalf. His response was "this isn't America." Too bad he has such a poor understanding of how good businesses are run. So, I'm offering this review to future interested renters so you are forewarned. I strongly encourage you to INSIST on a careful inspection of supplies and cleanliness before you fork over a dime when you check-in. To spend a week in a grubby house is no fun.
