Enter the magical world of Yurts and the High Peaks! Stay in our Ranier Yurt with hiking and snowshoeing right on the property and close access to the adventures and romance of the High Peaks region. Have breakfast gazing at Giant Mountain and then take a short climb to the upper property for views of Elizabethtown and many other peaks. You feel deep in the woods with only the sounds of nature to soothe you yet you're a mile from town. If you have never stayed in a Yurt you will be enchanted with living 'in the round' - windows are all around you and you peer up through the enormous dome to see the treetops, stars and moonlight. The Yurt stays warm and dry in any weather - from 30 below to hurricane winds. Lincoln Pond is 15 minutes away for lake swimming but there is a secret swimming hole right around the corner. Put your kayak in at Lake Champlain in Westport. Hospital, grocery store, drug store are 5 minutes away. Autumn and Winter are gorgeous.
More information on our Adirondack Yurt: The Yurt is heated with a large propane heater which together with the ceiling fan keeps the place warm in even the coldest Adirondack winters. In the summer the dome, french doors and windows open to cool the place down. Although the yurt is fully inspected and equipped with smoke alarms, smoking inside is ABSOLUTELY prohibited and will result in the loss of the security deposit. We have a full compliment of maps and guides for nearby hiking trails and we made a list of our favourite trails. The road up to the Yurt is approx 300' and is dirt but easily accessible with any car in the summer. In the winter a four-wheel vehicle is preferable. Our land is surrounded by 85 acres and we have permission to hike/snowshoe/ski on it. The views are incredible. We will NOT allow any parties that will hunt, snowmobile or drive motorized vehicles on the property. We have satellite TV free of charge and a large collection of movies at the property. There's a great firepit and endless wood for marshmallows.
The surrounding area: The High Peaks area of the Adirondacks is known as one of the most beatiful landscapes on the planet. Elizabethtown is uniquely situated 15 minutes east of Keene Valley and 15 minutes west of Lake Champlain. Hike one day and kayak the next. Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Whiteface Mountain are a short drive away. You can easily walk or ride a bike into town for groceries, hardwares or the drug store, pizza, and a great restaurant. In the surrounding villages of Westport, Essex, Keene Valley and Keene you'll find high-end eateries and shops, the famous Mountaineer Outdoor Store, a great gym and bakery, farmers markets, etc. Adventerous souls can take the ferry in Essex across the lake to Burlington, VT. Lincoln Pond is a great state park and only 10 minutes away. There, for a fee, you can spend the day at the beach, boating and swimming.
Other Policies: We are very selective about the friends and 'friends to be' that we allow to rent our Yurt. It is best as a retreat for a couple with children or two couples but no more than four people will feel comfortable here.
It was great staying at the yurt in Elizabethtown this past summer with my husband. It was a quiet, cozy, peaceful getaway. What we loved was having such close proximity to both the amazing hikes of the Adirondacks, and as well as easy access to fun towns. The yurt is in the heart of the High Peaks region and we went on several great day hikes. We loved our day trip to Burlington, including taking the ferry across Lake Champlain, especially at sunset. It's an easy walk into town, and there are amazing views just sitting on the front deck. It's an easy place to hang out, read and relax, as well as to have some wine and cheese while seeing the great mountain views. And the yurt is well-equipped with all the necessities which made it easy and comfortable to stay there. Ahh, a wonderful way to disconnect from the busy life to a simpler life.
Our first stay in a yurt was wonderful. This is a very comfortable property with everything we needed. The grill was greatly appreciated as well as the large outdoor space with a beautiful view! I would recommend a stay in any season other than high summer. The yurt held a lot of the daytime heat and was uncomfortable until way after dark. The window fan helped but not much. That being said, we enjoyed every day out hiking/ fishing/ kayaking and then relaxing dinners on the deck. I would definitely stay here again and have passed the word along to friends. Doug and Barbara were very helpful and I really appreciated the notebook about the yurt and all the local attractions.
We found the yurt to be full of natural lighting, spacious and thoughtfully layed-out. Inside was warm, safe and cozy regardless of the outside wintery elements. The natural surrounding areas were beautiful. The yurt is close to the High Peaks and Vermont.
Cooking/eating accommodations were very nice and provided us with everything we needed for small meal preparations. Sleeping areas were peaceful and comfortable. We found lots of good reading material for pleasure and traveling in the area.
Hope to visit again!
This place is HUGE! And honestly the pictures don't do it justice. It has all the amenities to feel comfortable but at the same time, still feels like you are "roughing" it in the wilderness. I recently stayed February long weekend with 3 avid campers (I'm not a camper). We all loved the place and each would gladly go back again. Doug the owner was very responsive to all inquiries and his instructions on how to access/use everything were very clear. The best part is the glass dome in the middle of the ceiling - every house should have one!
My boyfriend and I stayed here for one weekend in January and loved the place! It was my first time in a yurt and I was impressed with how spacious it was, yet how warm and cozy we were the whole time (I usually like to keep my place at 75°, but I was perfectly comfortable at 62°)! The clearing makes it great for stargazing at night and the windows look out on a gorgeous view of the mountains during the day. It felt very secluded, despite being two minutes away from a grocery store and a short drive to the Giant/RPR trailhead! Highly recommend this for couples and families :) We would definitely stay here again in any season!
Helpful hint: follow the driving instructions from owner - Google Maps led me astray
My first time in a Yurt and I was very impressed. A lot more room than I imagine. The personal touches like the album story of the yurt added to the sense made us feel very welcome and comfortable, like being wrapped in a warm blanket. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need to make meals and then some. Doug was very responsive to our questions and the notes placed throughout made it very easy to get acquainted with the place quickly. I look forward to staying again in different seasons.
The yurt was roomier than we thought, had fun hiking, short drive to Ausable Chasm, beautiful views, nice swimming hole - peaceful & quiet surroundings. Yurt was charming, clean and comfortable. Enjoyed sitting out by the fire & looking at the stars.
