Fully accessorized, beautiful suburban space consists of two large bedrooms (queen sized bed in one; double in the other) with sitting area, private full bath and kitchenette; access to working pottery studio. Includes transportation to/from train station (Grand Central, NYC is 70 minute ride); easy walk to Fairfield University; 5 miles to GE headquarters. The suite comes fully furnished and decorated and is the upstairs of our home. Space and amenities for your exclusive use include: full bathroom, sitting/living area, microwave oven, small refrigerator, Keurig coffee maker, toaster, clothes washer / dryer, iron / ironing board, hair dryer, DVD player, 3 CATVs (two in one bedroom and one in the other; one also equipped with Apple TV for movie access), wireless Internet access and USB charging plugs (with international combinations). In addition to being an easy train ride from NYC, an across-the-street walk to Fairfield University and a 5 mile drive to GE Headquarters, this space comes with access to a working pottery studio on the grounds (for visiting, playing or serious work). In combination, these features make for a truly unique listing for 2 to 4 adults and room for a young child; 'Pack N Play' available. In addition to 584 square feet of private space, you'll enjoy shared access to a dining area, a large, well-furnished kitchen and the living room. The space is private enough that if the guests want total privacy, they can have it and not feel cramped. On the other hand, we enjoy meeting people and want them to feel welcome in our home, so we'll interact as they wish. Access to the pottery studio is by arrangement with the potter, but she loves to show off her space and welcomes people that want to explore, learn, play or even work seriously (for the latter, a studio fee may apply) at making things from clay!
My wife Lois and I have lived in this home since 1987, having built a ceramic studio in the back for Lois who is a studio potter (I help her with things, but she's the star!). I'm a businessman who owns Barker Consulting Partners. Lois and I are active in our local church, mentoring young couples about to get married. During the summer, we love to sit at the Fairfield Beach and eat our salads from Chipotle and in the winter, slide down nearby Round Hill with our grandchildren. When we're not with our grandchildren, we mostly we talk about Lois's latest art project in her studio. We cannot say we are extroverts, but we like meeting people and hearing their stories (if they are interested in telling them). We've traveled extensively and love to talk about international locations (I've done business in 24 countries around the world and have visited 38). We're in our 60's but still pretty active: Lois in the studio and I'm approaching my 22nd year of snowboarding. Come stay with us!
William Barker purchased this house in 1987
When Lois first walked into this house, she knew it was to be hers, despite my asking her not to fall in love with any house since that would make purchase negotiations harder! Having moved 14 times in the first 14 years of our married lives together, Lois and I have not moved from this house (or even considered it). We raised our daughter in this home and now we have the opportunity to share it with new friends -- and we love it!
It is not often that one can legitimately say there is a unique aspect to this house, but there is here: we have a working pottery studio attached and we welcome visitors to observe, try their hand casually, or even work out an arrangement to work here seriously.
The home is very comfortable, clean, and the beds and linens are of the highest quality. I would definitely return and recommend to family and friends.
I actually switched to the downstairs studio apartment at the last minute, as it was a convenient switch for me and the property owners. I found the studio apartment to be extremely comfortable, with a great bed and lots of comfortable places to sit. The space was more than ample for me, as a single, and would have been just as comfortable for a couple. Although there is room for more to sleep in the apartment, I would find it crowded with more than 2 adults. I personally enjoyed the lovely backyard, with the patio and table for six. I would sit out there in the morning and enjoy the quiet and the large trees. There was a very nice gas grill available, although I did not choose to use it. The kitchen was small but adequate, and I found all the utensils I needed. There were nice little touches like spa robes and towels, snacks and kuerig pods .
The owners were very helpful and accommodating, even offering rides to the beach, which is free; but parking is expensive for non residents. They also offered beach chairs and umbrella as well. Definitely take advantage of the offer to see the wonderful pottery studio where Lois works. She makes very beautiful pieces.
The only reason I did not give this 5 stars was because the screen door and a few of the casement windows did not work easily. The sliding screen door often fell off its track, and 3 of the casement windows I opened had to be closed by hand, as the crank ceased to work. Everything else I used worked perfectly. Definitely superior to any hotel or motel in the area and worth the price.
Our room was extremely clean and well appointed. The owners couldn't have been more helpful. We were very impressed with all aspects.
We were very pleased with our stay. Everything was exactly as pictured in the photos. The upstairs suite was clean and bright with lots of space and very nice decor. AC units were great - we didn't even need them some evenings. Strong WiFi signal.
We chose to sleep in the "smaller" of the two rooms as it had fewer windows and I like it dark when I sleep. The bed was so comfy - had a memory foam topper on it that I really enjoyed.
Ample water pressure and hot water in a roomy bathroom that allowed for 2 to get ready to go in the mornings. I really appreciated having access to the washer and dryer to clean clothes and wash towels during our week long stay. We were provided with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, milk and bread, along with a selection of K-cups - to start our day. They really thought of everything one might need.
Plenty of room to park and very easy to find. In a nice neighborhood, which was quiet since the college nearby was not in session.
We had just gotten in our car one morning when a group of 8 wild turkeys strolled across the street and spent a few minutes checking out the front yard before moving on - quite a surprise!
An on ramp to I- 95 is close ( a mile or so away , so you don't hear traffic). Lots of restaurants in town. We enjoyed the craft beer selection and food at Local Kitchen - located close to the I-95 access.
We were out a lot, visiting family, so we only saw our hosts once or twice. They were friendly and helpful and easy to reach if needed.
I will absolutely check to see if either of their rentals are available on our next trip to CT. Their home was much more comfortable than staying in a hotel.
This property worked out perfectly for us, we had some family we were visiting closeby and wanted our own space. The beds were super comfortable and the sheets and towels were the highest quality. The hosts were so accommodating and friendly and even stocked a little fridge for us with some breakfast foods and I loved the little kerig coffee maker and coffee they provided. They thought of lots of little things to make our stay nice and were always available for questions or if we needed something. I highly recommend this place!
Bill and Lois are such wonderful hosts--we had a perfect stay in a beautiful, comfortable house in leafy Fairfield, CT.
