About Jim and Lisa Franceschini

We have been mountain lovers since we married 25 years ago and are realizing our dream of building and renting mountain cabins in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Last year we met a gifted and extraordinarily talented builder who has built three cabins for us. The Barred Owl Lodge is the 2nd of these cabins and we feel truly blessed to call it ours and are excited to be able to share it with others!

Jim and Lisa Franceschini purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Jim and Lisa Franceschini chose Stanley

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your cabin was lovely. We are entering a new chapter with our blended family. The "kids" are now young adults and it was really nice being able to meet up with my husbands 2 kids who live in Roanoke, Va and have all 3 kids together, spending time and making really great memories. Your home was warm, inviting and filled with everything necessary for a great mini vacation. Thanks for the wonderful experience. At some point in the future, we will be back : )

Magnificent Home

  • 5 of 5

Hi, we just returned from an amazing trip to the Shenandoah Valley. And we could not have selected a better home, than the Barred Owl Lodge. It is beyond what we expected ! A beautiful log home, on beautiful property, on top of a hill, with a lot of privacy, in the middle of nature (with other homes close by). Coming off the mountain, the views are spectacular.

The home is so new, and fresh, filled with amenities, and Lisa's special touches (loved all the owl decor !). We loved the fire pit, relaxing on the porch, and taking in all the sounds of nature.. One day we decided to stay back and enjoy the home and property. If you're thinking of renting this home, you will not be disappointed. This was the nicest home that I've ever stayed in on vacation.. Clean & quiet

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is new and clean. All amenities were generously provided. Easy access to attractions in Luray; a little bit of a drive to Shenandoah National Park.

My family and I stayed the weekend for the Shenandoah Half Marathon and had a great time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words and for choosing us for your getaway! You were wonderful guests and we hope to see you again. For those of you who are looking to come to Shenandoah National Park, this property is closest to the Thornton Gap Entrance (about 15 miles...a beautiful drive to and through the Park).

We loved the Barred Owl Lodge. The place was spotless and the kitchen had all the amenities that we wanted. It was such a relaxing place after a full day of hiking. Unfortunately the hot tub is right outside the bedroom, so when it kicked on, it was loud and woke us up. Thanks for the detailed instructions on the hot tub, otherwise I would've thought there was something wrong with it (I didn't know it would periodically kick on). I was a bit surprised that we were responsible for bringing the trash to the landfill and for stripping the beds when we left. At least we had the option of texting the housekeeper to pick up the trash. Considering the price we paid per night, one would think those things would be taken care of. Overall we did have a great stay in a very pretty home, beautifully decorated and incredibly clean.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, Victoria, and we're glad you enjoyed the home and the area! We ask guests to take a moment to strip the beds so that we know which linens are dirty; we regret that you found that to be inconvenient. And the trash... there is no trash pick-up in this rural area which is why we offer the option for our guests to take it with them or text the housekeeper to pick it up. She's always happy to do so, so I'm glad you took advantage of that option. We will look forward to seeing you again!

Perfectly Located and Appointed Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Barred Owl Lodge, and both were wonderful. The Lodge is perfectly located within a short drive of all of the fantastic offerings of the Shenandoah Valley. Nearby Luray has good dining options and lots of activities for kids and adults. In this last week, we fed animals like a tiger and lemur and pet a porcupine at the Luray Zoo, saw the town's great fireworks, tromped around in a creek, watched a great blue heron hunt and catch fish only 5 feet from where we stood, fed ducks at the Greenway, went on nature walks in the mountains where we saw deer, bears and a Goliath beetle, saw a local college league baseball game, went to museums, visited wineries, shopped for art, went peach picking at an orchard, and enjoyed feasting on items purchased at three different farmers' markets. That's not to mention our great hotdog roasts and s'mores made on the fire at the Lodge. The home itself is immaculately kept and very well appointed, with everything you could need in terms of towels, bedding, and kitchen supplies, not to mention excellent WiFi service. I can't recommend this property enough. Our entire family loves it, and I'm sure we will be back many more times in the future.

There are a million things to do in the Shenandoah Valley area!! Luray Caverns (10 minutes from the home) and Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive (15 minutes) are 'must do' items. The Park offers gorgeous drives, overlooks, hiking, biking, and ranger-led activities.

Luray (10 minutes) offers the Hawksbill Greenway (fantastic walking/biking along a rushing creek), plenty of shopping and dining, mini golf, 18 hole golf courses, zip lines, horseback riding, and more. Lake Arrowhead (10 minutes) offers fishing, boating, BBQ facilities, and swimming/relaxing at the beach area. Hawksbill Recreation Area (5 minutes) offers an outdoor pool and BBQ area. Spectacular canoeing/kayaking/tubing along the Shenandoah River (up to Class 2 Rapids) is available on your own or through several area Outfitters. Wineries (closest is 2 miles away from the cabin), antique shopping, shooting ranges, jet skiing, off-roading, outdoor concerts and festivals, and even a zoo are all within half an hour or less. Want to drive a little further? Presidential homes, Civil War sites, and Harrisonburg and Charlottesville are all 30-60 minutes away. Of course, if all you want is to stay at the cabin and relax with good food, a good book, and beautiful scenery, downtown Stanley (2 miles) offers a grocery store and a couple great restaurants.

The Visitor's Center in Luray is an excellent source of additional area information.
