Less than impressive

  • 2 of 5

Not an ideal location for families with young children. The lake was dirty (kids couldn't even swim in it), the backyard is very uneven (ended up with a sprained ankle) and the deck is quite small so we couldn't enjoy meals outdoors. The home itself is okay, at best. It could definitely use a deep cleaning and is in need of major updating. Also, just an fyi....the owners will require your personal home owner's insurance policy information in order to book their cottage. We have rented many cottages over the years and found this to be a questionable practice/request.

Owner's Response: It is always unfortunate when your vacation is not what you hoped or something happens that puts a negative spin on the entire experience (a sprained ankle). I feel compelled to address some of the commentary that was made as it is unfavourable and a little unfair at points. The rental agreement is attached and most renters read through it before booking and of course ask questions before booking if they have any. The renter's insurance and or property insurance is required on the advice of our own insurance agent. We have our own, very thorough insurance, and it's extra protection to know your renters do as well! Not intended to deter people but rather make sure everyone is covered. But again, not something we are hiding as our rental agreement is posted with the listing! The lake is not dirty or polluted-no one would be allowed to swim in it if that were the case! It is soft bottom which we tell all renters and that means it is not a sandy beach and can be weedy. Some families with small children have absolutely no problem with this and other families prefer the beach! We are very honest and upfront about these facts. Unfortunately the uneven backyard is very difficult for us to control as the home is lakeside so depending on how much water from the lake pools over the winter will depend on the effects and level of the backyard! This is actually the first time that anyone has commented on the slope of the yard as it is quite flat (as seen in the photos). So a negative there can be some slight uneven areas but on the positive side is of course that the home is lakeside! In terms of updates any recommendations this group had we followed through with after they left the property (a door handle that wasn't working properly and some sun flower seeds that were left by the fire pit outside). Sorry to hear this group had a less than pleasant experience! Our wish of course is that everyone has a lovely time but unfortunately sometimes you can't please everyone, despite your greatest efforts! I hope this addresses any questions future renters might have! Please do not hesitate to contact me personally with questions!

The cottage was very nice. very clean and well kept. The only issue I have is the grandchildren had no place to swim around there. I am still waiting to receive my deposit back however. We did leave it clean and most of the towels and bedding washed for the next people.

Great queit getaway from the city

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is located about 2 hours away from Toronto and it is close to stores if you need to buy groceries or drinks. There is a Walmart and LCBO within a 10 minute drive in Hanover. The location is very quiet and beautiful, with only a few cottages on the lake. You cannot swim right in front of the house, but you can walk farther out (the water is shallow) to swim. We brought a boat and there were some fish in the lake for recreational catch and release fishing.

Unlike other cottages we have rented before, the house was very well stocked with everything you need. Paper towels, toilet paper, an abundance of towels, pantry items, spices, etc. It was also well equipped with a large kitchen with many appliances and a BBQ with a gas hookup so you do not have to worry about getting propane. We really enjoyed our stay and we are planning to return next year. Thank you to the owners!
